I try to get to one of the most beautifully lakes in the Himalayas but get blocked, having to find another route I end up on a high pass in the fog and rain with very limited visibility where rivers of water start to form across the road.

The Himalayas are pretty newly formed mountain range compared to others.. And Indian tectonic plates still crushing in Eurasian plates landslides are pretty common. Roads need to be repaired after every season. After rainfall after Snowfall and constant landslides. While Constant threat from Chinese aggression, Roads are made and maintained by the Indian army wing (Border road organisation, the BRO) to maintain the supply chain. Their engineers build Tunnels, bridges, roads and are also ready to serve in the Army if needed. They are known as the most non corrupt government body in India as they build these things for the nation and for their safety too. They put their body on line to keep things going. ❤

@@freewayproject I remember doing a tramp to a lake up a mountain. I was standing in the lake, due to the wet feet I knew I was there, but still couldn't see it because of the cloud. My legs vanished at the knee. Great fun getting down the following day with gale force winds, hail and snow. Stripped off my wet weather gear and got my fiancée into it as she was a little hypothermic. You're probably getting slightly more aclimatised so maybe able to speak at the top. Definitely way loftier peaks than here.

Another lovely video - really enjoyed it. Thank you. We were in Ladakh last week & were caught by the same road closure on the road to Pangong. There is another road which runs from Khalsar towards Pangong along the other side of the Shyok Rover. It links to the Pangong road after about 20 miles. Its a much shorter route than Khardung La - Chang La, but with many miles of deep sand, so I suspect you may have made the right choice! My video series starts next Tuesday.

Thanks mate, it is always great to hear you enjoyed the episode. Some other people did mention there was another route on the other side but it did not show up on my map, also they said that there was no signs at the turn off so I would not have seen it. Now that you bring up the point of deep sand, yes I think the way I went was s good option. I'll have to check it out on Tuesday

Just before Khalsar there is a left turn to go to the left bank of the Shyok river, if you going from Nubra to Pangong, but yeah there is no road sign to indicate that lol..The road which you took is actually closed for repair. I did Ladakh last month. Subscribed to your channel 🙂

Mate, I just did Leh to Pangong via Changla and after a night at the lake I went to Hunder. I had fantastic weather all the way but it was cold at Pangong. I too found no roads from Durbuk towards Diskit. You must have done this route much earlier but it was a fantastic ride...

Awesome you got great weather, the landscape there is amazing. Apparently there is a track on the north side of the river (I was on the southern side) but it has 20km of deep sand, there is a small track off one of the bridges but there are no signs. I'll have to check it out next time. Thanks for watching.

Aah damn. You took a loooong way around. From Khalsar (the right you took after the plains which had ghe zip line), you should e taken a left. That would've put you on the opposite mountain to the one you took which led to a dead end. I can understand, proper signs are not available in ghe himalayas. But you got to do another pass. Ohh btw for anyone qhos reading this, never stay at the first set of cottages you see at the beginning of Pangong lakr. Go further to the villagea of Mann and Merak, which are much less populated and busy.

Another great video - thanks so much for sharing. Very much enjoy your low key scenic and informative approach. Curious how you got around navigation when your sim card from Delhi didnt work there - another simm card company? I really like to come from various videos and a lot from yours. I have thought about a 10 day trip via a company more or less going where you go - but as you mention in on one of the videos "you lose the freedom" and honestly im a solo guy, but just consider groups for the mechanic help, paperwork, maybe lodging - is it difficult to manage on own? - noting that everyone seems to ride the same bike and villages should be able to help on a mechanical issue if i just rent a bike - thoughts? recommendations? Been watching a video each night and look forward to it. Great work- Thank You!!

I use an app call GaiaGPS, which allows me to have the maps offline so i don't need a connection to be able to work out where I am. Ladakh is quite easy to navigate as there are not many option for roads. I did not find it difficult to manage traveling solo. as long as you have enough food and water for 3 days you can walk out of anywhere up there. I'd say if you had issue there would be a town within 1 days walk at worst 2. Every village will have someone who can help with any mechanic issues, nearly all village has someone who can sell you fuel. I asked about the I got the permit once there, the guy at the hotel in Leh helped. You can get accommodation anywhere there is a small village, next time I would take my tent and camp out in the mountains. If you like riding solo I'd do it, just ride within you riding ability and don't push it then way less chance of having issues. I hope that helps

Hey, I've been loving your content lately! I think you deserve way more subscribers and views. Here's a suggestion: take one of your Himalaya series video and use KZbin analytics to find the one with the most Indian viewers. Then, create a clickbait-style thumbnail with something like 'Is this really India?' or 'Foreigner visits majestic Indian Himalayas' and add the Indian flag to it. This might help your video go viral in India, Even though you won't get much CPV ad revenue from India, but the huge views and engagement could lead to brand endorsements and more opportunities

Those trucks that dump the black exhaust out the side also dump diesel and as it starts to rain it gets really slippery. That was my last off (on road .. off road doesn't count). I had my Mum on the back and she broke her wrist. Which was a bit of a pain for her, but didn't slow her down. On the road from Pang to Keylong I think (but it was 25 years ago now so I'm not sure). She just said "strap it up and I'll ride". Her hand never went back on straight, it was always about 1 cm displaced. She was so tough. She'd broken her other wrist in a separate event about a week earlier. (Got her foot caught in a luggage strap as she got off the bike and fell head first into a ditch). Both arms were black from fingertip to elbow. So tough.

Hi mate, a few people have already told me about the north east and how good it is. As I could only get a visa for one month I can only explore one small part of India, but there is so much more to explore so I'll be back again (probably several times) to explore other areas the north east being at the top of the list. Loving every episode. Been debating a trip up north but not sure whether to go on a group trip, for peace of mind, or solo, for freedom of choice of routes and pace. No mechanical knowledge, so tending to the group tour. Will you be posting an episode covering do's and don'ts, permits, insurance and gpx of your trup? Also, everone seems to do these trips on a Himalayan, would you say it is doable on a 125cc bike? So much easier to handle (and pick up) 😊. Keep the adventures going!!
@freewayproject
@freewayproject 4 ай бұрын
Hi Peter, I am going to do a video at the end of the series on doing the trip as a first timer to the area, what I learnt, things that might help etc.. I think most people use a Himalayan as they are reliable and there is always someone in every village that can fix them if needed. Also they have that low end torque. You'd be fine on a 125 but avoid anything too steep.
@MalHanson
@MalHanson 4 ай бұрын
Doing that trip on a 125 would make it even more of an adventure! It looks like you're never go fast anyway, and having something light would be good in some of the rougher stuff. You would probably want to make sure that the bike was fuel injected though, so you didn't have to muck about doing carb jetting at the bottom & top of the passes.
