The final push back to Leh was a strange feeling but it felt like the Himalayas didn’t want us to leave… landslide after landslide! This is part 8 in a multi part Himalayas riding the Royal Enfield Himalayan adventure motorcycle. As a team we were certainly starting to feel weary of the long 11+ hour days riding, basic sleeping and minimal washing so in some senses we felt ready to reach the end of the trip but with such incredible scenery, mind blowing views, epic roads/lack of roads and such reliable bikes...we also didn't want the trip to end!
The final day saw us heading south conquering our final pass Khardung at 17,982ft. It's mad to think that 10 days ago making 12,600ft in Leh had us breathless, and now we've been to 19,024ft on the worlds highest motorised road!
With 118km of terrain it was a day of tarmac as we got close to Leh. However the Himalayas were not going to let us have it easy on our last day! We must have encountered 5+ road blocks from landslides. At one in particular they were drilling and boring 2m holes into the towering rock face... quickly followed by stuffing some form of dynamite equivalent deep into the holes. We stood by our bikes watching and wondering if our life choices of being on this mountain side at this time was a wise one. Was there another way around? Thankfully the Indian army soldier informed us it was purely preparation for a 5pm blast. Sad we would miss the drama but rather relieved to not risk a live burial, we continued past.
A notable stop was at the Mid-way restaurant which boasted one of the most scenic toilets in the world! What a view, thankfully it was also one of the least smelly and had yummy food and lovely sweet milk masala tea. A blissful road size stop in the sun.
India it's been incredible. I hope you have enjoyed this series

Ladakh is getting extremely crowded thanks to the extensive network of roads being built. It is losing its charm as a place with scarce population. Plus I do not think this is good for the environment at all. Ladakh better impose a large entry tax for environmental damages caused. Something like the Bhutan model. North India is a massively populated place and the chances these mountain towns are going to get extremely crowded is very high. Eco-sensitive tourism is a must.

Yaa you're right but all these infrastructure are build for mainly defence purposes not only tourism... but yess govt should impose taxes here😊

I did my first trip in 2012 on my Royal Enfield Classic 500. My last time was two year back via Zanskar Valley - on the same bike and solo. This bought back some memories. Very fery few paved roads then and less crowded.

Must've been so amazing back in 2012. Of course lack of options also for stay and mechanics etc anywhere other than leh. If there was a time machine, id go back to the early 2000s and ride through ladakh.

New paved roads and tunnels are being constructed with defense and economy in mind, however they have a negative side effect: ecological damage due to *excessive tourism*.

@@amitkriit you can't have it both ways. Development and progress and economic prosperity and ecological damage go hand in hand. Not just in the mountains, everywhere. If social media goes away, 70% of tourism will drop.

A great conclusion to a terrific ride Vanessa. All of you back safe is of course the most important thing, Those Enfield's did the job asked of then and apart from one bolt that escaped all was good. As for the toilets, well I've seen (but not used) a few of the squat and release types in Europe although that was a few years ago. Your current adventure is a personal one that may take some time but we will still be here for for you, Mr Ruck and Fluffy AKA the wonderful Anika a great team. Just a thought have you thought about an "Anika's Assignments or Fluffy Fun", bike series while you are occupied with something else? Many thanks for sharing and take great care as always.

Um... Thank you, dear Vanessa. You've been to the Alps, the Carpathians and the Himalayas, moving from west to east. Where better? The Caucasus has been forgotten.
