That is because the average citizen of Oakland is the one bringing awareness of the problems that occur every day. Look at where the Mayor lives for instance: Off of Skyline Blvd, up in the Hills. So yes, Oakland is still beautiful in its landmarks and scenery, but unfortunately the leverage is in the hands of those citizens and elected officials who live afar from where a lot of the problems are happening, and it creates this, "problem, what problems..................there is nothing to see here", mindset.

My preference: Be honest, don't be a hypocrite talking a good game about the poor or crime when your policies are self-destructive for the city and preserve your job.

I know the hotel business very well. Everyone knows about the crimes and inflation but what most people don't know is many insurance carriers will stop (or have already stopped) doing business with hotels/motels in the state of California before the end of this year. In order for this Hilton to continue to break even at a minimum, it would have to raise ADR by a good amount and that will just fail miserable since not a lot of people even want to go to Oakland anymore. Expect more hotels to close in the next few months.

It’s very sad. When I was a kid in the 1970s we would drive to Children’s Fairyland in Oakland. We went to A’s games where there were so many fans the upper deck was open. I went to Warrior, A’s, and Raider games in my 20s. Going to and from freeway to the coliseum and vice versa started getting sketchy. As a SWF going to games to meet up with friends I had my side mirror broken because I wouldn’t give someone cash or roll down my window. You’re stuck in traffic and can’t get away. Now that I moved out of the Bay Area I rather fly into SFO or Sacramento than Oakland. Without businesses where is Oakland going to get revenue? So many people on benefits there.

I don't know what the answer is. All I know is that the people won't be able to lift themselves out of their dire situation. They need someone to lead them and it's not going to be someone from the community. They will have to learn to trust an outsider to show them the way starting with parenting. If they can't do this, they will just have to live in the cesspool that they've created for themselves.

Our plane had engine problems and had to land in Oakland. They put is up in a Oakland hotel maybe this one. I asked the front desk if I could walk a couple blocks to get dinner. She was pretty clear that she would not advise it. What a pit of a city.

While crime is a major issue, I am disappointed that the article did not mention the loss of the Warriors, Raiders and A's as contributing factors in the decline in hotel demand in the area. I'm sure many out of town visitors attending a game used to stay there and are no longer doing so.

Going to miss that hotel. My mother used to work at the gift shop at that hotel back in the late 80's. When the opponents of the A's and Warriors came into town (Raiders were in LA at that time), they always stayed there, and were nice enough to give my mother autographs for me when I was younger. I have an Oakland A's banner autographed with teammates from the 88, 89, and 90's teams, along with photograph from Magic Johnson. So yes, that hotel was thriving, and in the early 2000's across the street, there actually was a club called the Ibaza. But thanks for the memories, Hilton.

My employee parking lot is next to the airport car rental and there a place in the back where they do the window repair. I asked the guy why are there so many cars with broken windows? He said it's mostly because they don't listen and leave stuff in their car. I said where are they mostly fromvand he said mainly SF and Oakland.

When I work for Uber during a short period before the pandemic Hegenberger Road was always the default route when going to and from the airport. I picked my mother up from the airport a couple months ago and Hegenberger Road wasn't even a suggested option in the Google Maps GPS. Even the AI knows it.
