Man, you knocked it out of the park again Sebastian! That long scale is an amazing steel and your technique is superb. I know Dick McIntire and Sol Hopii didn't use your chosen C#min tuning which I was curious about, but now I see why you use it instead. It's so close to your High A tuning that you are using here, it makes it easy for you to retune between the two tunings. Cool...Thanks
@HawaiianSteelGuitar2 жыл бұрын
That is exactly the reason, Jesse, from what I heard Sol K Bright used the same kind of C#minor, most probably for the same reason !

This one leaves me breathless! I dived into a couple of your arrangements and am learning alot just learning them and playing them up to speed. I'm not ready for this one yet but look forward to the day i can play it. Anyway, do you know the Sol Hoopi son "I like you" I absolutely think its the most swinging hawaiian steel tune out there. I can't find anyone other than the great Sol that plays it. So lucky to have you and others to learn from. MT

man. exquisite. im a drummer a synthesist looking for an instrument to play around the campfire. you think think this would sound all right occasionally unplugged, or do i have to go for a hollow body?

Mahalo ! For the campfire I would definitely recommend a resonator steel guitar like a Dobro or Tricone. I love the simplicity of that setup.

@@HawaiianSteelGuitar I will look into those more closely! I do a lot of backpacking so weight is a consideration but maybe i can find something that fits the bill. Thanks!
@stanthesteelguitarman82283 жыл бұрын
Sebastian, listening to this makes me now assume that Dick McIntire also played "Hilo March" in A maj. high bass tuning, though he was not apparently normally associated with this tuning? Your version is to my mind just as good if not better!. A very amusing addition, in running out of keyboard at the end! So much enjoyed, as always.
@HawaiianSteelGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stan, thank you for your kind words ! Most probably he used C#min for this track, doesn't make a big difference since most work is done on the upper 2 strings. It is actually a bit easier to play in A I would say.
@stanthesteelguitarman82283 жыл бұрын
Hi Sebastian. Thanks for your helpful reply. I had previously tended to think that Dick McIntire played "Hilo March" in E maj. tuning! I've attempted to play it in various tunings over the years and, like you, find the good old A maj. is best. There was also a nice traditional style recording by the New Zealand group Bill Sevesi and His Islanders, featuring Trevor Edmondson on steel guitar [circa 1960]. [I think it's on You Tube]. @@HawaiianSteelGuitar

Great video! I already play C6th lap steel and Open G dobro and was thinking about getting a steel guitar for Open A tuning, but I can't seem to find any strings for this tuning, so I was wondering what strings you use? Also, the guitar I'm looking at has a scale length of 23.5" if that helps. Thanks!
