I would love to learn about the set up with the mic. It looks like he's calling his effects changes vocally. Am I wrong? How does this work? Is it dependable?

It's a MD Mic. He uses it Live and in these videos for giving instructions not only to Sound Engineers but Singers and other Musicians like ''Turnaround, another chorus, slow down...'' This is only for people involved in performance, not for everyone outside.

What's the point on making this kind of videos when the guitarist is hiding his fingers from the camera?

its not a tutorial, it is just to guide You to what each instrument does in the Song...

This would have frustrated me to no end when I was a younger guitarist. Now I'm older and still stink at guitar. However it IS possible to figure out what he's doing when you have more knowledge, which is a crappy answer I know. But learn about CAGED. Realize at every moment he's playing a chord and you know what the chord is if you have the music. If not you can figure it out by ear. And even that part becomes easier with repetition. From there just look at the general location he is on the neck. 3rd fret? 10th fret? If the chord is a D then you can look up how to play those chords at each location. He may be doing a variation but usually you can pick those out with your ear. Yes it will take many times through the song and lots of practice but it gets easier and easier each time. When you couple that with the fact that this, like most worship songs and frankly pop songs in general, is very repetitive. He's doing maybe 3 or 4 actual distinct things here. Not to minimize his effort. He's an amazing, clean, top notch musician. But this is doable. You have to outsmart the music, find the patterns, ask tons of questions, experiment and most of all repeat repeat repeat.
