Hiking to a Secret Church at the Edge of Santorini! 🇬🇷

On our first full day in Santorini, we started our day with a brunch with a stunning Aegean Sea view, walked through some of Oia's streets, then set off on a magical hike along the side of this beautiful volcano that is the island of Santorini. 🌋
Our hike lead us around Skaros Rock and to the Church of Παναγία Θεοσκέπαστης / Panagia Theoskepasti, a marvel of architecture on the very edge of the island. ⛪
We find our way back to the town of Imerovigli again, on the hunt for dinner (naturally), and we end up ... in a cave! 😮 But you'll just have to watch to see why!
(Hint: because food.) 😛

the views form the top are stunning! The amount of stairs would be a challenge for a lot of people. The history along those paths…and I agree, who would put a church there.

Hi Doreen! Only some crazy Greeks would put a church there! We wish it wasn’t so windy so we could throw the drone up there and show what it was like from the water looking in, but it was indeed quite stunning! 🤩 💙

Realistically how long did it take you to get to the church vs. how long it took to hike coming up? What part of the world to do you normally reside? Like are you used to any sort of altitude/hiking? And what time of year did you do this? Lots of questions. Just trying to make an educated decision for my upcoming trip. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for watching and all the questions! The hike was about 30-40 minutes in each direction, though coming back was a bit quicker as we stopped to take a bunch of photos on the way there. There are no altitude concerns here as you’re just barely above sea level, and we’re moderately active at home, and tend to walk about 10K steps a day when we’re travelling. This was in May, so the weather was a nice blend of warm with some wind, but year round it would probably be just as beautiful! Don’t forget to take water with you to hydrate! And make sure you’ve got some good running shoes or something sturdy to protect your feet on all those stairs and rocks! The stunning view is well worth the hike, enjoy! 💙
