I dont see why everyone's hating on her french. My god, if she knows english, french, german, and now working on japanese, thats A LOT more impressive than these people posting on youtube. anyhow, she's amazing. +1 for Hilary Hahn

Calm down, everybody! In all seriousness, it is always good to see native English speakers making the effort to speak a foreign language. Classical music definitely requires an awareness of foreign languages, particularly Italian, Latin, French, and German. Hahn has said that she would like to continue her study of languages, which is great! I cannot play the violin like Hahn (obviously), but I can speak French and German (very nervously).

Her French is actually very good. Unlike most english speakers she doesn't have much of an accent. Most importantly- she is speaking comfortably and not just practicing with a teacher but actually talking to a French person on an interview that hundreds of people are going to see and that takes a lot of courage to do!

her french is not impressive at all BUT i'm french and I understand everything she wants to say... IMO it's enough, she's an artist not C3PO ! It's already amazing to see such a young and talented artist who tries to make an interview in french...such a dificult langage

Pretty impressive that she at least has a basic grasp of several languages. I only barely know a 2nd language. Also amazing how here she looks more like a 13 year old than someone in their 20s.

I am translating the above text hoping not to make mistakes. Musicians are naturally skilled for foreign languages. Her level is not intermediate as someone wrote it in a previous comment but very good and potentially excellent if she would practice. English is a difficult language contrarily to a generally accepted idea. Simply it is easy to be mediocre about it. It's a language that encompasses few rules and which is spoken somehow "by instinct". Only natives can master for instance putting the stress on the right syllables and using the right preposition after the verbs.

Very true. I am a native English speaker. We are so used to people from all over the world speaking English idiosyncratically, that we don't get upset when we hear something unorthodox. In my experience, the French leap on you if you make an error!

@@pneron2032 yes ! For French French people a langage mistake is an "offense " against French culture. That the way it is...

As a singer and conductor, I agree completely. Having a trained musical ear helps a great deal in learning pronunciation, too. And her fluency in several languages demonstrates her brilliance, her motivation, and her full education that she brings to her understanding of language. This is much more difficult in general for Americans because we only have direct geographical connection to two countries, whereas in Europe you can see that many people are multi-lingual and have the opportunity to use more than their primary language.

I'm a 56-year-old Nebraskan and I still don't speak my own language as well as I'd like--let alone all of those other cool languages out there in the world.
