Hillary and Janine my two favorite violists. They are one and two in my mind and I don’t know much about that world. But I listen to them every week whoever I listen to last is number one. Especially with their new stuff. Hillary seems to be more open and free. She is always so perfect but I did think she was a little stiff but not lately. I love Janine so intense yet I always felt she made everyone in the orchestra better. Two wonderful women. I’m 75 and going to see Hillary play Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto this month.

When a master like Hilary says something like, 'Pay attention to the rests..." you write it in your notes. When such a master returns to the thought so often, and from so many perspectives, with such obvious belief in it; you write that in your soul and live it.

@@astroneural I'll let you figure it out, it shouldn't be too hard, I hope. The Unconsoled is incredible. All of Ishiguro's novels are completely different from one another in some ways but on a certain level they're all related. In the realm where strings and bows entwine, Hilary, Brett, and Eddy's worlds align, A conversation rich with insights deep, About solo violin's secrets they now keep. Hilary's voice, a maestro's soothing tone, Recalls the repertoire, the music sown, From Bach to Paganini, they reminisce, On stages where their talents did not miss. They speak of vulnerabilities they've known, The moments when they felt so all alone, On stage, where every scratch could make them wince, Yet, through it all, they've found their own unique sense. They muse on solo works, the sonatas bold, Isai's creations, stories to be told, For different players, each piece designed, A glimpse into their world, intertwined. From Sarasate to Goosby, Oistrakh's grace, To Chrysler's intensity in every case, They ponder how a composer might ignite, The essence of these players' heartfelt light. In this convergence of the violin's art, They've shared their insights, each playing their part, As their paths cross in London's grand embrace, The magic of their music fills the space. So here's to Hilary, Brett, and Eddy's chat, A meeting of great minds where music's at, In harmony, they've shared their wisdom wide, In this poetic tribute, we take in their stride.

She has a very smooth and refined speaking style, yet it doesn't come across as studied. It seems like it's just the way she is inside as a person. I don't know if that's the result of the musical disciplines she's learned as a violinist, or her violin style is the outward representation of the inner person which we hear when she's speaking. Maybe it's a bit of both. Her pauses, volume dynamics and inflections when she's speaking is almost musical in and of itself. This was a very enjoyable half hour to watch and listen to!

Ok, Brett and Eddy each write a piece for Hilary, separately. It would not only be interesting to hear a violinist write music for/to her in the way they discussed, but how two different violinists would write for her. And, could Hilary tell who wrote which piece from playing it and knowing the guys?

I’m _not_ a musician-I can’t play two notes on any instrument-but this conversation might be one of my favorites on KZbin. Hilary, Brett, and Eddy are fully engaged in what each other have to say and you can just feel the comfortable easiness and affection they all have for one another. (Hilary’s friendship with Brett and Eddy makes me appreciate Twoset Violin, the channel that made it all possible, even more.) And Hilary is, as always, effortlessly charming-Brett and Eddy are, understandably, still a little “starstruck” by her but you cant tell-she’s really an adoring fan of theirs, also.

I sometimes find listening to older musicians brings a certain feeling that mostly seems to come with age. I was comparing, for example, the violinists György Pauk and Janine Jansen playing Bártok's Violin Concert No.1. Both played stunningly but I felt Pauk brought something extra in the feel and delivery that, as I said, seems to come with age. I'm really surprised that many violinists seem to ignore Bártok's Violin Concert No.1. The first movement alone is incredibly beautiful. I was hoping Hilary had both his concertos available on a single CD. Nevertheless, György Pauk is brilliant. Every time I see Hilary I think of my niece. They look so similar. Distant twins.

