DD, I am a Durston tent user, but I swapped out for Easton Aluminum peg-style stakes. I use four 6" on the corners, and two 8" either for the vestibules or for the guy lines in heavy wind. These are far and away the best tent stakes I've used (including the MSR groundhogs, as good as they are.) (Great video, Elli!)

I just completed 33 days hiking with the Durston X-Mid, and like you I really began to love this tent. Easy to pitch and very reliable, dries well and with the double vestibule is very roomy. While all tents have pros and cons, the X-Mid is just the best all-rounder I have found. Backpacks are a different story though being so personal. I have an Atom+50 and if you go with this pack I doubt you will be disappointed.

Yes, that's exactly what I think of the x-mid too. It really is great for a lot of different situations. I've heard so many great things of the Atom packs but they take quite a bit of lead time (and I was a bit too late if I would have wanted it for the start of our hikes in March) which is why I went with the Durston Kakwa in the meantime, they seem to be quite similar :) But have not tried it yet....

Hey Elli, thank you so much for your review! I am thinking about buying the Durston xMid Solid and your review was a great help since I, like you, have only owned lower pitched tunnel tents so far. I am working for Globetrotter and am specialized in rain jackets: The Helium 2 jacket is a 2.5 layer jacket (fast&light) suited for carrying only up to 5kg in your backpack. The 2.5 layer construction is not made for higher pressure that comes with carrying more weight or stronger, alpine winds, it can lead to membrane destruction. Hence I would suggest a 3 layer construction jacket (can carry up to/more than 12kg depending) - and for an allround and comfortable experience a minimum of 20.000 mm water column (Gore Tex has 28.000). Regularly washing your jacket and afterwards renewing the DWR (use a spray bottle and a clean sponge, lay out the rain jacket on a flat surface, spray and rub it in with the sponge, let it dry, turn, do the other side) is going to prolong its life.

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you so much for the advice on the rain jacket 😊 that is very helpful: Yes, I've realised in the meantime that having 3 layers is definitely better for backpacking and my new jacket has 3 layers. So far, I've used the Nikwax Wash-in stuff - should I use something different (asking because I didn't use a sponge but it just needs to be added into the washing machine)? How often is regularly? I always thought that it would be a last resort renewing the DWR but it sounds different in your advice?! Thank you so much 🤗

2600 km, crazy cool! I've had my first backpacking backpack (and first trip) this year and went for Deuter backpack - they have regulating backs which is amazing! I actually hiked the first day with back set as too long and had so much better time after adjusting it the right way for the rest of the trip. Had no options of trying it on beforehand as I was ordering online, so back length regulation was godsend.

Hi Ellie! Enjoyed the post-hike gear debriefing. I’ve had issues with those silicone bowls tearing at the expansion seams as well. Frustrating to say the least. I was interested in your experience using the Alpha Direct hoodie. It seems to be the new hot trend, but the common complaint has been durability issues and snagging, and for as expensive as those garments are, I didnt want to get sucked in by the marketing hype and end up disappointed. Glad you had a good experience, maybe I’ll reconsider. Good to rainwear is tough to find, and its often difficult to figure out if the moisture is coming from the outside or inside. I have the OR Foray II and so far have been happy with it, though I havent had it out in all day driving rains yet. Hope you have a good holiday and best wishes for a happy healthy 2024!😊

Hallo Elli , many thank for a cracking gear review. Lots of queries answered 👍🏻 I’ve also found issues with the plastic dog bowls, but I found a fabric one with a waterproof inner that zips together when folded. It doubles up as a water and food bowl. As I have a big dog, I use a light dog pack so she can carry a few small items, such as the bowl, dog snacks, wipes and her first aid kit. Also, I’ve been trying out a lightweight solar panel that hangs on my backpack, so charges either the small power bank I have or anything else that needs a boost (head touch, camp lights, phone etc) However, it does, obviously, need the sun 🌞 which seems to have hibernated for the Winter. Your finger looks ok now! 👍🏻 Take care and I look forward to your next vlog 🙃

Thanks, Elli, that's such an informative video; after 100+ nights and days using this equipment, your comments are very authoritative. What's absent from so many gear reviews is an assessment of durability and that can only be made by continued use, as you've done. Glad you like the X-Mid - I've added the extra guy lines to mine; somewhere I saw a comment by Dan that the most important additional guy lines are to the middle of the large side panels. That seems right to me, it stops the sides flapping too much (they didn't flap a lot anyway) and also gives a bit of extra width in the vestibules. The others, low down, would be good in strong wind, I imagine. Being a fair-weather camper when possible I can't really comment but I'm glad I've attached them anyway. Might as well add all the extra guy lines you can while you are doing it! I love those towel tabs - thank you! I've never seen them until now but I'm definitely taking some next time I'm camping. Even just having some in the car would be useful too (if you've got some water with you!).

