Without a doubt. Here's a test though: try to make a film without a sound recordist. Unless you making a silent film, can't be done. Your sound mixers equipment fails, nothing happens on set.

The fact that my film student colleagues are all well-aware of the importance of sound design in films, but still having little-to-none interest in sound design, further illustrates how underrated this department is.

There are different length mics, although you don't want to use the long shotgun microphone indoors as the video says. Long ones are used exclusively outdoors when you want to cancel out noise, like a tv reporter in front of a large audience on sports events. Indoors these mics cancel out the noise too, but also cause phasing issues because of the room reverberation and that's why they are not used indoors.

That line at the end pretty much sums up life as a sound person. The goal is to get usable sound, not the best sound. It took me a few projects to figure out what sounds to let slide, and which ones to alert the 1st AD to.

Yes, ADR/looping is needed for lots of reasons, and sometimes it's just the actor trying to exactly re-capture the sound created on set to improve quality a bit (e.g. when a mic is partially obscured in the take), but other times it's for re-framing a performance to give a different emphasis.

Sometimes. On big budget films, probably always. On indie films, only when necessary. Otherwise why record sound on the set at all?

These little mini docs are so damn good, compiled together so well, I actually wish you would make long form stuff on the same topics. give me an hour and a half of this level of superb production! I'm not even a film guy...at least so far as wanting to make one from scratch. I am appreciative and a fan of the medium and as such love how a film comes together as well, I just dont have the passion to do it myself...leave that to the pro's!

RE: Dead Cats & Blimps- In MY experience Dead Cats are applied OVER a Blimp (which vary in size depending on the mic inside - the long one pictured would generally have a shotgun mic inside), where a blimp by itself cannot provide enough wind blockage. Small mics, may be able to use a stand-alone dead cat. But, larger dead cats (as pictured) do not exist by themselves. (In my experience). On another topic, hand held mic boom operators work hard in extended scenes.

Studiobinder makes great stuff, but they always go a little deeper than I expect them to. This was pretty good overview with some very important details, like how sounds works with other departments to make sure they capture the best sound they. Sound is 50 percent of your project, if you treat it that way then it will serve you well in the end.

WE don't record sound for film anymore. :-) We record sound for DIGITAL or VIDEO or CINEMA. We no longer, for the most part, use film. But we still do. ;-) Film, filming, and filmmaking are the most misused and MIMICKED words in the industry. Even though the words, movie, and film, went hand in hand. There was a time when you couldn't have one without the other. This is no longer the case. Thank you for your time film. 🙂 Digital video and film require different skill sets. Having DIFFERENT HISTORICAL and TECHNOLOGICAL timelines spanning 150 years. Have PRIDE and appreciation of the gear we use, including the words that describe what we do. Plenty of AMAZING video engineers worked hard to develop the technology that eventually superseded film. Our tools are Digital Video, Non-linear, and CGI. We are moviemakers, not filmmakers. We do what filmmaking wished it could, and movie-making still does. Not only that, but we are creative types such as Videographers, Directors, and Cinematographers. Using the word film lacks originality, and creativity, and expresses a limited understanding of what got us here, including the tools (technology) we use. Also, since the individuals teaching this craft in the 21st century have as little knowledge as the students, so much is getting lost in translation. If a school calls itself a "film" school or defines you are filming. Find another school. If you learn to appreciate the tools of the craft. The art will follow. :-) 🙂 We video or are videoing, we do not film. Don't like it? Apply some of that creative originality instead of mimicking. 🙂 We learn from, but differentiate from, the RARE professionals who know how to use film stock (like, KODAK COLOR NEGATIVE 35millimeter 500T or Kodak VISION 70millimeter 2383) and film cameras, like the ARRIFLEX 435 or the Panavision R-200 and let's not forget Steenbeck flatbed film editors. If you know the difference and have a better understanding of the craft. You will stand out in an industry polluted with point-and-shoot "pros". I think it comes from analogue equipment days. The sound recordist would hit record , and the spinning tape machine would rev up and get up to speed, once it’s ready for a performance.. “speeding”, and off to the races . Probably just something a sound mixer said in passing that became film set culture I’d guess.

Does sound behave like light in that the closer the microphone is to the subject the greater the fall-off will be? Meaning that calibrating the microphone to far from the subject will result in background noise being picked up.

Proximity to the mic remains important, but 32-bit float (plus dual capture chips) are a great tool... don't forget wind protection as well. Pretty much act like you DON'T have 32-bit float, but use 32-bit float, and you'll do fine.

Generally, a shotgun mic is used for exterior shots. A small diaphragm condenser mic, aka pencil condenser, is used for interior shots. The difference can be profound. Also, mics are like lenses - they don't ho out of style. Buy a good mic, take care of it, and it will last for many years. Recorders undergo more techological changes, but not as much as cameras. So buy the best mic you can, recorders as well. But mics are the most important.

A query here. Any help would be appreciated. I have two characters seating far apart in a room speaking simultaneously. Two cameras will capture the two characters. The shots will be taken at the same time. A single shotgun won't be able to cover both. Will using two shotguns be problematic? Will one capture some of the other person's voice too? How to best plan this scene?

Note from an editor. I’ve often gotten “room tone” where they’ve changed the volume of the recording. FYI that is useless to us. I like to think of it as “patch tone”. Keep all levels exactly the same. Keep all the actors in the room all the same mics going. In fact I’d rather have 5 seconds of silence for each camera setup, than 1 minute of room tone at the end. Half the time actors already left. And it sounds nothing like the scene because of less humans in the room, and volume adjustments. That is worthless to us. I wish we could make the 5 seconds of silence per camera setup the new culture of “patch tone”. Your editors will thank you.
