As an absolute beginner on a budget, I must thank you for considering my demographic in continuing to use Himi when making your videos. There are a lot of videos that attempt to sway me away from even considering the Himi set, but I just can't stomach dropping so much money on artist-grade when I'm only just learning to sketch and paint gouache from scratch (and we all know how expensive groceries are rn). Seeing your videos and how beautiful they all are despite using consumer-grade, "inferior" paints, is hugely inspirational to even picking up a paintbrush. The YT'ers pushing everyone away can come off as a little pretentious in their opinions when beginners like myself have no or very little frame of reference, in my case, a cheap paint-by-numbers acrylic set from Shein that got me hooked on making this a new hobby. I don't want to get bogged down in paint, brushes, paper types, etc. I just want to paint. Let me paint and not feel bad that I'm not getting "the true experience", or even worse, "an inferior experience". Let me just paint and enjoy painting. Thanks for reading/skimming this wall of text, but most especially, thank you for your inspiration.

The reason they do that is because they know how horrible it is to fight with your art supplies, so you end up not "painting and enjoying painting" because you are fighting your supplies. I bought so much Himi paint and now it sits there because I can't stand the sticky feeling (dextrin binder). It would have been much more cost friendly if I would have bought artist grade paint from the start and saved myself the trouble and frustration. No one is trying to be snobby, but quality art supplies are more expensive for the reason that you are looking for, they let you paint just to paint because you don't have to worry about paint, brushes, paper. I have no issues with Himi gouache, I am glad it exists, I am so incredibly jealous of people that don't mind the texture and the fighting and whatever else and can create amazing and inspiring art with it. Himi gouache paints are truly a gift to the art community. You should 100% try them and I hope they work for you. However, don't get mad at people trying to save you from potentially quitting art out of frustration by steering you to quality supplies, especially those that have been around for hundreds of years - there is a reason they are still here.

Zinc white (or also known as Chinese white) is the most transparent white of them all, so it’s better for adding it as thin layers. Titanium white is the most opaque so when adding it to another color it will make it a much lighter value with just a little amount and also it’s perfect when we want to add a strong white on top of other colors *I know this because I came to the same question once I decided to buy individual gouache paints and came across the fact I really didn’t know if I’ll needed white (since I was used to watercolor where mostly I didn’t use white)so I made a research on whites and also how people use it in gouache (since it was my goal) and at the end I bought both, I hope everytime artists have any doubt they research, get knowledge and hopefully found something they can apply to their artistic path **Just saw your comments, I'm glad you all ^ㅅ^

It's not that she didn't know the difference between zinc and titanium white, it's that with this set _specifically_ there is no noticeable difference between the white paints given and perform exactly the same. One is not more transparent or opaque than the other.

I just went out on a limb and picked up a set of Himi gouache paints and some practice paper, just to try out the medium. I haven't painted since I was a kid and being in college money is tight, so I didn't want something super super expensive. College keeps me busy and life is harsh and demanding enough with work and family obligations, but I have found that art is always soothing for my weary soul. I do digital some and I draw all the time with pencil and ink, but there's just something so visceral and grounding about traditional painting... It's an inexpensive budget paint that will enable me to explore a medium I've never used before. I'm looking forward to it and I will be following your channel for tutorials and tips!

I dont own gouache paint, but i have been wanting to try it out for so long. Im not the best at regular watercolors. I only recently started watercoloring, but don't exactly enjoy it. Im thinking I may enjoy the more opaqueness of gouache more though! This has convinced me to give it a go, haha.
@bealago17222 жыл бұрын
The same happened for me. I'm really into alcohol markers and I thought watercolours would suit me. However, I'm enjoying the gouache technique a lot more. I feel like it's more intuitive to use than watercolor

Gouache totally made me fall in love with painting. I'm useless with watercolors and acrylic paint and the opacity of gouache is a game changer! I also love that it's water soluble, it makes things so much more simple and no dry paint goes to waste. Hope you got to try it out by now!

I personally enjoy watercolor more, BUT gouache helped me get ahold of watercolor easier, and painting with gouache is a lot more carefree and relaxing compared to watercolor.
@speshuul2 Жыл бұрын
Highly recommend! I love watercolours and I do paint with them as intended but I noticed I was also using a lot of watercolour paint to achieve a thicker more opaque paint for details etc. so I invested in some gouache and oml I love using both together. I tend to use watercolour for my backgrounds, colour blocking and starting the details and shading, but the gouache is so incredible for details and brighter bolder colours. It’s also great if you wanna do like a solid wall of colour? It’s like being able to paint with acrylic but still have total control over the thickness and opacity with the amount of water you use. Idk it’s hard to put into words, but like having both and using them together has changed the game for me!

I also tried reviving a Himi palette once and it was a lot of work that took some muscle to do with some colors. Because you see, letting it soak in water isn't enough, some paints I had to completely dump out on some acrylic glass and just move it and mix it with water using a palette knife to get everything as smooth and homogenous as possible. With some paints the binder is so strong the paint gets gummy and it becomes hard to mix and it takes a lot more effort. But it's super satisfying to look at the revived paints.

I purchased the little round containers you get in kits with acrylic paints, the ones that are in a strip together, from Michael's. I cut the up to separate them. I squeezed in my Holbein gouache to fill about a third of the way to see how quickly they dried out and if theu got moldy. I have been opening them up every few weeks for about 3 months and they are still moist. I keep them.in a tin container that held supplies from Jane Davenport and it's very lightweight to carry around. I get 21 containers on there and because each is individually sealed I just open the ones I need and I can use a pallet knife to scoop out what I want or dip the brush in directly.

I like to use them with plein air sessions at the beach and yes very heavy to carry around in your bag with everything, plus I've also had issues with sand flying into them! Had to clean them out, quite a bit... Luckily for me they were dried and sand was on top.. My HIMI set is usually quite dried out, which in this situation can be better! I've now reactivated them fully though, and since then gotten mold, so maybe I should of kept them dry!

good points about the himi gouache! i've been playing with mine for a few months now. for me, the biggest Con is the color is significantly different once it dries-maybe this is something that happens with other gouache brands as well? also rather than having the whole set open and exposed when i paint, i prefer scooping up some colors that i'll need on to a palette and mix from there (the goops on my palette dries fast but i'll just keep adding water). i'm always curious to hear how other people use their himi gouache though!