Probably should have done it during the hike already, but it's always hard to order something and then it probably arrives too late after I'm already past the town etc. But with pitching it low it was enough even without the additional guylines which I think is good to know. I have a ThermaRest NeoAir X-Therm and after many, many, many nights on it the pad started to fail internally. The air went from one chamber to another and somehow leaked out. In one desparate night in Colorado I put 6 patches on it! I loved the pad so much that I immediately went out and bought a new one. I was just going to throw the old pad away because I felt like it didn't owe me anything after so much use. But like you I called ThermaRest and they sent me a brand new pad!!!!! Great product and warranty.

Hello, I had the same kind of struggle to find a backpack that suited me well because I have a heavier baseweight, carrying my 5-years-old's stuff. I have the Mo60 since last year and couldn't recommend it more : it's incredibly comfortable even with being really lightweight. I also had troubles with my rain jacket (and those of my family). I'm considering a poncho for this year as it would also protect the gear in my backpack's outer pockets. Thank you very much for your video, I'm looking into the xmid 2 and your video was really helpful 🙏 and also thank you for introducing me to EU products (I'm from Strasbourg, France and I enjoy finding good products closer and more easy to get than the US small brands). Two questions about the Roo which I'm also considering: do you have the small or the large one ? How do you wear it with your pack, is the belt not chafing? New subscriber here ☀️☀️

The nature of elasticated fabrics is that they will break down quickly. If you want durable, go for something non elasticated for clothing.

True, but then again I think the leggins weren't well made in that case. I don't expect them to last forever, but the seams coming undone after only 4 weeks is just too soon for such an expensive brand imo....

Anyone trying to sell you light weight rain gear that breathes are selling you lies, especially if you think its going to last. Its uncomfortable to hear it, but its the truth. My selection for a rain jacket is still going to be the super heavy 600 gram polyurethane jacket with no pockets and pit-zips from Stormberg. I cut out the chest pocket. This with a light puffy halfzip fully synthetic fleece underneath with no pockets from Helly Hansen which only weighs 240 grams (and less when used for some years). I cut weight everywhere else but on my rain jacket. Then just hike bit slower in the rain so I dont sweat as much. The fleece is a key ingredient in distributing the moisture that is inevitably going to appear. Still, the climate in the areas you are going to is the main decider for the gear. You can also do the frog toggs, if you dont care about being environmentally friendly.

My jacket last year was definitely to thin for carrying a pack, even though it still held up for well over 1500km which is not too bad. I’ve been using the Patagonia Storm 10 this year and so far I’m very happy with it :)

Thank you so much! I don't have the mesh inner, so couldn't try it, but: The solid inner definitely helps with the cold and the wind. I can definitely feel a difference when I close the inner. The white fabric blocks the wind quite a bit and definitely makes it feel warmer. I usually hike in colder temperatures, so wouldn't trade it for the mesh inner tbh.....

I didn't have any issues for 2 years with it, but it just suffered from abrasion after that and wets through. But probably normal with the thinner fabric. So far I'm very pleased with the patagonia storm :)

Congratz on your hike ! About the OR Helium like you said I think it's pretty normal after 2 years and hundred miles. A leaking rain jacket means the membrane or the seam tapes are compromised. This is not something Nikwax can fix. Nikwax renews the DWR coating which goal is to prevent the fabric from wetting-out to keep it breathable (in theory). Also the industry is switching to more eco-friendly DWR coatings that are unfortunately less effective and long lasting. I think if I was expecting constant rainy / cold / humid weather I would pick a 3 layers jacket.