Ysaÿe was.. ten years old when Ernst died, I think. But have the same issue in litterature and philosophy - a lot of the early 1800s or late 1700s authors are often a lot less conservative than what sets the tone towards the end of the 1800s. It's incredibly common to find writers in the late 1800s who employ a style they think was dignified in the "olden days", unlike the uncultured present, etc., or that they invoke a romanticised image of the past completely consciously (sometimes as satire, specifically making fun of the pompousness of the cultural elites). But then when we come into the 1900s, these types of contrasts are basically settled by a authoritative narrative taught in schools about how the "peoples of the past", as one of my professors actually said once, uniformly thought about how theater and books should be written. Which then differs from that previous period by the descriptions from our immediately available "olden days". It's no doubt exactly the same for music: I see Giuiani-pieces on guitar played as if they were concert-pieces made to be played as a lead piano in front of an orchestra, for example. But this is an invention coming in, probably completely exclusively, almost 100 years after Guiliani died. Like Hillary says: there are so many things in the sheet music that we just don't have specific information of. So while there is a legitimate need to interpret what these pieces are supposed to sound like - simply declaring one way of playing them as the correct one (rather than an established interpretation) is extremely arrogant. Not in the least because the established way of playing it can be demonstrated to be not just invented recently, but also that it differs from the few suggestions that are there in the sheet music. Sometimes it's incredibly blatant - I'm playing Brescianello pieces on the guitar now(style is 50 years before Bach, although they lived at the same time - but Brescianello actually composed lute-pieces for string-instruments, not for harpsichords like Bach did), going through the source manuscripts. And I'm discovering that entirely professional sheet music that costs lots of money and is used in schools, suggests fingering that isn't in the manuscript(for often good and obvious reasons), or just outright ignores notation for trills and ornamentation. One example didn't even mention that the piece is supposed to have the form it's written in, and instead just plastering on a 3/4 and a "with passion", very specifically suggesting to a classical guitarist that this is supposed to be played like a romantic Spanish piece. Which is just utterly wrong. It's like going on about how Paganini was a famous componist of brass band marching tunes because of the bpm-notation we think he played the pieces at. Classical conservatory music teaching is full of this stuff.

I don't play the violin, but I think it's one of those instruments that comes the closest to sonically representing human emotion. Did some of these composers you were talking about write just to show off technical skill, or did they consider these kinds of works to actually be music? When I hear them I don't think of music, I think of the skill it takes to perform them. On the other hand, I'll listen to a performance that isn't particularly technically challenging, yet it can be so moving to hear because it resonates my emotions rather than my intellect.

Amazing insights from all three of them thereby making such shows for the audiences an excellent way to learn something new. Three musical themes come to mind, while listening to this. First is the Leonard Bernstein TV Shows of music learning and appreciation for children that ran for 3 years, as Mr. Bernstein became the Conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (the shows are available on YT.) Second, was watching and listening to my Great Uncle compose Chamber Music and how he went from the Piano, to the Cello, then the Viola and lastly the Violin to write each musical score for that instrument, while playing that instrument and writing down the notes on the sheet paper. When all of that was done, he would write the complete music score for whatever piece he was thinking through. Third, what do do with this 120 plus year old violin that belonged to my Great Grandfather, that is in need of restoration, before it can be played again? Keep it and play it or donate it to a local museum and someone records some of the music it is capable of producing. Choices, choices, choices.

Seeing, discovering the boys a year ago, my first thought were the same Berstein concerts. I was 6 year old, and glued to the tv (Intervision). Something historical: TwosetViolin tours US this month. Their first concert is in the same place where Berstein had those concerts: New York Lincoln Center:-) Their show was sold out in 5 (FIVE) minutes when the tickets were released.

Five Minutes? That concert hall is a charmed place to be in to listen to music. @@kd3684

Watching this was fun and enjoyable. It was interesting to listen to some thoughtful conversations and insightful stories, along with personal experiences you shared that many musicians can learn from. From my perspective music is an art that musicians utilize as a 'tool' to express their creativity and emotions through their chosen instruments in a way that cannot be done without the influence of music. I believe that music is the most powerful link that keeps us in touch with our true or inner selves, which we don't normally express in our everyday lives. I can't even imagine how empty and boring it would be to live without the influence of music. This video was really enjoyable it only felt like a few minutes, which reminds me of the saying that goes, "Time flies when you're having fun." Thank you for sharing it! :)

Ms Hahn, I think you are the only artist I dream of having perform one of my works. Maybe one day 🙂 I enjoyed listening to you talk about these works, and would love to watch videos of you speaking from your own personal point of view about other works you've performed.
