I love this show. One of the major steps towards equality for disabled people is being able to talk openly about it. And recognising that a physical disability does not stop you having a sense of humour. In striving towards true equality, being over-protective of disabled people is almost as bad as being uncaring. This show allows the able-bodied a chance to see the disabled as people, not special cases. It's like seeing the person and not the wheelchair.
@UnitSe7en2 жыл бұрын
No. No, not at all. This show is not whatever romantic delusion you have of equality. What clips like this _do_ do is highlight the total absurdity of our cuddle culture. When two friends can't have a joke.

Yeah it makes me wonder why there is/was that perception. Cause it was Alex's favourite, by the looks of it. I mean I get why there's a worry sometimes, but if you're just naming a band after someone's disability it doesn't strike me as a negative thing. Rather it normalises it by acknowledging the thing everyone is trying so hard not to acknowledge and I feel like if it were me its the sort of thing that would make me feel more comfortable and accepted, rather than self conscious and hurt. Further, I think the joke itself isn't really offensive because it's "arms gone" which is just a statement of fact. It's not offensive to say a blind person is blind, it's just what we call sightlessness. If he'd made some kind of metaphor or simile it might start to sound more insensitive with a potential to be worse depending on the connections you make, because then it would be shining a spotlight on Alex and his specific situation and making sort of a crude mockery of the fact that it's different... if that makes sense

@@Loctorak this comes under the category of fucked if you do fucked if you don’t, we’re constantly told to treat people with disabilities like everyone else and if you treat them differently just because of their disability you’re discriminating against them. so you’re either an offensive arsehole for making a joke that you’d make about someone’s looks or something that’s wrong with their body that you’d make about any other person without a disability or you’re discriminating against them by not making a joke about something you would with anybody else. It’s wrong to make a joke about somebody (in this case someone) who didn’t develop arms fully but fine to take the piss out of for example rob Beckett for his huge teeth.

'Louis Arm's Gone' was brilliant by Josh and for Alex to take it within the spirit that was intended is massive. As a Police Officer, we would rib each other mercilessly if we got the chance. A big part of the reason behind it was it took the edge off something that you had been involved in. Of course there were those that liked to dish it out, but couldn't take it themselves, but everyone got their comeuppance at some point. Then it was disallowed as it was seen to be 'bullying'. I tended to disagree. It was dark humour, that struck a chord with those that were affected by that moment and laughter became a release of tension and stress.
@extendoduck2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the point where it crosses to bullying is when it's done to someone who can't take it but also DOESN'T dish it out. I've been on all three sides of that one (the asshole giving it to someone innocent who can't take it, the observer, the target) and they all kind of suck. For clarity: I don't know your circumstances, got no idea whether stuff ever crossed from dark humor or pranks to bullying. Also I freaking love pranks and the darkest possible humor when they're done well. In this case I totally agree, it wasn't offensive. It might have been a little bit originally, but clearly Josh regretted it and also clearly Alex got a giant amount of happiness seeing how uncomfortable he could make Josh by making him say it on air. It's buddies giving each other crap.
@spracketskooch2 жыл бұрын
Surely by now everyone must realize that's what friends do, tear each other to pieces. Also, the people that I know that have lived the roughest lives have the best senses of humor. It seems like now the "elites" are trying to take away one of the most important things that normal people who experience struggle have, their humor.
@paulbradford82402 жыл бұрын
@@spracketskooch I totally agree. The minority are being pandered to. Not saying that minorities shouldn't have a voice, but that 'banter' which is what it is, joins so many people together.
@spracketskooch2 жыл бұрын
@@paulbradford8240 I'll never forget an example of banter doing exactly that. I live on a Native American reservation in the US, and when I was growing up there was a decent amount of racial tension between white people and Natives. I was hanging out with a friend, a white city guy, wore skinny jeans and aviator sunglasses, had perfectly quaffed hair, the perfect image of a city hipster. One of my Native friends called and we decided to meet up. They tell us where to meet them and we end up in a very run down trailer park, an environment my city friend is not used to at all. We get out, knock on the door of a trailer, and go inside. Inside are about 15 Native dudes, and they're all mean mugging my city friend, like they're thinking, "who the hell is this soy boy, and why is he here?" I go back outside, ostensibly to get something from my truck, but my true goal is to leave him there alone because I thought it would funny to be dropped in an unfamiliar, slightly hostile environment to fend for himself. I'm outside for literally only a minute before I think, "I'd better go back in and smooth things over, I've had my fun". So, I head back in expecting him to be in a corner alone. But as I open the door I hear the sounds of laughter. I walk in and they're all clapping each other on the back, laughing, and sharing cigarettes. They were making fun of each other, and having a great time. People from two wildly different cultures, and that's what bridged the gap immediately, "dark" humor, banter. Sorry to waffle on, but you reminded me of that, one of clearest examples I've seen of why you're exactly correct, banter joins people together.
