Part 3 of the Bhutan series.
I booked a three day tour with Flying Fox Bhutan (www.flyingfoxbhutan.com)
Tucked away deep in the Himalayas, landlocked between the worlds two largest countries is the small kingdom of Bhutan. The land of Dragons. Boasting the worlds happiest people and surrounded by natural beauty this nation of less than a million people remains a mystery to most of the world. While I was in this region of the world I decided to check it out for myself. I booked a three day tour of the country with Flying Fox Tours. On day 1, we explored Thimphu, day 2 we went over the Dochula Pass to Punakha. On my third day we hiked a few hours up to Bhutans most famous historic site, Tiger Monastery. I also planned my trip around attending the nations the nations colorful cultural festival, Par Tsechu. This was the final day of tour in Bhutan, and here’s how it went…

It was recently in the news that a new daily rate of $100 per night would come into effect from September this year and last for four years. Quite a drop from $200 (US). I spent two weeks in Bhutan in Sept 2019 and loved it. In the three days you certainly packed in a lot and presented a beautiful introduction to the main tourist areas. As I was not confident that my body would do the Tiger’s Nest 4 hr return I told my guide I would see it from below. He virtually did a handstand as he didn’t have to do the climb that day. People planning on Bhutan need to be aware that the roads outside the main areas are sometimes pretty rough and you are always going around corners so it is not a place for those who get car sick. Also the food can become a bit monotonous and I wasn’t impressed with the living conditions the Indian road labourers have to put up with. You cannot travel by yourself unless you are Indian. You will have a guide and driver to show you around. However, a wonderful place to get away from the crowds and see some authentic people and culture.

Yes, you are correct. The governmemt has reduced the daily SDF ( Sustainable Development Free from $200. USD to $100.00 daily to help attract tourism, particularly since Covid. Perhaps like you, I paid the higher fee years ago for my visit and it certainly did add up. Yet, if anyone has an interest in Buddhism, stunning Buddhist architecture, and visiting its many religious sites, it’s beyond worth it. I did hike to Tigers Nest. My guide and I were the only travellers on the path…..and that alone was a blessing ;) Hope to return again at some point to witness the festivals…no Tigers Nest hike this time. Age and body has its own say in that hike now! Safe travels ;) With metta.

you made that look so easy. This journey is not for the faint of heart, I really had to pull strength from my passed on mother to get me over the hump, before the stairs to the Monastery. It's not just over there and not just 10 minutes. It was a journey to my soul and back. It is a challenge that I needed to prove that I wanted to continue to live. Yeah you did a great job on this.....Thank you!

oh brilliant...I found part 3 THANK YOU...I didn't know that the Tiger's Nest burnt down in 1998 and was rebuilt...so it actually is fairly new...and not authenically ancient any more...any news what caused the fire ?...thank you so much for a breathtaking tour to this holy site... :)

Glad you found it!! I am not entirely sure. I wonder if it was incense or something and those buildings are mostly wood. But you will have to research to find out the reason. Very beautiful either way

Thanks for visiting my country and hoped you enjoyed a lot. It would have been perfect if you would have added bhutanese music for the background rather than indian music 😂.

Any reason that you didn’t leave the audio for the performance tho? I was looking forward to hearing it! While the music is nice, that’s Indian music and I’m sure the Bhutanese audio sounded much different
@thetravelingzam
@thetravelingzam 8 ай бұрын
good question. it wasnt so much music at the festival, but just a rhythm drum and a few horns. That and along with the wind sound made it not such a great choice for a consistent background noise.

You can barely see it from the bottom. There is a cafe half way up though that is nice views but also requires quite the hike
