Royal Enfield Himalayan Coneset Bearing Change/Replacement DIY

So as I had mentioned in the last video, I was having some issues with the cone set. When I tried to adjust them, it had a mind of its own and I could feel that the bearings were dug into the race. So decided to open them with the idea that may be cleaning and re greasing might take care of things.
But unfortunately upon inspection as you would see in the vid, the lower race had serious pitting or was dug in thus creating issues while riding. Things happen, I hope this would have lasted longer but now was the time to change, so here is how I go about it. There are a lot of ways to go about it, and yes a hollow pipe would have certainly been handy, but I dont have it so this is how I go about it ;)

You have mad shade tree mechanics skills. There are special tools to pull/install those bearings but you show how to do it without them. Sockets that are of correct size can also be used to install/drive in races. Good job!

Very informative video for himalayan owners, i ve already done that diy in my home, as per my opinion also cutting with dremel is the best idea, ive cut that with dremel also, but it would be better if you cut the inner part of the bearing half and tap the cut mark with a chisel. it will brake easily. As seen in the video you have made a cut on the rod and the lower part of the t-stem also. But if you cut that inner part of the bearing half way from the upper side then the lower dust shield can be saved as I did. Apart from that superb video. Doing the job with shooting the video on one hand is very tough i know. if you are doing it diy than you can try zkl bearing next time, it is better than the stock one. Ofcourse it depends on the availabily. Keep posting more videos. Loving it.

i just brought one today 3000km on it and bearings are bad but i was aware of the isue i paid $2500 australian for the bike bargain they are $7500 new

Hey mate, been long 🙂 And yes you are correct. Now blame it on my OCD but what about the moisture that will be left in nooks and cracks. I mean, yes I can bake after it's in to make sure that there is no moisture. I am also aware that many manufacturers do this and do have the right equipment to make sure that it's all dry afterwards and since I don't have those🙃 I just can't bring myself to adopting this practice. OCD yes, and one day I will overcome it hopefully, but great tip no less, cheers🙂

If this is caused by ingress of water, you can buy neoprene velcro sealing covers top and bottom, used on mountain bikes. Will protect these areas.

Hey, yes these have earned a bad name. Though RE has made changed to top and bottom seal, but some water still finds its way in. Will look for those neoprene velcro sealing covers and see how things go, thanks for the tip, :) Cheers

Thanks mate :). And yes existing stock ones aren't as good as they should be. I have heard of some Japanese brand of much better quality. Not sure of the brand and where to buy them but will get back to you on that. Will certainly try them next time these need replacement. Cheers :)

Just an recommendation brother when change the next time use German made bearings replace the top cap with big silicon cap it increases the life of the bike... Because RE is just focusing to release new bike not to sorted the old issues...

Hey mate The one I am curently using came in the tool kit of the Honda CBR 250, The bike has been sold off but kept the tool kit. And have been using it on Yamaha's, KTM's, Bajaj's and now on RE Himalayan, both for Coneset adjustment as well as rear shock pre load adjustment. So, apologies mate, not using a specific size, just a universal one i guess Cheers :)

Have you thought about switching to a more premium bearing ? Some say skf bearings that are made for RE are lower quality to increase profits . , Same bearings bought aftermarket are heavier and last almost twice as long ( I Haven't got any solid proof yet ) And using heavy duty waterproof grease ? . I'm planning to get a pair of genuine NTN japanese bearings and marine grease.. Do u think the dust caps that come with bs4 will fit on bs3? .

Hey mate good to hear from you :) Yup have thought on that front indeed and have bought a Japanese brand bearing by name of SPF and sourced the waterproof grease too but not tried them yet. It might be some time before I change the bearings but they do appear to be better quality then SFK ones. Price for SPF was about 600. Ntn were about 1000 and SFK about 300. Next time the stock SFK ones conk off I will change to SPF and use waterproof grease. I think I should be able to check the grease on another bike so will update on the practicality based on that. Yes please send me a ping on insta and we will go from there ;)

Thanks mate The stock ones are from a reputed OEM called SKF, but still quality is questionable. One of the viewers has suggested OKS brand, and I am sure there are even more and better brands available, will do some research and keep you posted Cheers :)

You can get alternatives from NBC or SKF taperroller bearings if u know the inner diameter and outer diameter of the stock ones. RE is using low quality bearings

Bro its waste of time nd money replacing the same company bearing, I had the same problem, I did myself since my dad is an mechanic engineer..he helped me a lot, a lot of cheap parts are being used in Himalayan, everyone are having this fork bearing problem from bs3, bs4, waiting to hear on bs6, you could have got some imported bearings, like NTN bearings or Timcun, Koyo. They will sustain for at least 7 yrs

But I believe the stock ones are ok and can last for decent miles if regularly looked after. The one I had just changed were factory fitted, and were quite a shoddy job to my surprise. Hey mate Yes I have seen the same ones on Yamaha. I believe and I have seen single lock nut if adjusted properly adds to simplicity when it comes do DIY's. Plus for a manufacturer its is also a way to cut down cost. Maybe thats why Enfield has gone this way Cheers :)

If properly adjusted and greased on timely basis they should last 20-30 k kms But mine were not initially and suffered damage thus only lasted about 13000 I guess

@@leuheanrede sure.she has clocked 22500 km, 80% long highway rides. 4000 5000 km long rides kinda stuff. Contacted ASC, tgey are saying that the chassis can be replaced under goodwill warranty. Gave bike to asc on Sat. 15 days min to issue a new chassis and replace the damaged one. Let's see what happens.

Hey mate, I believe you mean waterproof grease, if so yes, I want to use it but unable to find anything locally, and imports are in the range of 4000 to 5000 INR. That's why I simply use all purpose grease and maintain and regrease periodically. All purpose grease does last fairly for about 8 to 10000 kms. But maybe in future is I get access to and afford to import waterproof grease, I will certainly like to try it out and maybe even do a comparison. Cheers :)

Nowhere to run to for a taper roller bearin puller coz I live in the middle of nowhere. 😁 shall buy or make one before I attempt this again. A solid 6 hour job. Maybe with practice and a puller can be faster. Regards The bad bearing was quite dangerous so Enfield ought to smarten up.
