Man, Rufus and Kenneth just knocked out of the park with this scene. Himmler, still attempting to sound like a strong and intimidating man, while he can barely breath without help, and Smith, slowly letting Himmler know how much he is disgusted by him before killing him is just phenomenal. I just wished the show could have kept this, but I guess once hit this high, you can only go down.

This scene made me almost sad to see Himmler go, as Kenneth always did a great job with him. And I agree he hit it out of the ballpark with this scene. Phenomenal actor, in that even with as vile a character as Himmler, Kenneth left me wanting more.
@johnnysalamicorp
@johnnysalamicorp 4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth's portrayal is great. Himmler wasn't a veteran of WWI like Goering and Hitler and they ridiculed him for it behind his back. He was a very insecure man, always trying to one up other party members. This scene shows how truly weak he was.

Himmler's uniform is really accurate. They did their homework. On his left breast pocket, you see four medals. The winged one is the Combined Pilots Observation Badge in Gold with Diamonds. This was a tacky honorary award given to Himmler by Goring. Rommel and Doenitz also received this medal but never wore it probably because it was tacky and not really a real award since it was just honorary, but Himmler was always keen to wear whatever medals he could get. He had an inferiority complex since he never actually saw front line service as a soldier during the Great War like most of the other high ranking Nazis. Of the other three medals on his left breast pocket, two are real the lower hanging one is not. It was probably just added to show Himmler's acquired more medals in the decades after the war. The one at the top is his Golden Nazi Party badge symbolizing his loyalty to the party. The Bade at equal height to the winged one is the SA Sports Badge, a very common award meaning he passed the SA's physical fitness test once. Though I highly doubt he could do it again at this age. In the buttonhole of his right breast pocket, you can see his red award known as the ribbon of the blood order. A rare Nazi medal only given to those who directly took part in the Nazi failed Beer Hall Putsche of 1923. When Hitler tried to stage a coup in Munic. Himmler was not a soldier and instead carried the flag during the putsch and this was probably the only time he ever heard a shot fired in anger. Above his left breast pocket, he wore many awards such as the Anschluss and Sudentenland ribbons for his part in helping orchestrate Germany acquiring those territories. The show has added a second row of medals probably to signify he's gained more over the decades. The only thing he's missing is his chevron he wore on his right arm. This chevron signified he was a member of the "old Fighters" who joined the party before Hitler took power in 1933. They probably removed it because a single chevron usually means someone is private in the military and they didn't want to confuse people with it. Other than that his uniform is spot on. Great attention to detail. Source: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYaumqydp6pkp6s Mark Felton, the channel in the link above, makes excellent history videos so you should defiantly check him out if you love or even like history

@@slighter The real Himmler had one row of medals above his left breast pocket while this one has two so they did add 5 or so medals above that and then an extra larger medal below his left breast pocket. You are probably right though he probably would have earned more for doing projects and stuff for Hitler and the party over the course the decades but it still shows attention to detail on their part.

I'm surprised there isn't a Himmler compilation of all his endless angry screaming and grumpiness yet. His role was perfect and it went exactly where it needed too, John truly hating him so much was played out so well. "A petty little tyrant, a mediocre man," he savagely ripped Himmler apart before he killed him. Much as I wish there was a Season 5 (and not that whole last episode) and John had reunited the USA and worked on returning it more to normal, his entire character arc goes from light to darker and darker to somewhat lighter to where it's kinda hard to hate him.

I don't think John was ever pure evil, he was lawful evil. Most of the bad he did was to protect his family. Remember in the Reich any punishment he got for disobedience or "treason" would be passed down to his wife and children. There was that Nazi general sent over from Germany that told him to bomb a city in Georgia to send a message. As soon as he left the room John told his officers to stand down the attack and said "we're not going to bomb our own cities". Another example is when he murdered that Nazi doctor who wanted to euthanize his son.

