Sir, what I did on my Himalayan is that , before I changed the T stem bearing, I drilled a hole and welded a grease nipple on it and replaced the bearing . Then filled it with high quality grease and every month loose the t stem nut and pumped new grease and tighted the nut again.....by doing this for last 2years I have zero issues.old school style.

Great clip Martin , just bought new headset bearing kit for my xr 400 .going to fit tomorrow 👍 had them apart as bike handling went off a bit ! Changed the fork oil tonight earlier on , think it was original 2003 😁 black and smelling awful 😮 worth a check on your own id recommend.👍 great clips mate I really enjoy them .👍

Well done mate. I chickened out and got the dealer to put some aftermarket Japanese bearings in. Bike had only done 14,000km… it’s a late 21 BS4 model, apparently the original bearings weren’t conical so it’s looks like they have upgraded them in your model.

Yes mate iv seen flat bearings on forums etc conical bearings are going to be far superior. The new bearings so be fine for you now eh.

When they're gone you'll know all about it. It'll feel as if you're turning the bars round a thruppeny bit. Replaced a few over the years,simple enough to do with regular hand tools,there are specialised tools but unless you're doing bearings regularly you dont need them. Never seen blue bearing grease before. Castrol LM is good enough for me. My 2006 Bonnie with 26k miles on the original bearings is fine.

Aye a knew they weren't dead yet. I had a look more out of interest than anything else as historically the bearings are a known weak point on the himmi seems like re maybe sorted it out now. Same on the blue grease never seen that on bearings before but there you go lol.

@@WeeJaunt some owners have reported earlier failure due to lack of grease.. probably a good idea to do what you did, check them before there is a problem. 👍👍

The big 30mm nut on top of the headset do you know what it should be torqued to. Mine keeps working loose!! Check it again today! Cheers mate.

Hello mate torque settings can be hard to find for the bike. I will put a link below. Even still I'm mot sure the steering bolt torque. I went for the brother holding the handlebars whilst I yanked on the wrench method. Just check the threads aren't covered in grease. Recently did my Xt600e with 33 000 miles and they were fine but needed re-greasing,reckon it was the first new grease since it left the factory👌

Wow 33k Gerry that's good going. The Bearings are not too expensive but why change them if all they need is a bit of grease eh 👍

A very neglected part of maintenance imo same as swing arm. Probably through fear. Great simple instructional video, many thanks. I did them on my xmax250 christ was so much worse than this having to almost take front end off in plastics. They never go back the same (plastic)

Hello.. Any issue aligning the bottom fork clamp so the stops are in the correct position - ie to stop the top clamp hitting the tank on one side?? kind regards Murray from Oz

The bearings looked fine to me as well. I have replaced a few in my time, I need to put a front tyre on soon so will check mine while I am at it.

Cheers John. Aye av just ordered a new front tyre another mitas. I put a mitas e07 on the back to try it out im very happy for the price so im gonny put the same on the front. its not the best road tyre but great in the mud. The head bearing is a straight forward job takes an hour or so start to finish.

Hi , For a long time now the first thing i do to a new (old) bike is tap a hole in the steering tube and fit a grease nipple. That way you can pump the full tube with grease and top up at service intervals . Never had to strip or replace since

And what about the swarf from drilling/ tapping the hole for the grease nipple? Are you sure none will end up inside? 🤔

@@davebeef2001 That's a good question William. When I removed the head the entire inside of the stem was tacky as you would expect. I don't know how it can be drilled without leaving a mess where you don't want it.

@@WeeJaunt I suppose the time to fit a grease nipple would be when the yokes were removed so you could clean the steering head tube of any swarf before pumping it full.

I usually take out the head stem. swinging arm/ rear links/ wheel bearings/ axles and check for grease amount from new. So many Japanese bikes came with so little grease. Imagine my surprise when I found ball bearings in the head stem of my expensive Triumph Tiger 800. Possibly that is why Triumph says for light off road duty only!

Aye always a good idea to check them if you can. Ball bearings rattling around in a new bike is unacceptable lol

@@WeeJaunt No, I meant that Triumph designed an ADV bike and did not use roller bearings in the head stem. The ball bearings worked I guess, but no dirt capable bike I have ever owned had been fitted with ball bearings.

@@WeeJaunt Well I was, but can't for the life of me work out why they wanted to make the smooth triple feel like a lumpy twin! The company did fix most of my gripes on subsequent models 16-22, but the price is now beyond what i am prepared to pay for an ADV bike. I can afford it, but can't justify it to myself, let alone " her indoors"! I am back on my DRZ400 now and loving it.

The bottom one takes most of the forces so is most likely to wear first. Neither bearing rotates much, for long periods they don’t move at all when you are road riding so the most likely issues with them are corrosion or flattening. They won’t ever get hot or have risk of loosing tempering.

indeed Jack. The excuse with the himi bearing for a long time was jet washing around the lower t. Whilst that might have had an effect its more likely crap bearings and poor grease that was the main issue. Doing a bit of research it seems the original bearings were flat now they are installing conical so no doubt will be better.

Hi Kevin I just use a lithium based muti purpose grease. Iv got a bucket load of comma multi purpose so I just slap that on pretty much everything. It does the job. Probably buy something like red and tacky in the future. I'd never use anything with solids such as copper slip on an axle or bearing.

That's a real pity Adam. Not too bad here in the UK but like most things these days are getting more expensive. The main reason I do most of my own maintenance is to keep the costs down. Thanks for watching mate I really appreciate it.
