A tent review that Andrew Park would be proud of, a quality review👍. High price, high quality, high performance, attention to detail is superb.........stupidly good tent, no one in their right mind would doubt its credentials. Price is getting silly now however, bordering on stupid, but then again, a bloke that goes out 2 times a week on the sauce could piss and smoke 700 quid in two months with consummate ease. Who’s stupid then? ATB🇬🇧🏴

Really good review, no waffle, just facts. I have a 1970s Hilleberg designed "KEB" 3 man tent which has been in my loft for several years. It was the very first tent designed by Bo Hilleberg and made to be errected with the outer and inner joined together. I recently sorted some of my gear out, found the Keb and put it up in the garden. It is still intact with no sticky fly sheet (unlike my Wild Country Super Nova) so I thought it was worth re-proofing. I now have a very useable tent, althouh not a lightweight, which my wife and I used when cycle touring in the 1980s. I can't remember what I paid for it but I know it wasn't cheap at the time. Hilleberg standards remain high it seems.

Just ordered the Wild Country Helm1, although I did really fancy this as well but for me, it was down to price, which is why I went with the Helm 1. A very easy setup and looks a very sturdy tent as well, you can see why you play the extra price but I always object to paying extra for a footprint. I love the way in inner is put up last, allowing a dry pitch, no matter the weather and I always love a dome tent, so I can sit up. If I could have justified the price, by using it regularly, I would have defiantly gone with this. Really detailed review Chris and you make a good point, you get what you pay for and this looks worth every penny, cheers Alan

Great, insightful & instructive review la'! It's good to remind us that Hilleberg tents are far from cheap. But it's absolutely true that 'you get what you pay for'. I tend to be quite hard on my gear. But i know that I'd feel much more confident going out into the wilderness & facing gnarly weather with a Hilleberg shelter in my backpack. Looking at the Allak, Staika or Tarra 2-man tents - probably in the same (Bronze)Sand colour. for largely solo Autumn-Winter camping, hunting & mountain expeditions. Keep up the good work bud.

The Soulo is an awesome product! It is a roomy one person tent and it's a very enjoyable experience to live inside it, any where any time! It's considered a bit on the heavy side in todays hectic microweight regime. I feel that the comfort is well worth the weight which in realistic terms is a non issue. I pitch mine this same way to, with the width pole first so that it comes underneath the two length poles. I see that Hilleberg themselves does not have a routine but does this both ways. However, the top flap sits better on my tent when the two long poles are on top.

Another great video Chris. I saw yours and Al's & Blue's Storm Arwen videos recently and I suspect these types of storms (eg. Storm Barra only a few days later) will only become more frequent in future with the climate crisis, so investing in a tent such as the Soulo is a wise investment IMHO. As they say 'Buy wise, buy once.' Cracking review, it's even made me think twice about getting a footprint, as I've scoffed a bit at the idea in the past - I've always used my orange Lifeventure emergency survival bag as a ground sheet and porch ground sheet, we'll see. I was well impressed at your Soulo still standing at Sykeside when the camping pods blew off their supports in storm Arwen, imagine a double poled Kerlon 1800 Soulo - indestructable! Thanks for the review mate.. but right now my credit card is 'occupied' 😒

It bothers my love of symmetry and order that the three poles do not intersect at the same point. Why is that? But I’m still gonna get in red very soon! Great review! Two questions if you don’t mind; So the guylines always go to the same point? Does one have to peg it out before inserting the poles? Alot of other set ups show it being done in the opposite order? Any reason for your way?
@MCMOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Hello Simon, it's just personal preference the way I set it up, trial and error. The tent is totally free standing, so no you don't need to peg it out first, again just what works for me. Re the guy lines, the included pegs are only enough for both guys to go to the same point but I think it was designed that way..... As in the guys should flow from the pole angles. Thanks for the video. Really informative. I notice you put the middle pole in underneath but instructions say install last/over the top - is there a reason for this? Do you have to apply much pressure to the poles at the top to attach the clips? Mine seems to need a fair bit of tension for the material to stretch up.
@MCMOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Can be either or - Hille changed this with the black label version as the 10mm poles are much stiffer! A fantastic shelter - for me, the best one person shelter on the planet. Re tension, it will get easier as the fabrics naturally stretch a bit. The BL is mega difficult to clip on..... Apply slight down pressure to the poles and it will become easier.

@MCMOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Varies, can be anything from around 50 up to 70L..... Can pack the tent much smaller using a dry sack instead of the supplied bag and storing separate to poles and pegs

Loved watching this very in depth review of the Soulo. Cracking content in your videos, subscribed and looking forward to watching your journeys. I was wondering, what size dry bag do you think would be needed to put the Soulo in and also what size rucksack do you think would be best to fit this in along with rest of one's gear... 60litre minimum? All the best!
@MCMOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew - thanks for the kind words and your subscription. I think mine is a 30L dry sack which is huge but it doesn't matter as makes it easier to stuff the tent in - esp if wet! Still compresses down small too. I use an 65L bag, but you could get away with 50 I reckon 👍

Hi Chris, best Soulo reviews I’ve seen. Quick question, what made you go for the Sand colour over the other two colours?
@MCMOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, thanks for the feedback. Nothing other than personal preference mate..... I've heard the green can be quite warm in summer months and the red stands out too much for my liking. Sand blends in quite well to most of the landscapes I wild camp in! Hope that helps 👍

So you can direct vent the inner AND outer fly and protect from the rain with the "topper?"

Hi I really like the look of the Soulo . Just a quick question. When pitching in rain, before you get the rain cover over the vent attached, can water not get into the inner tent? Has this happened to you?any ideas to prevent it? Also do you always use the footprint? Can I ask what’s longest trek u been on with it. I m looking at doing the Cape Wrath Trail next year, very long through hike and camping.

hi chris hope your well mate. were the best place for the soulo and footprint mate.

I got mine from Nordic Outdoor mate as they had an offer on with a free footprint - I'd suggest emailing them and asking when they are due to get stock in.

So the rain fly also has a mesh vent, and the topper covers that. Interesting. This could be the best way to get maximum ventilation.

Subscribed Do you have any experience with the Akto,? There are people like myself who cannot decide between the Soulo or the Akto. What do think 🤔 Thank you
@MCMOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Hello, sadly not - however, I think they are very different tents for different purposes - what are you looking to use it for ?
@jarrahdrum3 жыл бұрын
@@MCMOutdoors hi, I really don’t know at the moment because I haven’t been in a tent for over 20 years. I’ve just always wanted to go camping but work and life circumstances have just got in the way. I live in Wales, so waterproof is a must first I quite like the idea of stealth camping but I don’t know if I’d fancy a bivvy bag. So In a way I’m leaning towards the Akto, but I do like the headroom that the Soulo has :)
@MCMOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
For me, I like to be able to sit up - so for that reason, the Soulo was the one for me. I also think it's more stable - given the pole configuration. If headroom and strength are your priorities, Soulo. If you want something more stealthy, the Akto is smaller and lighter - although only a hooped design. The rest is up to you!
@jarrahdrum3 жыл бұрын
@@MCMOutdoors thank you I appreciate your help and advice I think just for comfort wise and also the fact that it’s freestanding the Soulo is the one It’s all very interesting Cheers for fast reply Oh yes, no matter which I choose!, none are available at the moment from what I can see. The demand is huge Greetings from Barry 🏴

Great video 👍 just liked it. You have very similar kit to myself and I like you, like to take a few luxuries with me such as a few cans etc. What capacity backpack do you tend to use for 1-2 overnight stays in uk weather where you would pack winter clothing?
@MCMOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Darren - I use a 65 or 70L in the Winter as a general rule, although I've used a Fjallraven Singi 48 with side pouches for a recent Winter camp.
@darrengough44004 жыл бұрын
MCM Outdoors - that’s really helpful. I am looking for a single backpack for both summer and winter backpacking. 1-2 nights with some luxuries. All my winter gear With all food, water and luxuries comes in at about 17kg. Am looking at packs around 58-60 litres so sounds as though I am on the right track. I know people can go a lot lighter but I like my comforts 👍
