You know, a long time ago, instructors used to introduce students to the dreaded "CONFOUNDING TABLE." It was a Ping-Pong-sized table which had an intricate airport diagram painted on it with many and varied taxiways. My instructor had one up in the attic over the office, and every student was aware that he would someday "face the music" in front of his peers when it was his time. Several students would climb the stairs together in order to practice hearing, copying and carrying out 'ATC' instructions from an instructor while moving their model airplanes around the table on the painted surfaces. This also helped in entering and exiting traffic patterns, as the students would "fly" planes around the room while following more instructions. They were great tools to have around. Often times there would be contests between the students as to who could make the fewest mistakes. There were prizes and everything. It was all in fun - and the students learned a great deal.

While this student pilot was overwhelmed by events, and the safe thing would have been to question her readiness. It may be hard for those who haven’t gotten their PPL to appreciate how challenging simple tasks can be when for the first time your safety net, I.e. CFI is removed from the plane. It would not be out of reason that with the CFI next to her, she performs well within standard. During her first solo she becomes overwhelmed. I am glad this turned out without any real issues and the hope is it was a learning event for her and her CFI.

Yikes. I have to say this controller really kept his composure, and I would argue that he treated her with more empathy than she deserved making one fumble after another. At a certain point, it would be understandable for him to lose his cool after so many errors because this person's inexperience can go from charming to dangerous in a matter of seconds. That said, this poor woman was not ready to solo AT ALL. Most of the blame rests with the instructor. It's one thing to enter an unfamiliar airport and need progressive instructions - I think we've all had to swallow our pride once or twice - but I'm assuming this is her home airport where she's likely done dozens (I hope) of laps? Again. Yikes. Hoping this is a learning experience for her and for others: take a minute and study your diagram - orient yourself before you get in the airplane.

Also had flights as a student where I'm literally driving to the airport and just get a feeling of "Today ain't it" or that I'm underprepared, unfocused, not confident, etc. That said, I was taught that part of being a pilot, perhaps especially a student pilot, is learning to know when it feels like you aren't going to be at your best, you need more training, or when you're behind the plane, behind comms, in over your head, etc. But all that said...barring an absolute brainfreeze of a day (which ADM should have forced into a no-go)...no clue why that CFI thought she was ready

That is not uncommon. Often pilot will just tell Ground that they are ready to taxi. It is not the best or proper way. But, it does happen. ATC will assume that they are leaving their airspace. Hence the approval for a frequency change.
@thomasdalton1508
@thomasdalton1508 6 ай бұрын
I agree. If there isn't a flight plan, the pilot needs to tell the controller what their destination is or, as in this case, that it is a local flight. If they don't, the controller needs to ask. You can't just say "frequency change approved" without knowing where they are going...
@deanfowlkes
@deanfowlkes 6 ай бұрын
@@thomasdalton1508 - I have a different opinion. ATC is only responsible and only has the bandwidth for their own jurisdiction. There are only one of four things ATC needs to know on departure. Those four things are: - Is the flight on an IFR plan; - Is the flight on VFR Flight Following; - Is the flight Closed Traffic (staying in the pattern), and their next desired approach; - In what direction will the flight depart ATC’s airspace. It’s the pilots’ responsibility to choose one of these options and inform ATC.
@thomasdalton1508
@thomasdalton1508 6 ай бұрын
@@deanfowlkes Other than the distinction between specifying your destination vs specifying the direction of departure, which isn't important here since it was a local flight, you seem to be agreeing with me. Of course it is the pilot's responsibility, but if they don't do that then the controller needs to ask.

What was incorrectly subtitled as "all fine?" is ATC saying "Callsign?" because she KEPT responding to instructions with just ".....okay." The vocal fry/valley girl voice I could excuse if she was competent on comms, but man does this pilot need more instruction before going off on her own. You can hear the nervous ground controller realizing he should over-enunciate "HOLD...SHORT..." And even then I'm sure he's thinking "What are the odds she just rolls right on out onto 36. I'll never blame a *student pilot* for not having everything 100% dialed in, comms and ATC instructions are some of the more difficult things for certain people to master, especially early on. The blame 100% goes to whatever instructor endorsed her for solo flight. "Frequency change approved." "Lol k"

I am somebody with no aviation knowledge per say but somehow enjoy watching these videos. If somebody can help answer the below it would help me and others who are new to this world. My question is does the instructor have knowledge to the interaction between their student and ATC during the student's 3 take offs and landings? It seems the instructor somehow should recieve some type of feedback from ATC in how the student performed before they rrecieve their license. Case in point is this student. Obviously she is unprepared and needs more training. But how does the instructor know how their student did in their radio communications with the controller? Thank you.

I have the nasty feeling that this was a CFI who did all the radio work for them and now they are completely overwhelmed. The student is fine in the air, but has no idea how to communicate. Having learned in a class D smack dab under a class B, my CFI made me do radio work from the very start. It took a bit longer to my solo, but this sort of scenario - or worse, like busting B - didn't happen. As ATC, I would have absolutely said "and I have a number for YOUR CFI to call".
@thekill2509
@thekill2509 6 ай бұрын
I will bet a crisp $20 that her CFI was probably tired of trying to overcome her attitude and get her to communicate properly and was pressured to solo her, so he or she said "ok, go knock yourself out" hoping that the obvious deficiencies would catch up with her quickly. I know it's a lot to judge from one video, but this student clearly has no idea whatsoever what she's doing other than she appears to be able to get in the air and back down.
