I was Gotham sub, Levy just made absolutely amazing content out of something I didn't think was that good. Just a few notes: 3:51 - I played d5 because I really wanted to give that smothered mate, so me kick rook 5:41 - Yes that was hilarious, I actually did not take the pawn on purpose because I wanted to fully focus on checkmate in the fewest moves and I missed that the promotion is check 6:07 - LMAO 9:02 - I know it's bad but I like making that sacrifice because I like the open king, and it catches them off-guard. Breaks the boring board too. 11:41 - It was already obvious he was cheating but here I was like OKAY DUDE for sure, if you want to play perfect Vienna, come get me, I know it all.. 15:18 - ..up until this point. Everything was from my knowledge of the studies from the amazing Gotham Vienna course at chessly. So I kinda panicked at that point. 19:17 - Holy hell! I think that it would work better with an aggressive or tactical strong player (like Rosen or Cramling's dad), because when Stockfish plays a lost position, it doesn't consider the fact that the opponent is lower rated. It will give up and let the lower rated opponent convert the advantage (if they can). A tactical grandmaster, instead, will try every possible trick in order to make the opponent make a mistake, thus having a much more interesting game.

G4 is definitely a natural move for this level of play. Just a bit lower in terms of elo, bishops get trapped exactly like that all the time. You can get to 13/1400s lacking all sorts of knowledge and principles.

Just gonna say, the move g4 at 8:30 I saw all the time when playing around 13-1400. It is very common for lower rated players to push out bishops that way. Usually it's probably not a good move though.

So basically the reason that g4 is a good move in that scenario for the second game is because it forces any attack and pressure off that kings side in initial development allowing for a less aggressive push in most games. It basically keeps black off kings side for a while and gives you the chance to get more centered development by not having to worry about kings side attacks in the early game.

As someone who plays like three games a year, a very casual beginner, watching the cheater's moves when they had the engine turned off was hilarious. Like, even someone as inexperienced as me, someone who couldn't name a single opening (except now the Vienna, I guess), could tell that the player was utterly incompetent, never looking more than about half a move ahead if that. If even I can tell it's bad play, it must be VERY bad.

As someone viewing from outside of the chess community it seems to me it’s gotten to a point where the people who can most effectively cheat are already good chess players. It also seems like when playing online chess the only ways to recognize are not really enough unless theyre doing it blatantly/poorly or have limited knowledge of chess and it shows. Im sure theres endless amounts of accusations just like the recent ones by magnus that cant be proven. Gives a lot of room for cheaters and also for chessmasters to write off a loss as someone cheating.

The player who knows absolutely nothing about chess and just goes in cheating is always super easy to figure out. They’ll have a win rate near perfect, win rate won’t vary vs opponent, moves all same length. no obvious opening book because the engine can just calc as it goes. and you just know when the opponent is seemingly playing randomly and you suddenly get crushed with some weird ass tactic you couldn’t have imagined, and then the accuracy score is like 99.99 or something. Some players I suspect of cheating for a few moves here or there but you can’t always tell. These players are generally decent but ask stockfish for help when they get into a confusing situation. Those aren’t the players who take the standard 8s or so for a ridiculously obvious move.

If the cheater used Stockfish for that move, which is most likely, then their thought process was, "I'll play the move the that Stockfish tells me to." Stockfish, in turn, does not use a thought process that relies on the possibility of the opponent screwing up. Stockfish simply does not play hope chess. Even if the cheater played this move on their own, how do we know they actually thought that deeply about the move? It could simply be as shallow as, "I attack bishop," and it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

My thoughts on the sounds: When there are a lot of moves, especially in openings when you kind of rush through, it makes it difficult to focus on what you're saying. The rest of the time it's fine. Conclusion is, personally if you're gonna use sounds, maybe only turn them on after the opening? Is that a hassle? Idk. Great video as always!

Imagine an enemy soldier tries to run past you while you're poised to attack. What do you do? Obviously, you tackle the soldier mid-run. You don't just wait for them to pass you by. "Okay, so why is it only for pawns capturing pawns?" Good question. I guess pawns are just really slow runners (which is in character), but also really fast attackers. That's the lore reason, but if you want the historical reason, here it is: In old versions of chess, pawns didn't have a two-square starting move. That was added to speed things up. But then players realized that a pawn could use this new move to completely skip past the threat of capture from an opposing pawn. This messed with the way that pawns interact, which is a huge part of chess. So they made a new rule: if your opponent's pawn tries to run past your pawn, then your pawn can capture their pawn anyway. In a way, the opponent's pawn is being captured "in passing," or "en passant" in French. And with that, the en passant capture was born.

I'm about 1150 right now, but I only know how to fianchetto. I play super-defensively until the opponent blunders big when I anticipate a few 4-5 move exchanges that win material. I generally end up letting the opponent into the middle two ranks, and when I lose, it is generally because I have less room to move and open properly. I basically play as if I'm trying to let the opponent's pieces freeze to death. Will learning a few better openings and responses to openings better be just a small advantage, or will it be something that gets me to 1300 or more?

@8:46 is actually the move I would've played in that exact same situation, without any bot or cheating... Been doing that move for years and it works out for me, in like 80% of the time. Same for the move on @13:27, would be also one that would come to mind, just to put some pressure on my opponent.

Yes but you wouldn't get 96% accuracy games. Not to mention the move in 13:27 is wrong, Levy even says that it's because his engine was on low depth, on higher depth engines don't suggest this move.

To be fair, if I was in the position, I would have done the bishop knight trap in game 2, but and I probably wouldn't have taken the bishop immedicably. Its a good tactic I've used when lossing a game before. Bishop pair for me. Loss at the end.

Was quite confused for a second when you said piece sounds bc my first thought was "what does peace sound like" but wasn't sure if I had heard correctly. A few seconds later I had come to the conclusion that you had actually said pee sounds, but that idea was quickly shot down bc that would make even less sense.
