I’ve wanted to make a Bardcore cover of Chappell Roan’s music since I first heard it, but that want became a need after seeing her fantasy inspired outfits at the VMAs. So I invite you to the Pink Pony Inn: a warm, raucous place where you can leave your troubles at the door and lose yourself in song and dance.
The Art:
I found a great source with an armored woman riding a horse, but preferred the pink horse from the next page, so I combined them and made some extensive edits.
Belli fortis, par Konrad Kyeser von Eichstädt France, Chantilly, Bibliothèque et archives du château - 348 (633) 005 to 007

The Lyrics:
I know thou wantest me to stay
I cannot deny these maddening visions of me in Calais
And I heard there is a wondrous place
Where a pawn can be a queen every blessed day
I have these wicked dreams of leaving
Annecy
Oh Saint Cecelia, I swear she calleth me
Shan’t make my mother proud
The thought is too obscene
To see her darling girl
I know that she shall scream
Lord, what hast thou done?
Thou’rt a pink pony maid
Thou shouldst be a nun
Oh mother, I just want to run
With the mummers and clowns
‘Tis where I belong
Down at the Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing, let them call it a sin
I shall keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Inn
Pink Pony Inn
Barefoot, I spin upon the floor
Ale and mead aplenty, and a sign above the door
Firelight, and a boar’s head on the wall
Every night a new reminder why I left it all
I thank my wicked dreams, a year from
Annecy
Oh Saint Cecelia, I owe my thanks to thee
Shan’t make my mother proud
The thought is too obscene
To see her darling girl
I know that she shall scream
Lord, what hast thou done?
Thou’rt a pink pony maid
Thou shouldst be a nun
Oh mother I just want to run
With the mummers and clowns
‘Tis where I belong
Down at the Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing, let them call it a sin
I shall keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Inn
Pink Pony Inn
Think not, I left you all behind
Still I love my Annecy, thou’rt ever on my mind
And mother, every Sæterndæg
I can hear thy Southern lilt
Two hundred leagues away, crying
Lord, what hast thou done?
Thou’rt a pink pony maid
Thou shouldst be a nun
Oh mother I just want to run
With the mummers and clowns
‘Tis where I belong
Down at the Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing, let them call it a sin
I shall keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Inn
Pink Pony Inn
I shall keep on dancing!
I shall keep on dancing!
I shall keep on dancing!
I shall keep on dancing!

Their voices don't even sound the same. Chappel Roan's voice is very twangy with a strong nasal whine in the background of her vocals. Hildegard's is crystal clear while nailing every note with perfect pitch. I much prefer Hildegard's voice.

Honestly I can't figure out who's better at "parody" these people or Weird Al himself. Because my goodness the artist skill that goes into these songs is nuts. You take an existing ditty, and turn it into something all it's own.

The way it all makes sense not just rhythmically but also in the story, i.e. St. Cecilia being the patron saint of music so of course she's calling Chappell, or Calais being a major port city in Medieval times like how LA is a large modern city on the ocean, deserves to be talked about more (edit: not to mention sæterndæg!!!)

hahaha as a Swiss to me they are so far away from each other. Annecy is half an hour or an hour from Geneva (so quite in the south) and Calais is where the canal is, very close to England.
@samdierickx7863
@samdierickx7863 Ай бұрын
aktschuwally: While they both belong to the modern country of France, in medieval times Annecy would not have belonged to the kingdom of France. It was a possession of the counts of Geneve and the counts of Savoy, both at least nominal subjects of the German Emperor. And lets not talk about the period after 1347 when Calais fell into the hands of the English! ;)

I love the rhyming of Inn with Sin! All your covers are amazing, but this one in particular is just hitting different! Honestly, the image, the wording, all of it is low-key giving me Brave vibes.

Now this is *extremely* interesting historically. The tavern known as the “Brasserie du cheval rosé,” part of the abbey in Sainte-Cécile, was notorious in the 14th Century across all of what is now France for a “level of debauchery and ungodly behaviour unseen outside Babylon itself.” This probably explains why it was burned down along with the abbey on Papal orders in 1393. What has never been known, however, is which Sainte-Cécile it was located in. Everyone assumes the one near Maçon, and that certainly is the nearest one to Annecy, but the mention of Calais also in this song finally proves that it was actually in Sainte-Cécille Plage, just north of Etaples and a little under a day’s ride from Calais.