Interesting vid Elli, I’m finding my way with an Xmid2 solid (I’m 196cm so need the space). I have had patchy experience with pitching on uneven ground and also had pegs come out in high winds, I’ve added 4 msr cyclone pegs for backup. I just bought some dyneema cord and looking to add the guy lines to the available loops like you mention. Are you planning on just adding extended loops or doing it properly with adjusters? Good tent but needs getting used to

That's really interesting, thanks Ellie. The valves are a common failure point for sleeping mats. Did Thermarest refund the €20 and the cost of the 2nd NeoAir ? Sleeping bags/quilts are an essential luxury afaic 😊 I'm almost at the end of the road with waterproof jackets. Nothing works. A lot of manufacturers are breaking the law, claiming their jackets are waterproof. I've used Berghus Paclite (Gore-Tex) not sufficiently breathable and I don't sweat much. Paramo Analogy - not sufficiently waterproof, unless reproofed daily. Frogg Toggs - fragile, tore on first outing The pressure from rucksack straps seems to destroy the hydrostatic head, so these parts of the jacket really should have plastic bag like waterproofness

Thank you so much for the feedback and for following along :) Apparently, you only need to pay after it's been repaired, they'll send you an invoice with it. So I didn't pay anything. As for the 2nd NeoAir: I actually wanted to keep the new one too, as the model (the small 119cm torso length one) is discontinued. With the upgraded Neoair xlite NXT there's no torso length anymore. So I was quite happy to get the new one as a backup in the future :) Interesting to hear about the Paclite because that was on my list too..... Really hard to find something more durablebut with the backpack there's a lot of rubbing on the material so probably hard to avoid with any jacket....

Great video, Ellie! I am from Dallas, Texas, and I really enjoyed it! Congrats on your hike! I just ust wanted to let you know I switched from an Osprey Aura 55L pack to a Z-packs Arc Haul, with an extra lumbar pad. That saved almost 2.5 lbs of weight, or about a K. The Arc-Haul is super light, waterproof, and very adjustable and customizable, which helps fit it to your body. You can get extra pockets and loops that you might need…or not. The only thing I do not like about it is that it can be difficult to reach the water bottle pockets, but I have figured out a hack on that issue.

I'm planning to take a couple of pairs of waterproof socks - including a longer pair for river crossings. Then I can let one pair dry while wearing the other. And there are days when you don't need them at all.

I usually only take 1 pair of waterproof socks as for me, they are not the most comfortable for longer hiking. They are more bulky because of the thicker fabric and your feet can breathe less. I would recommend using two pairs of regular hiking socks instead and rotating them (drying one pair, using the other one). I don't wear my waterproof socks that often - if it's "just" wet grass in the morning or smaller boggy areas, I just wear my regular hiking socks. They will get wet/moist, but they dry out very quickly....

Elli, try an umbrella (birdypol) and WR treated wind shirt and rain skirt. I have had a number of rain jackets over the years none of them really worked unless they're huge, baggy and well ventilated - even then they tended to wet through. So long as you have good insulation layers (wool) to keep warm, you really need to be able to evaporate condensation. I bought a Zpacks rain skirt (cuben fibre). I wear it scrunched up around my waist and pull it down to my knees when it starts raining. That way my body heat and ventilation dry out my bottom half whenever the rain stops and I can hitch it up again. You might try making one out of a rubbish bag - see how you get on with it.

Als neue Regenjacke könnte ich die Aenergy von Mammut empfehlen. Sie ist zwar für Trailrunning aber hat 20'000 mm und wiegt 155g🥰 und als Faltnapf verwenden wir jetzt schon seit vier Jahren den Dogs creek Reisenapf. Ist ein Doppelset aber mit einem Klettverschluss kann man sie einzeln mitnehmen. Die sind auch noch trotz vier Jahren in Gebrauch in Top Zustand🥰

I have a similar hip issue with my Exos 58 - it feels great when I first put it on but quickly the hip belt causes a lot of pain that makes walking very uncomfortable. Did you decide on the Kakwa or the Mo yet? I think you can customise Atompacks.

Applying a soap on the sleeping pad can help locate a leak hole. You will be able to see a small bubble on a hole easily.

