Thank you so much. It could be worse but the weather cleared up at the top ! It's an epic hike in Oahu.

The way you share your knowledge about the trail. I've done this same route. Was very challenging. I was really sore the next day!
@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Жыл бұрын
You are right that its trail can be very challenging. It is about 11 miles with 3700 ft elev gain/loss. It's certainly rated "Very Hard" or "Strenuous".

If I ever return to Oahu, hiking this trail is definitely one of the amazing experiences I'd like to have. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It's little easier during the dry season in Aug-Sept.

I wonder if the removal of the stairs has begun.
@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Жыл бұрын
Sorry for my late entry here. I was gone trekking for 16 days in Nepal. I will post some videos soon. Well, the stairs have not been removed yet. Back in 2021, the Honolulu City Council voted to remove the stairs and appropriated close to $1M of $2.5 (Contract to remove) in fiscal year 2023. Next year, maybe in 2024 it will appropriate $1.6M, and start to remove.

The title of this video is a bit misleading since you actually hiked the trail from Moanalua. Technically, you hiked part of the "Haiku Stairs" trail from the Omega station at the end of the trail down to the block house that was used to haul up the materials for the antenna and then back to the antenna., You didn't hike the full trail from Haiku on up to the antenna and back down to Haiku as I presumed from the title. I know, I'm being somewhat nitpicky, but, clearly, the title ought to reflect the hike you did, which is deserving of great respect as well. That is not a hike for an inexperienced hiker and appears to be quite difficult. Nice video footage. Well done! I don't know what the condition of the remainder of the actual trail is like nowadays, but when I did it back in 1981 it was in pretty decent shape. That was when the Coast Guard was in control of the stairs and you had to stop in at their offices to sign a waiver before accessing the trail. In spite of two weeks of agony after the fact (my quads were in serious pain after that climb and descent), I will never regret having hiked it back then. Views were spectacular on both sides of the Ko'olaus and the Windward side views were as yet unspoiled by the H-3. 🤙

It's illegal to hike from the North Side. If get caught, its fine is over $2k. You are right that we hiked from the South side. And we probably hiked down and up about 1/2 way. Per the City and County, Its stairs will be removed soon.

why is it illegal to used the steps to the top when I lived there I wish I knew I could have climbed up to the top I wondered what is would be like to see the Island from there

To start with several hikers require rescue every year. Not to mention Native Hawaiians are tired of haole coming to their islands and doing whatever the fuck they want.

Is it legal going down the stairs even for a little bit?
@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out my video. Per the local news last week, the stairs will be removed pretty soon. As long as they are there, you can go down quite a bit as long as you don't get caught by a guard below the stairs.

It's 100% ILLEGAL to step on the stairs. Videos like this and their responses are part of the problem.

The stairs you tried to exit? Is that an alternate route in and out?
@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Жыл бұрын
There is an illegal way from the North climbing the stairs straight. If gets caught, will get over $2k fine. I've never done from the North.

How long does it take up and down to walk it?
@LivingTheDreaminHawaii Жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out my video. It was about 7.5 hrrs total.: 3.5 hrs to the radio tower (top of the stairs), 3 hrs to come down, and spent about 1 hr at the top.

It's not quite exposed but can cause serious injuries on some of those muddy and steep hills. Many people use foot tractions.

Title is misleading. Still i enjoyed your video. There were parts of your hike where the tail should of been closed and rerouted. Bucket list and retirement idea.

Aloha, thanks for checking out my video. Its trail from the South side (that we hiked) is all legit. But the Haiku stairs from the North is CLOSED. If one gets caught trying to hike from North, a hefty fine is imposed. Its stairs supposed to be removed staring 2024 !

@@LivingTheDreaminHawaii As soon as you set foot on the stairs, you broke the law. Yes its legal to hike up the way you did, it's ILLEGAL to even put one foot on the steps. Had you stopped prior to that and put a disclaimer up mentioning that fact, it would have been great, INSTEAD you are part of the problem.
