D1 and Low gears are used only while coming downhill in climb automatic transmission takes care of gear with the input of accelerator staying in drive mode.coming downhill your feet is on brakes so you select mode D1 or low to keep your car under control in constant gear.

No, it is not hard. But if you press brake paddle multiple times without starting the car then it becomes hard
