Brazil nuts are revealed to have a rather unusual quality. Also featuring a rare example of Fry using his "crass" voice "May contain NUTS!" Taken from QI XL series I episode 3 "Imbroglio"

The brazil nut also contain high levels of radium. The radium in Brazil nuts is a mix of Ra-226 and Ra-228, and the high concentration of radium in Brazil nuts is due to elevated levels of the uranium and/or thorium series in the soil in which the tree grows. Also it has the highest fat level than any other nut. Seriously, it's the freakiest nut ever.

the physical qualities like shape, density and mass of the brazil nut relative to the other contents of the bag is what causes them to rise to the top i would say

I SO want to see this worked into an episode of Sherlock now. -Oh, course it was an accident. She obviously went into anaphalactic shock; his clothes are covered with salt and pieces of skin from a cheap brand of mixed nuts; and he is clearly too ignorant to know that the allergic quality of Brazil Nuts can be transferred through sexual activity. I'd die laughing. :D

Holy smokes. Thanks for queuing me in! PBS had a great article talking about this, and a few others, like the nuts could stay dormant for years, fall from 200 feet high at 50mpg while weighing 5lbs. A single tree can product 250lbs of nuts a year!

Apparently my professor of Mechanical process engineering has secret knowledge nobody knows about because she explained how this happens and even used Brazil nuts in a bag with smaller ones as her example.
@9_in_the_afternoon8 жыл бұрын
Brilliant, do you remember how she explained it?
@maliivan19938 жыл бұрын
Tori Lee The simplified version is that if a bag of objects of varying sizes is shaken enough the smaller objects will fall through the cracks between the bigger ones.Since the smaller ones will tend to go towards the bottom they'll inadvertently push the bigger objects up.My explanation is probably far from perfect but that's the gist of it as far as i can remember.
@RKBock5 жыл бұрын
@@maliivan1993 why would they push the bigger objects up?! the premise is, that the only force acting is gravity and that small objects can fill small cracks. so why the hell would the bigger objects suddenly rise?!

It's funny that Stephen says nobody knows, but I remember an episode of How 2 that explained how this phenomenon occurs using a marble stuck inside a bottle of rice. When the container is shook, the smaller items move allowing the larger items to rise and, because the smaller items compact, the larger item settles on top of the smaller items.

i know i know, 10 years later, but the whole idea was that it doesn't seem to be consistent and people still have no idea why it happens, we just know it happens with a few exceptions

Not sure if its the same thing but when you "rub in" butter to flour if you're making scones, if you shake the bowl you are using, any large pieces of butter that are not incorporated will rise to the top.

This clip shows perfectly the problems with trying to protect a particular species -- everything is so incredibly intertwined that you need to protect the whole ecosystem, otherwise it all falls apart like dominoes.
@Otakuonfire10 жыл бұрын
It always seemed logical to me, when products are transport, your sift your hand through a bag or otherwise. smaller bits of nut are obviously going to fill in the 'gaps' made by the movement of the contents. The same way flour is put through a siv, the same way crumbs are always at the bottom of the bag of chips, etc..
@thenerscylla23885 жыл бұрын
Surely the reason they rise to the top is that there less dense and therefore "float" to the top like wood in marcoscopic water molecules

There now exists a theory for why the larger solids rise to the top in a mixture.
@Stormwern12 жыл бұрын
Probably slipperyness. The slipperier they are the more likely they are to move around, and they are more likely to move upwards where it's less dense.

Some one actually earned a PhD by experimenting with different sized ball bearings and a "shake table". As gaps form below the various objects, the smaller objects can fall into those holes more easily - so the smaller objects drift toward the bottom, which moves the larger ones progrssively toward the top. And size is much more important than weight - which would seem to set up at least a few punch lines.

'Cos they pack the Brazil nuts last. Doh!
@123121s112 жыл бұрын
well it is that simple, that's kinda the point. they are looking for something more specific than just "physics" because we already know that everything physical is affected by physics, so it doesn't really need to be said

@Goldsnonuk and @ 12312s1: They actually pretty much have figured it out. I hate to contradict the QI elves here but the "Brazil Nut Effect" the 4 other particle segregation mechanisms that account for 80% of industrial segregation were identified by Kerry Johanson in the early 80's and quantified by his son (of the same name) in the past decade. (I had the pleasure studying under the younger Dr. Johanson for 5 years.)

Could it be because the Brazil nuts have a larger volume they are less dense and rise to the top??

nah. simply because there are more ways for the smaller ones to drop and fill the cracks, resulting in the larger nuts to "float" on top all the smaller ones

found some cool information relating to why they cant be cultivated too "It turns out that Brazil nut flowers require a certain species of bee for pollination. The bees in turn require a certain species of orchid to survive. Male bees must acquire the fragrance of this particular orchid in order to attract female bees. If the forest is damaged by clearcutting, the orchids disappear, along with the bees and the Brazil nuts."
