Those kids sat in the audience doing their drawing 😂

I mean, it is a lot to ask for little kids to thoroughly enjoy a band concert at all let alone ol’ Pauly H

Unpopular opinion, I find this to be one of my favorite versions of the Hindemith Symphony. Lots of extremes that I don’t hear in many other performances, despite the “wind ensemble” size of the group.
@kendallperry92472 жыл бұрын
I agree. I really enjoyed some of the interpretations like the rubato on the last phrase of mvt. I. Also the big spicy chords sounded so cinematic! The only thing I would change is the woodwind chromatic sequence in the development of mvt.1, with the 2 short notes followed by a long note. The long note could've been hugged a little longer- we need the tone to resonate in that passage, so the note has better presence within it's background. Still a great performance tho :) Another great recording is Fennell and Eastman Band from 58. A very straight classical rendition, but fun and dramatic nonetheless!

This really shouldn't be an unpopular opinion. The clarity and musicianship is fantastic especially considering this isn't a professional ensemble. Jerry Junkin is also one of the foremost wind band conductors in the world.

Just fabulous instrumentation we can hear in a wind ensemble!

I love that the chord at 4:50 gets the kids in the audience to look up from their books 😂
My favorite performance/recording of this by far. Thank you for sharing this! ❤

@@theargonath7938 Maybe the small audience size, the fact that lights are on in the house, or the people in the audience reading?
@theargonath7938 Жыл бұрын
@brodieainsworth4901 the house lights aren't on. That's the stage lights hitting the first several rows. Also not a small audience. You cant see the back 90% of the hall. There are probably at least 500 to 600 people in attendance.

Very good...now learn to play demented and angry and the piece will start to live. Was a good job just far to polite for Hindemith.
@theargonath79382 жыл бұрын
Do you say this because it's a small ensemble? Do you think the brass need more edge to their tone when playing at fortissimo or louder? This is one of the more interesting and nuanced performances I've heard of this work. Perhaps it's the chamber music quality of the ensemble sound you are disappointed by? The attention to detail displayed here is exquisite.
@SFAJmz052 жыл бұрын
@@theargonath7938 There is a huge difference between an ensemble playing well together fundamentally and an ensemble that is mature enough to create well beyond just the notes on the page; one that sings, cries, loves, or rages with every note and silence. They are not playing in that space here; it feels much like a well played etude and not like the work of a master composer.
@theargonath79382 жыл бұрын
@@SFAJmz05 I have a number of years of classical playing experience myself and I respectfully disagree that this performance is lacking the musical expression in manner you describe, but to each their own.

@@theargonath7938 Awesome that you have experience 😀!! I too have many years of experience in the world or art music. This performance "sounds" good but doesn't make me feel anything because they aren't communicating anything in most parts of the piece; it needs to come to life.

Wind Ensemble not right. Needs Symphonic Band - 25 to 30 clarinets. It's a big piece. The best recording I ever heard of this was an old Seraphin recording. I don't remember the group. Would love to hear The President's Own (marine band) do this.
@theargonath79382 жыл бұрын
It's actually quite refreshing hearing it this way. The transparency really allows for the colors and counterpoint to come through. The piece really sparkles in this instrumental setting.
