I have never seen a Hilleberg tent in real life. I have, but rarely, experienced such a storm. I’m 68 yo. That Soulo, black label, is one hell of a tent. My three season, DCF tent weighs less than 1.5 pounds/0.68Kg, and would be destroyed in that wind. MUCH RESPECT…from an old veteran, retired in the US, foothills of the Smoky Mountain National Park.

The Soulo, esp in black label variant is in my humble opinion, the most robust and easy to pitch (in bad weather) tent on the market. Each one is hand made, by well paid and highly trained staff - the cost is huge, but most of that goes on the staff. It would not be unusual to expect 15/20 years of usable life from the tent - the fabric would ultimately become weaker as UV rays degrade it. I have spent over an hour on the phone with Kim Andersson from Hilleberg discussing their tents, the prices and production - the tents performance speak for themselves, superb.

Cracking challenging camp that Chris. It looked like you really enjoyed it mate. Totally agree, the Soulo is hard to beat. It’s so easy to pitch in high winds with it clipping on bit by bit from the bottom up and a couple of guys out to take the strain, sorted. Most tents would be a nightmare pitching in wind but not the Soulo! Good to see you out and enjoying your passion mate. ATB 👍⛺️💨

Great to see you back out in a spot which was introduced to me by the channel. I've never owned a hilleberg but the dream tent for me is the nammatj. They just look quality tents but out of budget at the moment sadly. Interesting comments about the vern 1 as my budget would stretch to a nortent. I remember your 1st impressions video where you pitched the vern 1 in your garden and said you was looking forward to testing it. Maybe this camp was the ideal opportunity instead of the soulo? I had a similar problem with my rain cover the weekend just gone on my Osprey Aether but managed to keep hold of it and put it away. It doesn't have any attachment points to the bag like on my Osprey Hikelite. Seems like a bit of an oversight.

Great video, really liked the way you went through your thought process on where to pitch, shows you're not just setting up and thinking the tent will do it all. I don't bother with bag covers in wind for that reason. Use a liner all year round as well. Looked like a parachute before it went 😂 Quick question, are the poles pre bent on the tent, some say they are and some not.. Cheers. 👍🏻

That was absolutely spot on what you said about the Soulo Chris, I couldn't agree with you more. I have never had a Black Label version but i have had 3 red labels since 2011 and although these days since about a year ago i no longer have one because i have been making an effort to lighten my pack weight as part of my desire to go easier on my body as i age and also to enjoy a bit more space plus i also i won't knowingly go out in extreme winds any more but thats just because i have done that more times than i care to remember but if i was i would certainly buy another Soulo. Interestingly, I made money when i sold my 1st one because of inflation, and I got all my money back on the other 2 so they are a decent investment if you look after them. Have you noticed its always off the people who have never owned one ....they always throw the condensation excuse thats mostly suffered by people using them in conditions where a 3 season tent would suffice and if its not that its people with a fiscal involvment with a brand thats trying hard to compete but very often failing miserably 😊

Soulo is (in my humble opinion), the strongest one person shelter on the market. A doddle to pitch and strike camp in foil conditions. Once correctly pitched, it's strength is extreme.

I sold my Hilleberg Staika due to the Vern 1PC. Polycotton tents are amazing when it comes to condensation management and the absolute quietness in extreme weather. The Vern 1PC is a fortress, especially after I upgraded to beefier poles.

You can't beat the quality of the Soulo. Out of interest I took 3 tents out to see if I could assemble them during the storm, MSR Elixir 2, Xmid 2 and the Yun Chuan 2. The result was that none of them could be pitched. MSR poles snapped, XMid 2 ripped after a peg came out and pierced the fly. The Yun Chuan held up for about 2 minutes before imploding. So you have answered my question on how a tent can be pitched in those conditions something that isn't considered 👍 Great stuff as always Chris have a great Xmas and a happy new year and ATB for 2025 for you and your family.🍾

Good stuff and interesting information there. Many people don't consider how difficult it can be to actually pitch a tent in high winds - the Soulo excels here and was designed with that in mind. Same for striking camp. It's a superb shelter designed for bad weather.

Definitely picked the right day for testing the tent. 😂. I love my Kebnekaise mitts, fantastic quality. It’s a nice touch from Valley and Peak getting the little bag of Skittles with each order. Really enjoyed this one mate and good to see u out again. I love my Soulo BL and it proved it’s worth a couple of weeks ago on Nethermost Pike, I had 34.5mph gusts and never doubted the tent one bit, I had the head end into the wind so my door was facing the views and it never budged. Never tried that one mate. For me, the Soulo is the ultimate one person tent for bad weather camping. Not just the sheer strength, also the ease of pitching, handling and striking of camp.

I have to agree. The Soulo is so simple to pitch in all weather. The Storm star is slightly harder to pitch, but when it is up, it is so stable, even in severe winds.

Tent was solid - hope it served as a good demonstration of its capabilities. The cosy cover does mate - it's fantastic and the down is really high quality. For the size and weight of the pack, it's superb.

I can't camp myself (wheelchairs don't agree with it😂) so I go vicariously through folk like you and like you, when I was able bodied, I loved camping in wilder weather. It's really annoying people pulling stones from the wall. I keep rebuilding it and I see again idiots have piled up stones again. I was up there in the snow from Storm Bert, very sheltered from the gales. I hope you had as much fun. I decided against last Friday due to the wind going from the south to the north. I wanted to sleep, so went to the YD. There's nothing wrong with the camp if you've got and can use the kit, can read a map and experience like yourself. Valley and Peak are a brilliant company with great customer service. I wish you and your family festive greetings. I hope you have a great 2025.

Great video. I don’t think it’s unfair to say the Soulo is overkill for most conditions though. It’s not often you’d deliberately choose to go out in storm conditions, but they will give you peace of mind if you’re summit camping in the middle of nowhere I guess. I’m probably going to get the Unna as personally I reckon I’d get far more use out of it year round. ATB.

People moan if you use them in 'good conditions', then moan if you go out in 'bad' conditions; it's hilarious. Unna is a great tent too - very versatile. You can get a mesh inner for the Soulo which is good for summer weather. If I could only keep one tent, would be the Soulo for now. Unna can be double poled, or use 10.25mm poles, or just add more guys for extra strength.

Useable lifespan, 20 years plus if looked after - UV will eventually kill the fabric - but the cost over say, that time - is really low when you think about it - 50 quid a year, that's not counting however many nights out you enjoy each year in it

@@MCMOutdoors yeah it’s a fair point. I want to do more extended trips abroad as well next year to places like Iceland and Norway where I can’t plan for the weather so I guess the Soulo would be absolutely ideal for that. Decisions, decisions! Thanks for the info.

All good! Said cover was located on the southern flanks of the hill on the descent! Just about spotted in some brush and an extensive detour sorted it!