One of the tragic things about John Smith is he increasingly knows that he's evil and he's destroying himself from the inside out, but he's also really good at being a monster, and he seems to take a special delight in killing Nazis, even though he is one himself. As I watched the last season I got the feeling that he hated them for turning him into a monster, or it was his way of trying to kill the Nazi inside himself.

I remember thinking Smith was going to manipulate Himmler, who clearly saw something in Smith and really just wanted his adoration, nothing more. And it seemed that Smith was going to...but then he levelled the man. To his core. He loathes Himmler, and tells him to his face, sounding almost bored, as if confronting a lowly insect. And then he kills him personally with his own hands. It's the polar opposite of the glorious death and legacy Himmler no doubt wanted. And the whole time, Smith knew the larger plan he was a part of. It was a wonderful twist, and he gets to live another day. I loved it because I really didn't know how Smith was going to escape this time. But in the end, it was hollow, of course. Smith was deep, deep into his "cover" as a Nazi by this point, and steeped in their cynical, shallow philosophy. A moment not shown in this clip is when he stabs Hoover, who obviously deserves it. But then he twists the knife. And enjoys it. He's stared into the abyss too long. In the end, he knows.

The poetic justice of this scene was not lost on me. But I felt the final two episodes of the show were so silly. I have two major problems, how on earth would you manage to sneak a poison gas canister inside the reich chancellory building. And two, we are meant to believe that a kind of Anthony/octavian pact would be made between a true German and a man who basically runs a puppet state for the reich?! The show really lost me here...

Goertzmann had people in Himmler's security. He was the one who executed it all. As for why he did it with John, it doesn't make much sense. He became the Fuhrer but he probably won't last long. He needed some support and John was the most powerful person after the Fuhrer himself. He controlled North America after all.

"we are meant to believe that a kind of Anthony/octavian pact would be made between a true German and a man who basically runs a puppet state for the reich?!" Why not? The Nazis were never really a rational group of people. It could have been just another political ploy. Goertzmann could have been biding his time to retake north America. I was more reminded of the Roman Empire, which split into East and West when the whole empire became too unwieldy to manage with just one emperor. It seemed quite realistic to me.

I feel for John in this series he wanted to become Fuhrer so he family could be untouchable after the fact the reason why Helen and the kids defected become apparent. Eeryone in that so called meeting that was a witness had to die. Unfortunately he knew he couldn't just run off with his family and forget the whole thing happened. He and wife and kids would never be safe on the run but his family were no longer believers in the Reich. Tough choice for Smith but sad how he went out like that I've always believed their was a touch of humanity in him. My favourite scene in the series. He went all out in the episode. He had the balls to finally do what he needed for the safety of his family but it was too late by then

people think john is somehow redeeming himself in this scene, and returning america to the old way. but the show clearly shows that this america has become the standard, the old america is alien for the people living in america in this show. john himself sets up extermination camps to "clean" the neutral zone and the west coast. the reason why john hates himmler is because himmler is like stalin was to the communists, a person with inmense power, but also a person who easilly kills you and abuses his power at every turn thus making himself a threat and enemy to john and his family, the one who origionally planned the coup was not a power mongerer or "petty little tyrant" he had a vision of how he wanted the world to be but was ratted out and thus killed. in short, john feels threatend by himmler and hates him for it, while still being a nazi with no plans on redeeming himself, the show makes you think john still believes in the old ways of america, by the fact that he wishes to protect his family and play along in politics, but in reality this does not make him dispise nazism, and to get to the top you dont have to just play along, you actively have to push the party agenda before they even ask it, that is why he is in the powerful position that he is in, specifically because he isnt just playing along, he is a fanatical nazi.

Given enough time in that universe, North America under John Smith would have come to be the most powerful just as it is in our world (especially considering it comprised the whole of the hemisphere, speaking to Canada's mineral wealth as well, etc.) Goertzmann I suspect would come to regret his Alliance over the coming years and decades because John Smith was truly the embodiment of American Ambition combined Nazi ruthlessness.
