The guy playing Eichmann has no ear for languages at all. His German pronouciation is so atrocious it might be considered a weapon of mass destruction in some countries. Some of the other actors with German lines on that show did mediocre readings there too, but this guy's by far the worst offender. A 1990s kid's toy speech synthesizer would have done just about as well as him. Kenneth Tigar does a phenomenal job here; not only is he speaking German on a native-speaker level 98% of the time, he also know how to PERFORM in German. A terrific actor. The character of Smith was just perfect. Up until the very last episode, I was sure he would switch allegiances and try to save what was left in America. But nope, his character always operated out of self-interest, and even when he took down the Nazi leadership it was just so he could secure it for himself. Great show.

Same. I so hoped for Smith to now atleast try to reestablish the United States, but no. I can only hope now that Withcroft, with his symbolic discarding of the Hakenkreuz, now does that role of re-establishing the USA, and eventually remove all symbols of Nazism.
@wysoft Жыл бұрын
If you want my take, he was probably meant to, but the writing of the last season was... modified so to speak. The entire series seemed to be leading up to Smith's redemption arc, there were too many hints at it for it to not be the ultimate goal. Instead we get the BCR coming out of nowhere, who were never a part of the story at all until the last season, then suddenly becoming the main group driving the concern of both the Japanese and the Germans, instead of the simmering anti-Reich sentiment that was supposedly brewing in the former American military which this scene strongly hints at. The Jahr Null reforms were shown to be a bridge too far for many of Smith's American command, and it was at this point that what was left of the American military had come to the conclusion that it was time to act now or never, with the Reich going beyond simply wanting to subjugate America as a conquered nation, but now desiring to completely wipe out all records and symbols of American history and culture which had been allowed to remain up until this point. That was the whole point of showing Smith's shocked and saddened reaction to the Statue of Liberty being destroyed. It was supposed to be the turning point of Smith's character and the point in the story at which it became clear to him what needed to be done. It should have been Smith that ordered the attack on San Francisco to be called off, and it should have been Smith who ordered the American Reich military to reinstate the American colors and turn against the Germans. Then Smith could have gone out with a bang, eating his own bullet out of guilt for his crimes, just like he did in the finale, having restored independence to America and completing his arc. It would have been an ending deserving of the character.

@wysoft is 100% correct. If they had done another season like originally planned Smith would have had his redemption arc. But they had to cram so much into the last season it was a waste. At least the show went out with a bang and cliffhanger with this episode. I'm told there is some sort of horrible fan fiction episode that some people cobbled together as a crappy epilogue, but we all know the real ending was Smith dividing up the world. *maintains poker face and cries on the inside*

Do yourself a favor and compare this scene to 'The Wannsee Conference', either the German version from 1984 or the English remake, with Kenneth Branagh as Heydrich. The cadence, tempo, bureaucratic vocabulary and the ebb and flow of competing interests in the room stands way above the flow of molasses that passes for portentous dialogue here.
@PapagenoX092 жыл бұрын
I'm going to look up the German version (I'm thinking I might have already seen it but not sure). The one with Branagh and Tucci was amazing.
@ClausJesup Жыл бұрын
I second that. No Nazi movie has given me more terrors than the Kenneth Branagh movie. Just some people in a room most of them lawyers, discussing the technical details of mass murder. Pure evil. All of the participants of that conference were ordered to destroy their copy of the protocol but one didn't and his copy was found after the war. Otherwise we wouldn't even know about that whole atrocity.

There's now a new German film too which is also good but I prefer the old version precisely because it is less cinematic and feels more like a home movie which makes it all the more chilling
