In university while studying journalism I did an essay on the power media has to frame a story and used Hillsborough's coverage by The Scum as an analysis on how wrong it can go when the media does a poor job. To counter that you guys did a brilliant job summarising this nightmare. As a Liverpool fan of 30 years... thank you! RIP the 97. Add to note that you showed my local football team with the 'safe standing' business, the Western Sydney Wanderers, and let's just say that most fans are not happy with those. The Wanderers do have a horrific problem with hooliganism, ironically, because apparently some of us are determined to not learn from history.

I've had an interest in Holocaust and the Third Reich most of my life, and, looking at everything's that's happened in the world in the last several decades and the U.S. in the last 30-40 years, it's very clear too many people haven't learned from history.

You should do an episode about the donnington disaster of 1987 where a massive fan stampede during Guns N' Roses set at the 1987 Monsters Of Rock Festival at Donnington Park. Event security was so incapable of controlling the crowd which was estimated to have been 120.000+ (most of whom snuck into the venue unticketed) that several other bands had to stop their shows to try and assist security in controlling the crowd. Iron Maiden headlined that sunday evening and they had to stop their show no less than four times to pull people onto the stage, bruce dickinson even threatened to end the performance if the crowd didn't move back.

It definitely sent shockwaves throughout the whole country, shook up the way those sorts of performances were executed and regulated in many ways similar to those mentioned in sports reforms in this video. I remember hearing that there were parents all over who put in similar prohibitions on concerts over it. It was enough of a cultural cornerstone at the time to make it into a "Weird" Al song, but I don't remember the last time I heard anything about it. If anyone wants another great even more in-depth look into this, look up ESPN's "30 for 30: Hillsborough" video. It's nearly 2 hours and goes into even greater detail, including the events that led to the panel that FINALLY brought the truth to light. I had vaguely heard of what happened at Hillsborough before the night I watched it, and for the entire time, I was glued to my TV from shock, anger, frustration, and vindication.

I remember watching this on telly/the news. I was really young and unable to understand what hooliganism had to do with pushing too many people into a confined space causing the crush and death of those fans. This is a good video, but it fails to address the ongoing impact of the tragedy - and its misreporting - on the experience of Liverpool fans when they travel abroad, particularly the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final in Paris, where Liverpool fans again found themselves in a dangerous crush scenario and the misconceptions of the French police, due to Hillsborough, meant they ignored warning signs and accused the club's fans of causing the situation when the police and ground management was at fault. For fans who attended both occasions, it was a fresh trauma and reopened PTSD. I am not a football fan; but this tragedy and that the UEFA Champions League Final was able to happen again to the same club riles me no end. The club's fans need justice.

This event was my first awareness of soccer/footie in Britain, and it still haunts me, especially as I learn more & more about how much was done to deflect blame to the victims instead of the apathy/hostility of officials & the media. Even now, I still worry about the same thing happening here, a disaster at a city considered notorious for rowdy sports fans, with the same "eh, they're from Philly/Chicago/insert-city-here, they probably caused it, they deserved it" reaction. Karl, you have my sympathies for having to grow up in the shadow of this disaster.

I have many fond memories of feeling like my ribs were going to be crushed against the front barricade at concerts in the 90s-2000s. Good times. The barricades to prevent people from rushing the stage. Often they're only about waist high for me, but at some shows, they were like ribs high, and that could be very uncomfortable if you were front row right against it. As I was watching this video, I was thinking it was surprising we don't hear about more serious trampling incidents given the level of crowd crush and lack of much serious crowd control I had experienced at fairly run of the mill rock concerts. Obviously it pales in comparison to incidents like Hillsborough, but it had me thinking. . .

I've never been in a crowd that size, but at school we were doing a fire drill when the idea got around the crowd that the fire was real. Kids panicked and started to stampede. Problem was the only way out was through a single wide gate in the chain link fence around the school creating a bottle neck. In a crowd like that you're completely at their mercy and it's all you can do to stay standing with everyone pushing and shoving. I got pinned against the fence for a bit. Luckily no one got hurt seriously just bruises and anger. Ever since I've been afraid of crowds.
