This was wonderful! What a production! Thank you! I have Lightroom, so I'll probably do the photo version using it. My question is what are the pros and or cons of going the Photo Route or the Video Route, as one could make corrections in either. The video certainly seemed simpler. Does the photo route give better results?

Thank you! The RAW photos provide more flexibility to work with and adjust when editing. The video has a lot less flexibility and not much can be done with the video file to adjust color, contrast, etc.

I like all the pointers on making time lapse videos, thank you! I'm fairly sure Davinci Resolve will ingest DNG files and you can then color grade them as a raw video sequence. That would eliminate the need to use RawTherapee. Having lots of options is definitely a good thing though. Thank you again.
@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your feedback. I’ll have to test out importing DNG files direct into DaVinci Resolve. If a step in the process can be eliminated with the alternative being to graze them as a raw video sequence that is a great trade off. Thanks!

I’m an 85% of the time edit with Premiere Pro person so I will admit I don’t know all of the advanced capabilities of DaVinci Resolve.

@@GreatDayForAHike - Editing many hundreds or thousands of raw files and generating JPG files takes a while. I think if your sequence of DNG files are well exposed and don't have issues that require individual editing, then it's a time saver to just import the DNG files into Resolve. You can do a lot of adjusting with just the Color Wheels and a Curve adjustment. The DNG files are imported basically the same way as the JPG files in this video. Some people will be more comfortable editing images with Raw Therapee or their favorite photo editor before using Resolve, and I have even done this myself when it's practical. One final thought is that you need a decent computer to edit raw video in DaVinci Resolve. I have actually tried this out now. Hope this information ends up being useful to someone. Thanks for the great tutorial video!

Hi, great guide. One question. My Gopro11 doesnt start recording (it turn on at scheduled time but doesnt start recording) for scheduled timelapse while plugged into a charger/powerbank. You showed in video to schedule timelaps to not wake up for sunrise and connect powerbank. Is it working for you ?

Thank you. It has worked for me the few times I have done this. Are you using an Anker power bank or a different brand? I have found that the Anker power banks work consistently well for me, but some brands have been buggy at times. Alternatively, it's possible you may have discovered a bug.

Yup, tested it again just now and sure enough it does not kick off the time lapse anymore while plugged in. Probably something that got added with a firmware update. However, if you have a fully charged battery in your GoPro it can do about 1.5-2 hours on that battery for a time lapse, so try it with a fully charged battery and not plugged in and you should be good to go. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Much appreciated!

OK, I am following the video but I am having problems in Davinci Resolve. As one person mentioned before "Also within the EDITED folder, I have a duplicate file with the extension jpg.out pp3. " I am also having this problem, I've selected all photos by hand and was able to create the video but as soon as I bring it down to the edit tab it will not show any photos even though the video is playing up top. If this was not bad enough I can't seem to bring up any edit tools that appear on the right hand side of your video. Would you consider showing edits using ON1 same day?
@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. So all instance of the jpg.out pp3 file can be mass deleted as this is not needed and simply contains text of the edit you made in RawTherapee. If you search that folder for pp3 and mass select and delete all instance of that file you should then be able to do a clean import of just the jpg files. Yes, I wish DaVinci had a bit better interface. I know a lot of editors who love it but I still prefer Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing which is what I primarily use. In DaVinci I recommend to try toggling the tabs for various modes and see if you can get it to show the edit tools or other options. You may also need to minimize or maximize some features within DaVinci. I have not used ON1 before but I took a look and it looks like a great tool. For photo editing I typically use Adobe Lightroom just because I find it to be fastest and best. It does have a cost but the cost is worth it if you’ll use it often.

I'm having trouble bringing in the photos as a sequence to DaVinci resolve. When I click to add all photos from the EDITED folder the control + A buttons doesn't add all the photos. I'm only allowed to click one photo individually and since there are 3k + photos there's no way for me to manually add all one by one. Is this a glitch in the software? Also within the EDITED folder, I have a duplicate file with the extension jpg.out pp3. Why does yours doesn't show it in this tutorial?

As long as your images are sequentially numbered such as 0001.jpg, 0002.jpg, etc then try removing any initial import of photos and apply the following steps: 1. Go to the “Media” page. 2. Click on the “Media Storage” tab from the top left. 3. Now click on the 3 dots and make sure “Show Individual Frames” is Unselected. 4. Press “Ctrl + i” (or “Cmd + i”) to import. 5. Open the folder containing the image sequences. 6. Select all the images and click on “Open“. 7. The image sequences should be imported as a single clip inside Resolve.

I am having a problem that apparently is common. My hero 10 has suddenly been ignoring the scheduler. I set it to 4am for 1 hr for sunrise and nothing happens. No video at all. Only started doing this about a month ago. I have tried setting it up 20 minutes in advance to record for an hour and watching it. It switches on as schedule stays on for a few seconds and then switches off. I installed GoPro labs about 3 months ago and it worked perfectly doing Thailand sunrises but for the last 4 weeks or so nothing. A google search has shown many people have had this happen even up to hero 11. Any comments or solutions would be appreciated thanks

@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike 9 ай бұрын
Great question. So what this means is 10 hours of actual, finished product footage. If you’re capturing a time lapse for 24 hours of real time the end result time lapse will be much shorter than the 24 hours. Depending on interval your final time lapse will be around a few minutes up to 10 or so minutes in length.

Ok, this could be due to a few different reasons. You may not be filming in the high bitrate. The HEVC codec used for these video files may not play well on the devices you are viewing them on (HEVC is a tough codec for a lot of devices to handle). Your GoPro may need a reset. Note that resetting will wipe out all settings you currently have setup. There could be a hardware issue with your GoPro and you may want to reach out to GoPro support.

IF GPH11 was smart... and it is not, you would be able to do this without an external battery bank. Technically speaking there is zero reason it can't take its pictures, shutoff and then automatically turn itself back on to take the next set up pictures etc etc. Software on consumer devices is woefully underdeveloped.
@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike Жыл бұрын
It would be nice to get more battery life for time lapses, but I'm not sure the GoPro would have time to power off and back on between each photo when the interval is something like 5 seconds as daytime time lapses commonly are. With a slower shutter speed such as 20 or 30 seconds with a night lapse the GoPro of course needs to remain powered on in order to capture as much light as possible.
