Come along for 4 days of hiking, backpacking and camping in Maine. GPS data at www.sintax77.com
For this camping trip, we'll be backpacking a loop hike of the Grafton Loop in Maine's Grafton Notch State Park.
The Grafton Loop is a roughly 39 mile, 9 summit hiking loop formed by connecting a portion of the Appalachian trail with the Grafton Loop Trail. Portions of the trail traverse both Maine's Grafton Notch State Park as well as a good deal of private land. For this reason, designated campsites are mandatory for most of the loop's route, along with a restriction on campfires. For those of you who like to stealth camp, you'll have to do a bit more planning for this trip. It took several years to come to an agreement with all of the land owners the that trail traverses, so it's best to stick to the script and keep them happy so we can continue to enjoy this route.
The four of us chose to do the loop clockwise over the course of 4 days. Many people choose to do it in 3 days, and a rarer few do it in 2. Don't be deceived by the rolling beauty of the photos you see though - the Grafton Loop is still in the White Mountains region and has it's fair share of strenuous elevation and steep inclines, littered with roots and rocks. If rain is expected, be prepared to move carefully on the many sections of solid and potentially slick rock faces on the balder summits. We stacked up nearly 13,000 feet of elevation gain over the course of our trip. Not too shabby. For comparison, that's almost 3,000 more feet than the Pemi Loop. Be aware of your group's capability, as well as desired amount of relaxing versus mileage, and plan your number of days accordingly.
Summits: Bald Mountain, Puzzle Mountain, Long Mountain, Lightning Ledge, Old Speck, West Balpate, East Baldpate, Miles Notch, Sunday River Whitecap
Parking: 985 Maine 26, Newry, ME 04261
Near intersection of Rt 26 and Eddy Rd
Hike approximately one half mile south from parking lot to the Grafton Loop Trailhead located at 44.530831,-70.825252. Note: Parking is not allowed here at this trailhead, hence the road hike.

You starting off point was a mile from where I grew up as a kid. The loop trail did not exists when I lived there but I certainly hiked Old Speck and Table Rock plenty of times. The last time I was on Old Speck the tower wasn't safe to climb, looks like they fixed that. I have been wanting to do the loop trail for a while and after seeing your video it is going to the top of my list for 2015. I hope you guys found a good place to get lobster!

Such a beautiful area for hiking. My wife and I used to head up from Massachusetts to NH (canon mountain area) for hiking and camping, I love it up there in the mountains. Two babies put it on hold for a few years, can't wait to get back up there and do some camping. Thanks for sharing and taking us along. Be well & stay safe.

Likewise. I resisted trekking poles for a long time. Now I take them even on day hikes. I don't find they help my knees as much as I like the stability on rocky or rooty terrin, crossing brooks etc. I think they've saved my ankles a time or two.

Great videos man enjoyable and very helpful. Im 36 and I've done a lot of days hikes over the last 5/10 years now, crushed out some serious day hikes out in the Whites including a Presidential Traverse day hike. Anyway. I did my first real backpacking trip last month, did the whole Pemi Loop. Though it kick my butt ( mostly do to pack weight ) it was well worth it! I was thinking my next backpacking trip would be this Grafton Loop hike, looks pretty sweet. So my question is in comparison in difficulty to the Pemi Loop if you could elaborate on that a little bit for me? Thank you I appreciate your time.

Any feedback on the Q-Core SL sleeping pad? We are thinking about changing sleeping pads and that one looks pretty nice for weighing only about 1 pound. The ones we are carrying weigh over 2 pounds so we definitely need to change. Also, was it noisy? I have read several reviews that say the noise can be a deal breaker.
@sintax77
@sintax77 9 жыл бұрын
Patrick McCormick My wife loved the Q-core. I don't think she's ever going back to anything thinner, haha. Not sure if we were just lucky, but we never noticed any noise issues. We did go with the wide version though, as a good deal of reviews complained that the regular version was actually a bit too narrow. The wide long was super spacious though, for only a couple more ounces. Oh, and we did get the Big Agnes "Pump House" to go with it, which seems a little weird at first, but it's basically a stuff sack that doubles a pump, to avoid blowing it up by mouth and passing out, haha.

It's the only trip I've done where I ended up going home instead of setting up camp. Have you been threre? I bet I walked right by the shelter I was looking for, haha.

Hey that Walmart special Ozark bag, how's the fill? I almost bit the bullet and bought two of those 30 degree bags just because they were under 2 lbs, for my kids but I read up thr down fill isn't consistent and it's not stitched enough, so the fill tends to settle at the bottom. I read up people will add more fill and stitch the tubes more often to help even out the fill. Just wondering what your experience has been. I ended up instead buying my kids some Koppen 40 degree bags from Dicks. Somewhat selfish on my part because now I can use theirs if I know I won't hit low temps on my own trips. My 30 degree Marmot bag is over 3 lbs, a beast I don't want to carry all the time.

Mine is pretty even, bit there's a little more than seems necessary in the hood actually. Still works fine though. I've heard of inconsistencies as well - may be best to unpack them at the store and take the best of the litter. very happy with mine for the price though.

John Winchell I don't think I had started yet during production of this video, but I've actually started including the burger spot info, address, etc on my accompanying blog posts for each trip :)

Do you recall if you got cell phone service along the Grafton Notch Loop? I’m heading there this summer and want to know if I should bring a personal locator beacon or if I can just rely on my cell phone. Thanks!

Things may have changed since we were there, but I don't believe we had service.

My wife has the same backpack as your wife does. She is curious how much Sara's pack typically weighs when you guys go out together?
@sintax77
@sintax77 9 жыл бұрын
Patrick McCormick After this trip, she really decided to focus on reducing some pack weight, but she typically runs a base weight in the mid-twenties with a total weight around the low-to-mid 30's. I think she has some opportunities to shave lbs in the extra clothing & toiletries categories, so we'll have to take a closer look during the next trip. In flat area like Dolly Sods, she was fine with the same load-out, but in the White Mountains those extra pounds really had an impact. It's a tough balance though - part of what drives her to get through the day is looking forward to a fun a comfortable night at camp.

Thanks for the info! My wife is usually around 30-32 lbs but she really wants to try to lighten her pack as the weight seems to hinder her comfortability. She commented when we were watching your videos that Sara never shows any signs of strain from the pack so I told her I would find out what she was carrying weight wise.. I think my wife can also shed some weight by carrying less clothes. I keep telling her no one on the trail cares if she wears the same clothes for multiple days. I carry the tent and most of the food to try to lighten her load. I just have to get her pack more comfortable for her so that I can get her back on the trail with me. We love your videos...thanks for sharing!

Hey Sintax, im at 35:15 and just seen were ya used the Mio Energy, dont know how well you look at those drink additives, but MOST of the Mio's and all the walmart brands of that stuff have propoline glycal withinthe first 5 ingrediants. Thats the same stuff thats in anti-freeze, just thought id share that with yall. OTH the Mio Orange is one of the few MIO flavers that does NOT have the Propolyne glycal in it.

Although propylene glycol is closely related to ethylene glycol (a key ingredient in antifreeze) it is chemically different. Sorta like H2O (water) is closely related to HO (Hydrogen Peroxide) yet quite different. No worries...maybe...sorta...kinda...