Hi Elli, I stumbled across this nice video while searching "Durston xmid1 solid". I've just got home from a 3-weekds bikepacking trip in Iceland, where I used the same Nordisk tent you mentioned. I've never felt unsafe in heavy winds or got rain on me in the night but packing a wet nylon tent every morning and not being able to sit up, if not in the very center, wasn't the most pleasant camping experience. Another wonderful video Ms Elli. I fully agree with you on the longer stakes/pegs for tents. Most of my lifetime of camping has been more of destination camping. Learned early on that they do indeed make a big difference. I want to thank you on the tip concerning your power bank charger, that had never dawned on me about the higher wattage = faster charge😳 Will be checking my 20k’s specs to see how much they will handle. The in reach mini is the way to go I think for sure Like you said, knowing you can get a signal in those extremely isolated stretches gives a lot of comfort too. The Xmids certainly need very good stakes on the four corners.I has exactly the same prob with my DCF X mid on a windy night with a peg coming out , so I use Light Wave 10 inch whci are good for sandy/peaty soils and can take a good hammering in .

Hi Elli & Otto. Fantastic and informative video and as always done very professionally. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Otto ❤. He looked so relaxed until you got his bowl out 😂. I do wish now that I had bought a similar sleeping bag to yours, as I was not so happy with the one I purchased and especially because it tapered in. I ended up leaving it in the UK. Live and learn. Your tent looked really good too, but I really also liked the one that you used last year. It all comes down to the weight. It really was a pleasure meeting you and Otto in Padstow UK last year and thank you for the mention in one of your videos. I had a very similar low streamlined super light tent to Elli , The Terra Nova Laser Pulse 1..supposed to be worlds lightest 2 skin at 500 grms very expensive too ... Its absolutely horrible compared to the Durston X mid . It s got next to no room in it at all and very claustophopic .Main bad point is the biblical ammount of condensation it gets which easily doubles the weight of the thing to over a kilo and if you can t find a very sunny day to dry it out you have heavy soaking wet tent. Its made out of SILNYLON which sucks up moisture like a sponge which the Durston SilPoly does not doo .These small low tents are very tight for interior space whichever one you get

Keine Ahnung ob du andere Möglichkeiten hast den zu testen, aber solltest du mal hier in der Nähe des Harzes vorbeilaufen, kann ich dir den gerne testweise geben.

Hi Elli , we both have similar gear . I have used the ULA Ohm 2 a few years now .Last year on the Cleveland Way for 6 days I did it without the hip belt . Its very easy to remove It made no differnce except I was lighter ( I think its 150 gr ) .Its easy to do and if you re carrying less than 10 kgs you don t really need a hip belt . I have bought an Atom Packs 40 litre for my next trip ( 400 grms or so ) but I think I will have to get a less bulky sleeping bag ( I have the Rab Mythic 400 which is good up to minus 10 c weigt 670 gr )so I will try your recommendation and use a quilt . I will check out that brand you have . I have same sleeping pad but I don t really like it so next trip I m going closed cell foam . We both have the Durston X mid . I intially bought the same one as you from USA but loved it that much I sold it on unused ( very small loss ) and bought the DCF version which is really good and use the Durstan Z flik poles as I have never carried trekking poles .The z fliks are lighter than any trekking poles at around 900 gr a pair . . Longer pegs are essential on the X mid on the four corners I think so I use Light Wave 10 inch which can hold well in softer peaty type moorland . The footprint is a little large but if you watch KZbin "Durston Skinny Pitch " there is a way to get it much narrower on both sides for an emergency pitch in a tight spot . I ve not tried it myself .plus the DCF is not a long lived tent , estimates are 400 nights before pin holes start but I only do around 20 nights a year I m happy with that My base weight is around 5 kgs plus water and food I m up to 8 or 9 kgs .I don t use any cooking gear as my walks are always not too far off shops to stock up for a couple of days . I have nt watched the full walk yet on KZbin but looking forward to that . Don t give up on that lightweight raincoat yet Elli . I have a 150 gr Rab and its never let a drop in in two years and also a similar weight Ron Hill which has been similar .. As a last resort just watch KZbin in how to water proof using Silicon Sealant mixed with low odour thinners which I have tried with old waterproofs which start to leak ( the reproof wash in stuff never did anything at all ) but painting on a thin mix of silicone sealant and low odour thinners reproofs anything .. water beads off really good ..Thanks Stuart

Thank you so much for taking the time sharing your experience and your suggestions! The "problem" for me is (when it comes to pack weight), that I'm mostly out for several days at a time at least with limited options to resupply Otto's dog food. So I rarely get under 10kgs with food for Otto (and also my electronics to film/edit) and with that weight, the ULA Ohm 2.0 was not comfortable for me anymore. Maybe I should have gone for the other size and that would have been better as I was inbetween sizes.... Re the skinny pitch: Same for me, watched the video during the hike, but never tried it as I never had a problem with the footprint. Will definitely try to rewaterproof my Helium jacket first but I'm not very optimistic tbh as the material on the inner side peels off in a few spots.... But maybe I can still get a few hikes out of it :)

Hi, Elli, My North Face windbreaker started leaking after about 4 years also. I washed it in the Nikwax laundry solution and then retreated it with the Nikwax spray. I essentially doused it in the spray and let it dry in the sun. It seems to have worked pretty well to prevent rain from soaking through. You might give it a try and save a little money. Great video!

