On a cloudy, stormy day, I made my way up the grassy and chalky slopes of White Butte in North Dakota. It's located on private property in the southwest corner of the state, quite off the beaten path for anyone other than highpoint-seekers, ranchers, and truckers.
"Highpointing" is going to the highest point of a given area. Highpointing the 50 U.S. states is something I was introduced to several years ago, and it's been a fun way to experience remote corners of America. This highpoint marks my 31st of the 50 states.
Maybe it's my Gulf Coast upbringing, I get nervous and excited by storms, so this stormy day made the experience that much more fun.
Enjoy White Butte, and perhaps you'll find yourself up there if you're also driving to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota from the Black Hills of South Dakota!
