Your comment about the roller cover 'sounding sick' wrap it up nicely. Mine always sounds the same and we've had several issues with it in the 18 months. If they update the Rogue in the future, they need to seriously look at the roller cover or get rid of it altogether.

No, mine first failed a day or two after I picked it up and has failed three times since where it just stops working. Toyota have since replaced the motor. Touch wood, it is still working but still sounds and feels like it grinding it’s way closed and open. I’d never buy another Rogue unless they ditch this particular cover.

I have a new generation V6 RANGER and how nice it is, I still miss my sr5 hilux sometimes. the new ranger is packed with tech and tbh it annoys the crap out of me. My take on it is if you want a car that is simple and works, buy a hilux and if tech is your thing buy a ranger.

As long as your happy paying for more litres per 100km as Ranger V6 has shown - in fact in a number of KZbin videos the Ranger Raptor has been consuming well over 30 litres per 100km off-road so that’s a deal breaker for me - I have a Hilux 3 litre auto and consistently get around 10 litres per 100km on and off road which I’m happy with considering the high price of diesel now - yes Toyota had DPF issues but Ford are known to have reliability issues with engine and drive train but I’ll stay with my low-tech and very reliable 2010 Hilux.

I believe this is the test vehicle under neath for next generation. Toyota through history have normally made minor changes incrementally hence there previous reliability. The downside is most other top selling utes have a lot more for your money. On sales, if you take out mining and agriculture sales there behind Ranger. How is the track increase done, wider diff and wishbones with wheel offset or new cab. Appears to be just diff and wishbones?

It's the same for all utes, all vehicles too really. No talks about this but the y62 has issues regarding towing. Your GVM gets hammered above 2500kg. If you are towing 3.5t, you loose something like 420kg of your payload. Not 350kg like everything else.

Toyota Hilux is a proven platform. Other brands put it as their benchmark for their utes. But don't put too much hope if any new Hilux will come up with anything major soon because why need to change when its a winning formula? As for Ford Ranger they will be the ”dr jekyll and mr hyde” of the category. Why? Reliability and most importantly longevity especially with the new Ranger on the market.

Toyota is making its own customers fans of its competitors, by not releasing new model frequent enough, like the Hilux. Then their new models seem to always lag behind in innovation, or engine performance, compared to its competitors. An example is my uncle. He only bought Hiluxes for as long as I can remember. But when he wanted to replace his 4.5 year old Hilux, and looked at the current model (Hilux), he said, it was pretty much the same as his model. So he looked at the new Ranger, and ended up getting that. Now he loves the Ranger. He wouldn't have even considered anything but a Hilux if the new model was substantially updated and more innovative compared to the previous version. So Toyota made my uncle - a Toyota fanboy, a fan of the Ford Ranger.

A good review, Thank you. In regards the "dated" look I am of two minds. If you compare it to say the 2023 Ford Ranger Wildtrak. It is seriously dated. But, it is tried and true and it works. Can the same be said for the new ford ranger with its electrics and gear box? I am not so sure it can. With more electronics also means more than can break. The Hilux was never designed as a "yuppy" vehicle designed to be driven around town by someone who wants to look cool. It was designed to get down and dirty. Afterall if you are out seriously 4x4ing do you really need all the frills?? Are those "frills" nice? yes of course but they wont help you through mud or through a river crossing in fact in some cases they will hinder you. So with that in mind, should they "update" it with all the latest and greatest gadgets known to humankind? I am not so convinced. I would prefer a vehicle I know can take out into the sticks and not have to worry about some electronic part breaking down on me anyday. Reliability is the key and if they add in all the electronics will it be as reliable? To be honest I doubt it when you look at all the other vehicles. Would I like to see a V6 version? yes, I would.

Even the new Prado is STILL not available and no one can guarantee whether it will be next year (2023) or not. Wake up Toyota, you've been left for dust and can no longer rely on the "most reliable tag". That's fine for mining companies who want the most basic ute for driving on a minesite which never breaks down, but for families who buy utes as an all-round-vehicle....NO WAY JOSE would I throw money down the drain on the most out of date ute ever. Needs a Detuned 300 series v6 shoe horned into the Hilux otherwise the new Ranger and Amarock will eat it alive in SALES . I am a devoted Hilux N80 owner.

Honestly Toyota are super lame in the game of innovation and moving forward. No damped tailgate, outdated interior and some electrical problems already is not a good look. They really need to make some big changes to stay relevant and not rest on their laurels

Still below the competition. This is not Toyota my bread and butter of the range. Lower grade models should be upgrade before rogue. Intense back to back test against previous gen models from all makes, and new models. Let’s see how much better newer models!!

Toyota need to improve the Hilux significantly. This is hugely not an improvement since the made it wider with no technology updates. The Ford Ranger is surely better and has surpassed the Hilux as the best small ute in the market. If Toyota made a hybrid Hilux then Ford would lose a lot of sales. Surely looking forward towards the 2024 Hilux, but I would not wait and buy the Ranger instead.
