Toyota is making its own customers fans of its competitors, by not releasing new model frequent enough, like the Hilux. Then their new models seem to always lag behind in innovation, or engine performance, compared to its competitors. An example is my uncle. He only bought Hiluxes for as long as I can remember. But when he wanted to replace his 4.5 year old Hilux, and looked at the current model (Hilux), he said, it was pretty much the same as his model. So he looked at the new Ranger, and ended up getting that. Now he loves the Ranger. He wouldn't have even considered anything but a Hilux if the new model was substantially updated and more innovative compared to the previous version. So Toyota made my uncle - a Toyota fanboy, a fan of the Ford Ranger.

A good review, Thank you. In regards the "dated" look I am of two minds. If you compare it to say the 2023 Ford Ranger Wildtrak. It is seriously dated. But, it is tried and true and it works. Can the same be said for the new ford ranger with its electrics and gear box? I am not so sure it can. With more electronics also means more than can break. The Hilux was never designed as a "yuppy" vehicle designed to be driven around town by someone who wants to look cool. It was designed to get down and dirty. Afterall if you are out seriously 4x4ing do you really need all the frills?? Are those "frills" nice? yes of course but they wont help you through mud or through a river crossing in fact in some cases they will hinder you. So with that in mind, should they "update" it with all the latest and greatest gadgets known to humankind? I am not so convinced. I would prefer a vehicle I know can take out into the sticks and not have to worry about some electronic part breaking down on me anyday. Reliability is the key and if they add in all the electronics will it be as reliable? To be honest I doubt it when you look at all the other vehicles. Would I like to see a V6 version? yes, I would.
