I live in a tiny village in N. Lincolnshire, UK and we have a hardware store exactly like that. Has everything - maybe not tins of peas, but he'll sell you a packet of seeds to grow your own

1969 born and raised in Chicago, and about the time I was 12 I would look forward to Sunday night because the local PBS channel would air The Two Ronnies, Dave Allen At Large, and Doctor Who at night. Some of my favorite programs along with Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, and all the rest. They will forever be classics. Well, except the current Doctor Who series. Yikes. A billhook is a curved blade with a hook on one side.

Yep the new Doctor Who needs to be taken off air. Its an insult to the legacy. 🙄

Ronnie Barker was a talented comic writer and wrote a lot of the duo's material under a false name. This seems like one of his, as he was fascinated by words and the lunacy of the English language. He was also a very talented sctor. Towards the end of his life he was able to engage in his passion for dealing in antiques. At his funeral, when the coffin was carried into the church, it was preceded by - you've guessed it, four candles.

When I used to work on the building sites years ago we used to send our new boys down to the site manager and get them to ask for a.... Sky Hook or tell him to say that he needed a Tinkle. A really good one was "A long wait (weight)" and if you had a site manager that would play the game he would tell him to sit down in the office leave it 20 mins or so and then tell the lad that he could go. When they asked about the "long wait (weight)" he would say "well you've just had one!" and then the penny would drop 😁😂🤣 Tartan Paint was another good one...the amount of fun we had with those little gems! 😁

The awful weak ending prevents it being a masterpiece though. Corbett however is genius in it.

Lol...that was brilliant word play!! I'm from the States and grew up in the 70's - 80's. I think the only Brit comedy stuff we got here at that time was Monty Python, at least the stuff I got to see. But for some reason this skit feels nostalgic to me even though I didn't grow up in Britain.

Shame that you picked the wrong version where the uploader cut the video short. You could have heard the other ending which they did at the London Palladium. It's worth looking for.

A billhook or bill hook, also called a pruning knife or spar hook, is a versatile cutting tool used widely in agriculture and forestry for cutting woody material such as shrubs, small trees and branches. It is distinct from the sickle. It was commonly used in Europe with an important variety of traditional local patterns. reference to Bollock

Bollocks, Bill hooks, were to hang things on you'd have to be 150years old to appreciate that bill hook's line,i knew the punch line was getting mixed with Bollocks but as a kid didn't really have a clue what bill hook's were sadly i had to google it.for years it played on ronnie barkers mind that ending so he came up with a much better ending decades later you can view this on when as older men they come back on tv & show their older clips they also show a much better alternative ending to bill hooks..😮

I loved the old hardware stores. They sold more or less everything. They always had a different natural newness smell throughout the shop. Same thing with the old department stores. Nowadays department stores newness smells chemically

Ronnie (who wrote their skits) said he wasn't really happy about the ending, but he couldn't think of anything at the time, other than billhooks maybe mistaken for b*ll*ocks if you drop the H.

That last bit used to puzzle me as I've never heard of a Billhook neither had my parents, but it's a type of machete for dealing with thick overgrowth. It's possible to mistake the name for a swear word with bad sight/handwriting! They're both gone now but I think they'll live forever.

You need to watch the rest where they are at the desk,, Ronnie Barker explains how he was never happy with that ending as it was too obscure,, it was only later he said they changed it as a better ending came to mind at a live show,, instead of the shopkeeper being called on at the end a big buxom girl was called on, she took the list, looked at Ronnie C then at Ronnie B and said "Right sir what size knockers are you looking for"?