Well done on completing your hike. I have an Atompacks which replaces an Osprey and it was the best thing I've ever done in regards to packs. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your trek.

I ve got same pack as Elli the ULA Ohm 2 (900 gr ) but i took the hip belt off which lowered it to 750 gr which is not far off the Atom Packs higher capacity models . Certainly do not need hip belts carrying light weights under 10 kgs .I have bought Atom Pack 40 litre but not really enough capacity but when I buy a lighter quilt and strap a couple of things outside it ( closed cell foam mat ) and maybe my DCF Durston tent , I can get away with a base weight of around 4.5 kgs . I want light as possible on my walks nowadays

​@@stuartchester6899 I have a Prospector pack (sadly no longer available). Due to the rolltop it expands up to 60l but does scrunch down to 40l which is where it's most often at. I have carried up to 15kg and although heavy wasn't a problem.

Mine did nt take long to arrive , I think it was 10 days for a 40 litre basic model weighing only 425 gr , no hip belt as they are not needed at all on light packs .You can thread through a belt if you want or they sell one for £15 or so.

Cooles Video, danke. Ich bin auch oft mit meinem Hund unterwegs. Nur traue ich ihm bezüglich einem Zelt nicht. Wenn ich mit ihm auf Tour bin nehme ich immer ein Tarp. Okay, er ist auch deutlich größer als Otto. Bezüglich der Regenjacke. Ich habe noch Keine kennengelernt, die länger als 1,5-2 Jahre beim Trekking überlebt. Selbst 3 lagige mit allen möglichen Membranen. Dafür sind sie mir einfach viel zu teuer. Inzwischen besitze ich ne 20€ Schwitztüte und bin damit erschreckend zufrieden.

Lieben Dank für das Feedback :) Ja, da hast du sicher Recht mit den Regenjacken und ich bin zwischenzeitlich auch mal auf die Basic-Regenjacken von Decathlon oder Froggtoggs umgestiegen, aber das war mir etwas zu schwitzig.... Ist irgendwie schwierig, aber vermutlich ist die Reibung durch den Rucksack einfach zu stark, sodass die Jacken immer in Mitleidenschaft gezogen werden...

@@ellihikes ein Freund von mir war lange Zeit ein höheres Tier bei Mammut. Laut seiner Aussage töten schwerere Rucksäcke auf Dauer jede Membran. Bezüglich Reibung hat er klar 3 Lagen empfohlen. Die sind dann aber auch wieder schwer und haben ein großes Packmaß. Ich schwitze schnell und recht stark. Da wird es auch mit guten Regenjacken zur Tropfsteinhöhle. Ich denke, Menschen die nicht besonders stark schwitzen kommen mit klassischen Regenjacken und Regenhose klar. Mein persönlicher Weg ist seit Jahren einen UL-Schirm, Regenrock und im Winter oder auf kürzeren Tracks Gamaschen. Für den absoluten Ernstfall so ne Mini-Billo-Jacke.

NEVER is a big word . I doubt that but when it does reproof just using a silicon sealand and low odour thinners mix which repoofs anything..Last resort tho so only good if the jacket gives up as they all do eventually .Its on KZbin how to reproof using silicone sealant.Having said that I will have a look at the Shake Dry jackets as I do like Berghaus Paclight over trousers for winter rain daily walks.They are too heavy for my multi day camps tho as I want light as poss for those

Great video, I too love the X-Mid. I bought some Sea to Summit guy lines for heavy wind, they are light and you can easily move them the the guy points most needed for your pitch. I also gave up on the OR Helium 2, it seems the material isn’t very durable. I got a Montbell Versalite which performs way better and also has pit zips for a similar weight. Finally another vote for Atom Packs Mo, they will custom make back length for you which given the epic nature of your walks might be a worthwhile investment!
