In answer to every comment re: hollyweed, it was just cloth taped to the signs. They pulled it down pretty quickly. Same day. They didn't actually change the sign, so there was nothing to "fix"

I just watched Rocketeer yesterday for the first time since it came out on laserdisk. Still good. Also the Nevil Sinclair story is the real history, 'They' just insist on the boring version to cover up the Nazi plot. ;)

Back in the early 1990s, my dad use to work as a meter tester for the Department of Water and Power. Often he got to test the one located on the Hollywood sign's letter "H." He had a key to that fence, and on two seperate occaisions for take your kids to work day my sister and I got to go with Dad to test that meter and take pictures standing right next to the Letter H. Eat your heart out if you're jealous! :) Only DWP employees and their kids have that privilege.

Next time you go there (if you ever do) you should walk on that little trail behind the plaque. Also next time start at the Griffith Observatory. That way you can see a show afterwards and rest up from the long hike!
