Awesome to see, my 1kz surf i put the 10 blade fan on, and it has made a difference, although I don't have an aftermarket temp gauge, I did modify the factory one to respond to all temperature changes, it roughly sits around the 90° mark on hotter days 35+ ambient, I feel it can be better just not certain how I can improve it though

Hey Carl, Done a lot of testing on these . From my investigations you need a viscous with a good shroud. on the rear . But on the front you need a really good set of pusher fans also with a shroud if possible . This was mostly tested in deep sand full to 3/4 throttle.

Great detailed video! I am in Canada and getting my Hilux ready for a trip to Costa Rica in October. I have been concerned of the cooling and am going with the Champion 3 bank rad with a 10” fan after topping off the viscus hub. Hearing the results of your test, I think I am on the right track. Will install an EGT ahead of the blower as you suggested along with the water temp gauge, after that piece of info stating the temp on a factory gauge doesn’t climb until 110c is reached😮. Thanks again!

If you're having cooling issues on the road, what is it going to be like when you're having multiple attempts on a big out hill climb in the bush or pushing through South Australian sand with no option but using full power to get through on a 20km soft section. Seems like there's issues with the tune also running the heater is a good trick to manage temperature if it starts getting hot.

Great detailed video mate. I'm going through the same thing on a J90 Prado with a 3UZ 6 speed Auto, no room for a viscus. I think the main thing with thermos is they need space in the engine bay to let the heat escape. Going to see if EL/AU dual thermos will fit.
@boostedbuiltgarage

Yeah, Space is one thing, but to be honest they just cannot flow the amount of air needed. Although a 3uz has plenty of torque and is alot more efficient than the old 2lte, so you're already on a winner there. Albeit bigger engine requiring more cooling haha.

Glad to see the 10 blade does that much better. About to do this upgrade on my Prado and get some fresh silicone oil in the hub. I go out to the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico and Colorado, as well as a canyon near where I live where the descent into it requires 4L and L gear both up and down. Have been nervous about going out in the Prado because I just got done replacing the head and turbo a few months ago and I'm anxious about taking it offroad again since that

I'd suggest upgrading the front A/C fan to a higher output one with an external 'switch' for when 4WDing or idling after a big run. You could probably fit 2x the same size side by side if you really wanted to. Another option would be to modify the AC condenser to be underslung (late model KZN130s came like that), thus eliminating the extra thermal load in front of the radiator.. But this would not be something I'd recommend for someone taking their Surf offroad...
@boostedbuiltgarage
@boostedbuiltgarage 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have any space for pusher fan due to the tight packaging at the front with my w2a radiator. Would of been the first thing I did if I could fit. And also looked at moving condenser to aid in w2a fitment but was just no option and like you said, definitely not good to have anything low and in harm's way...

Top vid man 👍 it’s funny given your original driver to try the thermo fan was idle and high load. Thank you so much for your videos and information mate, I'm from Paraguay and I have a 94 4 runner 3l engine wich I turbinated with the shitty ct20. Our normal temperatures in summer goes from 38 up to 45 degrees Celsius and we use ac all day everyday. First was first, I couldn't drive the truck over 100kmh with AC on, put an handmade Aluminium radiator with 1.5litres more capacity in it, it got a little better, second I intercooled the truck (air to air), got much better, third I fit an oil cooler with a sandwich oil plate and mounted it to the front of my bumper, it helped too but still I can't manage to drive it for long distances over 120kmh with AC on and over 35 degrees Celsius, I was thinking about an electric fan because the engine overheated at idle in city use with AC on (talking about 40 degrees or more) and the ventilator didn't blow enough air throw the radiator at idle and the water flow is actually too low to. I'll try the 10 blades fan as you did and I'll be thinking about "smallering" the water pump pulley in order to get more and faster Watter flow through the engine at idle.

A higher pressure radiator cap won't help the efficiency of the system. Only raises the boiling point. I've never boiled the coolant or had a problem with that, just trying to make it the best possible I guess. You probably already have a 10 blade fan being kzn165 though?

Fantastic review mate , well done . Cooling is a very interesting topic - I too am in 3 minds in which direction to head next .. I’m in a 105series LC with a turbo charged 1-FZFE engine with 18psi boost. I too have elevated temps at idle with my standard vicious hub & blade ( Bull bar , FMIC , Oil cooler, Winch, Light bars all don’t really help the air flow when stationary .. ha ha ) I have contemplated dual thermos out of a XR6 / XR8 which I could make fit .. also bonnet vents & reverse bonnet scope to try and expel under bonnet temps when stationary .. I like the idea of the 1KZ fan blade … So my question is .. Did you have to modify the 1KZ fan blade bold hole centres to fit the 80 / 105 series vicious hub bolt holes .. or was it a direct fit ? Thanks again for the vid !

Try a koyo stock radiator mate you’ll be surprised, the heat soak in thicker radiators make it harder to cool as there’s more mass, versus a thinner radiator that dissipates heat quicker and easier, I had a 1kzte hilux and had big issues with cooling when I went bigger tyres fully loaded, tried a thicker radiator and I had even more issues, went and got a new koyo factory replacement radiator and it turns out my initial radiator that was in from new just had a build up of crap making it inefficient to begin with.. just a thought mate, I now have a 80 series with a 1HDFT that’s running a decent wack of boost and power and I had the exact same results, thinner radiator was better
@thomasbernardoni981
@thomasbernardoni981 4 жыл бұрын
Or you didn't have enough fan power. A thinner radiator has less mass - will dissipate heat quicker but will also absorb heat quicker. Meaning, up mooney mooney, you'll be stuffed. 80 series radiator is almost 3x bigger than a Hilux radiator of the same vintage, in terms of length and height. Not to mention, you can easily fit a 4 core. Engine capacity is only 1.5 times the size in comparison. An 80 with a 1HDFT was designed for AU, a Surf 1KZ was designed for a much colder (and less 4wd modification prone) Japan.

@@thomasbernardoni981 I do agree with all of the above and that was the original reason why I thought upgrading was the right choice, but those were just my experiences, I wasn’t going to swap fans as I didn’t think I’d taken my build far enough to warrant it, but the 1kz fans do a decent job, I think there was a upgrade people had done with a Mitsubishi fan or something I can’t remember it was ages ago.. I just thought it was interesting that in both of my cars I had the same experience with thicker vs thinner, both had JRP digital gauges so I’d like to think my temps were quite accurate

@@boostedbuiltgarage there's always something to do. It may be high oil temperature that's driving high coolant temperature's. I have seen this plenty of times. Replacing an oil to water heat exchanger if your rig has one, with a "proper" oil cooler on a thermostat makes a massive difference to temperatures of both oil and coolant, and your engine will really appreciate it.

@@thomasbernardoni981 Thomas I understand what your saying but from my own tests, albeit on different engines, the removal of this heat exchanger on the oil and coolant circuits allows the 2 systems to operate independently. This means you can fit a suitably sized, thermostatically controlled oil cooler on the oil circuit, offloading that heat from the coolant circuit. This works well in hot climates, or where engines are thermally stressed, but not ideal in cold climates in commuter cars. Just a thought.
