Anyone have any experience working at NPS they can share / confirm? From my experience it seems like the "boots on the ground" folks are there for the love of it, and as you go higher it's hit or miss.

New Hampshire resident and hiker here. We do have rescue fees for those who are deemed "ill-prepared". It's well respected and received in the hiking community. You CAN purchase a $25 Hike Safe Card which is valid for 1 full year which essentially waives any rescue fees. Most of the hikers that get charged for rescue are out of staters on vacations.
@DPM-dp9on7 ай бұрын
NH encourages you to buy a Hike Safe card, which helps support SAR costs. It’s a great program. You will only be charged if you were unprepared for your activity or acted in a negligent manner.

I live up in Alaska and recently had a very scary moose encounter I've had them before but this one Wow I'm lucky to be sitting here typing this. She came at me four times and if I hadn't had a fragile broken down gate in between me and her I would be dead right now as for grizzlies yes you have to be so careful to the point of sometimes it's not particularly fun to go hiking but I just do it anyway because I love the exercise but I'm so vigilant that it's takes away some of the sweetness

Try the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska. 167 miles from Norfolk to Valentine. Pretty flat, across open, exposed prairie. Crushed gravel. Recommend early fall as the summers can get really hot and there is little shade. A Rails-to-Trails project. Neatly broken up into approximately 12-mile segments on average. Most towns along the way offer cheap or free camping in their city parks. It's also used as a bike trail, but the crushed gravel and goat burrs make that something of a challenge.

Yes, Nebraska has some hiking parks. Recently retired and plan on hiking the state parks this year. ( which is why I'm subscribed to this channel, looking for tips and ideas ) Hiked Ponca State Park last month and Indian Cave State park 2 weeks ago. Going to the panhandle to Wildcat Hills and Toadstool State Park soon.

A lot of politicians could gain support by promoting strong public lands support, but that interferes with big business. The Landscape by The Center for Western Priorities is a podcast that follows the state of public lands. REALLY hate the movement towards privatizing our public lands, and it will just get worse, so appreciate you speaking out on this.

I know that bike shops got hammered in the post-Covid bike bust. By the time all the bikes arrived, everyone had bought a bike. So a big inventory write-down would make some sense for REI.

I got poison oak/ivy a couple times as a kid, but since then I’ve never had it. I’m usually pretty careless when bushwhacking and I almost always hike in shorts. I think my exposure as a kid made me immune to it.

Same here, I used to get it horribly as a kid but have been fairly immune until last week. Was exploring a trail that was on a map but no longer on earth, went through some heavy stuff and got it again. But after surviving as a kid, this is nothing.

As a hiker/snowshoer who is frequently solo in the backcountry, I was thinking about getting a Recco reflector. Do you have to have it on the outside of your pack? Or, can you pack it inside of your pack? In other words, can it reflect through materials/items? Thanks.

I think it will go through material but I just have mine attached to my backpack handle on top.

15:10. REI closed three stores in my area and stopped the free shipping under $50. Their brick and mortar footprint/fixed cost expense base is way too large in this current online sales environment to compete against Amazon, moosejaw, backcountry etc. Nothing to do with the tax valuation charge or anything else. They general do not even pay income taxes except on undistributed income which is a leg up on their competition too. I love REI and been a member for over 30 years but they will probably go out of business if they do not shut down their huge money losing stores. I tried for over a decade to get on their board (I’m an ex Wall Street finance guy) and they only wanted people that would say what they wanted to hear. Didn’t want new one on the board to rock their “now” sinking boat.

I worked for many years for the National Park Service and National Forest system. Yes, we did it for the love of it. Poorly paid. Unfortunately the parks/forests appropriate tax dollars for what they consider higher priorities than trail and trailhead maintenance. Wildfire management is sucking up major budget appropriations also.

So question, with Apple updating their messaging software in iOS 18, to what android has been using does this mean that we may finally be able to read texts and have quick reply on our garmin watches now?
@richardgeorge31157 ай бұрын
Two things about REI that seem in conflict with each other. 1) they no longer have shopping bags when you check out. You have to bring your own. 2) rumors are that there is a lot of shoplifting. Seems like bringing in your own bag would make shoplifting easier. Separately, each family member has to be present for claiming dividends. Apparently there were several instances of ex-spouses claiming their former spouse’s dividends. Crazy.

As much as we dig gear, we dread walking into an REI. The repeated pressure to buy a membership is freakin annoying. Stating clearly and simply that you don't want one incites them into lecturing why you don't know your own mind and you DO want one.

Out of genuine curiosity, I'd love to hear what your reasons for not wanting to sign up for a membership are? If you don't mind me asking. Between memberships and credit cards, shopping at various retail stores can be rather annoying whether it actually makes financial sense to sign up or not. I wouldn't be surprised if some people didn't want a membership because they are constantly being asked to sign up, and I wouldn't blame them either.
@santiagohills39977 ай бұрын
@@LP-jn4twwhat is your reason for not buying the membership? It’s a pretty straightforward arithmetic exercise to determine the value.

REI's politics for sure affect patrons' buying habits (as well as employee morale). Both Rs and Ds buy gear. REI would be wise to be politically neutral and for its officers/members to use other vehicles for their desired political involvement.
@DPM-dp9on7 ай бұрын
Exactly right. No reason to involve politics in business. I have stopped buying from REI because I don’t like being lectured and have others views forced on me. REI is bleeding money and will be out of business within 3 years.

Private companies have the right to stand for whatever they want and I have the right to give my business to whatever companies I want. I have no problem with that. I was a huge fan of REI at one point, but no longer. I don’t like their business model and don’t agree with their misguided and shortsighted activism. To each their own.
