The fires up this way are awful...PA, NY-NJ, CT, and Metro Boston. It's scary when you can see the smoke commuting to work. Luckily, we got some rain and snow. We are not used to this.

Still have Dana Gleason’s Dana Design Terraplane in my quiver after 30+ years. Heavy, but still does the job with a full mountaineering load of 60-80 lbs. Dana probably sold out because of his age. He sold Dana Designs to K2 in about 1996. K2 cheapened the gear and drove the business into the ground.

Thank Hiking Boy :). I don't really have a problem with the return policy. If you peruse the return section of REI some of the returns look like definite abuse of the policy.

Great report, as usual. I used Gaia for years, but I kept getting logged out and customer service was unhelpful . Switched to Cal topo a few months ago and really liking it. It’s more minimal but does everything I need! Is well organized and the online tutorial is excellent. And it’s much cheaper, only $20 a year versus $100 (for the Outside+ version).

Yea, the CalTopo app is a lot better than it was. I've been using it too, guide coming in the future

So sad about MR. I have their Catalyst 26, which is an urbanized Coulee. I looked at everything for an EDC pack, and gladly paid for MR quality. I hope they will continue their amazing lifetime warranty. I was getting excited that MR was moving in the right direction for through-hiking packs with their new Radix line, and I think they could really bring some needed innovation in that space.

I have the original Dana Design but I have long since moved on from such heavy gear. I don’t carry a pack much more than 24 pounds or so, no need for a heavy duty pack anymore for me and most long distance backpackers. I am sure some people still have a use for such a heavy duty pack. As far as the White Mountains go it does get insane at times up there now. I hiked a long section of the AT just South of the Whites during peak foliage season and I only seen a few people on the trail each day. Getting to the trailhead in Vermont was pretty crazy around Woodstock Vermont. This was on a holiday weekend and all the tourist were out. I think the fires are out in Massachusetts and most of the Northeast as we have finally gotten some substantial rain and snow. We had nearly no rain this fall. Bad for forest fires and great for backpacking.

Great video! Speaking multiple languages, regarding the Macedonian video, they likely just translated “guy” to their language which probably is closest to “boy” since most languages won’t translate exactly. Don’t be offended! Your videos are so so helpful!

That's unfortunate if yeti does cut the consumer line for mystery ranch. Yet more proof that selling a brand to publicly traded corporations is an inevitable quick trip to the smoldering dumpster out back.
@LoremIpsum197023 сағат бұрын
Aren't most (or all) of the consumer items made offshore? ie Vietnam. All the milspec has to be made in US. Guess the DoD markup revenue is more than enough for them.
@kgwash20 сағат бұрын
Hmmm...Osprey? Altra? North Face? I could go on.
@wyattroncin94120 сағат бұрын
@@kgwash Altra's product quality has gone to shit, TNF sells 500 dollar dome tents for 3000 with Gucci printed on the fly, and Osprey's product designers have spent the last decade selling the exact same backpack in 4 different volumes, but every year space the load even further from your back and another new pocket. Even in the few cases where a sellout brand isn't stripped of quality or turned into an overpriced stagnant fashion label, they rarely innovate and are slow to adapt to industry developments.

I hear that some of the former developers and others from Gaia GPS are now working on a new mapping app called Goat Maps. Have you seen or used it ? Do you have any insight, information or thoughts on it ?
@HikingguyКүн бұрын
Heard that too and checking it out, stay tuned...
@SummitForWellness5 сағат бұрын
What I figured out with the logout issue or the freezing issue with Gaia is to close the app, make sure your phone in on airplane, and then reopen it. That has worked for me every time. For some reason if you have data on and have really poor service, the app doesn't work but once you fully kill the service then the app knows what to do.

You don’t need Stealth Mode, there’s some combination of buttons that does the same thing on any Garmin from what I remember.
@kandj60468 сағат бұрын
It was my message to Cris about EMF, if you would be able let me know how to disable all connections I would greatly appreciate it!
@nathancragg62027 сағат бұрын
@ you can try both airplane mode or battery saver depending on what you want to mitigate. The biggest difference that stealth mode adds over airplane mode is it doesn’t log your location data…..which if you’re not connected to a device isn’t a threat vector anyways. From an EMF standpoint, I think you’ll probably want to dig into Battery Saver and see if that does what you want

I got logged out of Gaia while on a trip. I had no password on me or cell phone coverage. Luckily, I had a small paper map, or I would have been screwed. What are they thinking.
@Hikingguy2 күн бұрын
Yea, I took the links off my gear page and site a few weeks ago. It's a shame because I still love their map style and default layers, but if you can't depend on it when you need it, what's the point?

If I remember correctly - Outside acquired both GAIA and TrailForks a few years ago. The yearly subscription for GAIA went from $39 to $59 which a huge jump. Not sure what’s going on there but I stopped my subscription and jumped to On-X (not advertising) at a lower price point - and I think On-X acquired The Hiking Project app. Crazy acquisitions all around - not sure if it’s a good thing or not.

isnt most of montana and wyoming owned by rich people? off the top of my head I heard Ted Turner use to be by far the largest land owner in montana. So they are what going to take public land sell it to super rich and say that increased their economic situation? then probably turn around and gripe about land prices
