Great video. I get out a lot on wild camps with my dog, 2 days max. I'm looking to do some longer thru hikes at some point. How do you manage with the dog food? Do you buy kibble on route or take what you need from the start?
@ellihikes29 минут бұрын
@@mananddog.outdoors I try not to change Otto's food too much, he's very food sensitive because he's a rescue. So I don't buy a lot on the way, I rarely find his regular food somewhere. I mainly send myself resupply parcels with his food to campsites etc on the trail before setting off. And I usually carry around 7-10daxs worth of food for him which is ok because he's rather small and doesn't eat that much :)

Ha, had to smile Elli when you making your mulled wine, Otto on the thermorest matt, you sat in the snow lol! Mulled wine reminds me of the Alps so much, yum. In the UK a poor substiutue but great at the same time is strong english breakfast tea with a shot or two of navy rum. All the best wishing you a great christmas with your partner and otto. Edit this popped up on my home page, just realised it was last winter lol! Oh well same goes.

Glad to know you like the Patagonia Storm 10. After lots of research I bought one last year but haven't had the chance to try it in the rain! Also just bought the Dursten Xdome 1+ for my son for Christmas. Secretly hoping he lets me borrow it.

7:19 Hi. What height do you generally set your poles at? I used to have the BD FLZ carbon fibre poles 120-140cm, but just replaced them with aluminium, but I didn’t realise the aluminium version is actually 125-140cm, so I’m worried they are too tall.

Hey Elli, hey Otto. As an outdoor lover, dog lover, wildcamper and fellow crisp lover I really enjoy your little films and adventures. Always interesting to see the gear you use too. My favourite new purchase this year has been a pair of OMM Core Mitts (Prmaloft Active) to keep my hands warm when sleeping, I never keep my hands in my sleeping bag and they get chilly overnight. I used to wear merino fingerless gloves but these are way better and only weigh 30grams. Not bad for £25. Toasty fingers means happy chappy. 🙂

Have enjoyed watching the videos this year especially the c2c and Cumbria way. One question about footwear as you do big distances. Typically how long should a pair last( distance wise). I did a weeks hiking in la gomera in October (very good) but the outer sole of my Asolo boots started disbonding on day 2. Had to do the rest in my approach shoes which was ok. Had done about 600 miles in them. Also how good is the garmin solar watch? (Especially in uk weather.....).
@ellihikes4 күн бұрын
I hike in trailrunners, so they don’t last as long as most boots because of the lighter materials. It’s a bit of a trade off because I have to replace them quite often, but for me they are a lot better for my feet and more comfortable for long distances. One pair of trailrunners usually lasts me at least 1000km. Sometimes up to 1200-1400km, depending on the terrain (if there is a lot of tarmac, they wear out quicker). I usually replace them if the sole is worn out and doesn’t have a lot of grip anymore and/or if I can feel the cushion is worn out. The Garmin Instinct 2 Solar is ok for my needs (tracking my hikes), the battery lasts me 2-3 days if I record my hikes for around 8hrs each day. From what I’ve seen, the solar charging thing didn’t do much for me though. I didn’t see any real charging from it….

just catching up with your impressive adventures. I too had bruising in my hip and was convinced it was the bag- but then I found that it was what I put in the hip pockets. I had some snack bar &, penknife - as soon as I changed to storing gloves a buff etc and not anything hard the pain stopped. At 68 I am still learning

Congrats again Elli for your nomination. So funny story i was super skeptical of carrying a pumps for thermorests, given used the stuff sack for years and thought like just something to go wrong, and pointless lol. I wont leave home without my flextail now lol, i got a different one with a light in it and small powerbank for emergency i guess, but yea godsend, just means can get sorted so much quicker when knackered. Safe travel's on your next trip - and the only thing i've added this year, was becuase of you randomly enough - forward sending resup parcels to myself, absolute game changer. Safe travel's on your next hike and yea insultated pants are a must in winter when remote, one other thing i would add esp for UK/Northern europe, a Poncho, super versatile, super useful, doubles up as a tarp. Fits on beltkit. Easy than messing around with goretex jacket for showery downpours, instant shelter with a walking pole also for sun or rain or wind.
@ellihikes7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing :) Hahaha, I was the same - I didn't think I would like the pump as much as I did :) I've used ponchos in the past as well, but with Otto and his lead sometimes attached to my hipbelt, it started to annoy me because it was just a lot of fiddling around, having the lead over/under, stuck,..... When I'm on my own, I sometimes carry a poncho though and really like it :)

I don't think there's ever been an instance in human history where someone has learned about someone else's vegan diet from someone other than the vegan themselves. They curiously never just do it in secret do they
@ellihikes7 күн бұрын
Yep, you're right. It's totally absurd that I mention my eating habits/diet in passing in a video where I'm actually talking about a supplement 😂 There are literally thousands of videos of people cooking steaks on a campfire but me talking about protein is too much 😅 Yeah, right - hope you're telling them to eat their steaks in secret too, because we all know eating habits and nutrition should stay private 😉

Glad to hear the Durston pack was a success and I'm excited to hear how you get on with the new tent! I have one of the early Flextail pumps and it is a big help in blowing up my pad. I like it so much I've just bought one of their sleeping pads too because I am planning on doing the WHW over the winter and needed a higher R-rating pad. I've also replaced my venerable BRS3000 stove with a Camping Moon copy of the Soto Windmaster. By saving on the windshield needed for the BRS it weighs about the same overall but is more controllable in winter(WHW again!)
@ellihikes7 күн бұрын

Voted for you also! Happy for you and new tent im sure you will love it even better with your dog as the space inside is bigger then X-mid. I like your gear and pants so hmmm maybe I will get those later on but will have then sent to Poland so I can pick them up duty free when visiting family, not like here in stupid Uk with tax for everything haha I like your gear but im also considering extra poncho or umbrella to try when very wet and rainy in autumn etc. Atb

How did you find trying to find a pitch for the X-mid on the West Highland Way? I’m hoping to do it next year and to do a little wild camping if I can, and am dithering between the X-mid 1P or holding out for an X-Dome. Congratulations on your nomination. Certainly well-deserved. Good luck!
@ianpadley33347 күн бұрын
Hi Muskadobbit, I hiked the WHW this spring with an XMid1P and it’s just fine. It’s actually one of the easiest trails to find a camp spot, whether official sites, the camping management zone sites or wild sites. Plus popular spots by Bridge of Orchy, Inveroran and Kinghouse. Some smashing wild sites on Rannoch moor too. All quite roomy enough. The XMid is a really nice shelter for this kind of hike. I’d recommend taking good aluminium trekking poles over carbon through, I have before now slipped and busted a carbon pole, not great if it’s holding your tent up😃
