Hinged Low Tunnel for raised Bed gardening

We have decided to build low tunnels over a couple of raised garden beds. The low tunnels will be hinged so we have easy access to the plants inside. The low tunnel will protect the plants at night from freezing temperatures like a miniature greenhouse. This will also protect the plants at night from getting eaten by the rabbits that run around our property. In the summer time I can undo the hinges remove the low tunnel. This should extend the garden season my a month in the early spring and a month in the late fall.

God job. I've decided to build the hoops as a solid glued line. I want to run water through them. In spring some over head to bring up seeds. Down below for later some other type that will water from under the plants. Haven't decided what yet. I haven't seen a vid yet that does that.

This is what 'Grocer's do'... grow 'Out of Season' goods to be able to sell 'fresh' produce all year round. The difference being 'Homesteaders' are primarily growing to feed their own families (more 'organically') but there are MANY Homesteaders who have 'Market Gardens' and sell their 'fresh' produce as well. They sell LOCALLY while the big guys SHIP their goods EVERYWHERE. We always start out saying, 'Oh we just wanna, we just wanna...!' But EVERYTHING GROWS! We will come to a point again where there are generations going to the grocery stores shopping for their meals... it's a 'repeated' cycle.

Since you aren't using expensive greenhouse plastic, why not just remove the plastic when the weather warms up and replace it with insect screening to help with pest control? Might be easier than removing the frame and get the bug control benefit too. Some veg will need pollinators for a time so that would need to be considered. Great job.

Awesome build... simple but effective. Keeping a can of “air in a can” in the shop is handy for blowing out sawdust from pockets and recesses and saves dragging out air lines for small jobs. Loved watching the dogs playing like a couple of rambunctious kids

Very nice! If your plastic doesnt hold up very well - real greenhouse plastic ist worth its money, it lasts for years through all weathers. We do have a similar low tunnel in our veggie garden here in northern Germany, but we wrapped that in a plastic with lots of holes (its called "Frühbeetfolie" here). Not that much protection for the plants, but a little more airflow, since it can get pretty hot in a lowtunnel. We do have another raised bed topped with a greenhouse-plastic-lid, but that one we fitted with an automatic greenhouse window opener, with is really handy. Greetings, and keep healthy!

The ridge pole is a great idea. My only suggestion is to leave the ribs a full 10'. The pvc and the plastic already come 10' stock and the extra air space will maintain its temp longer. If stability is a concern, you could use 1/2" metal conduit like I do for Wisconsin snow

Nice if you know how to actually construct something like that, I would not know where to start! I think a handle or two to help lift the tunnel would make it easier. And I would use a hook instead of chain, just to make it more stable. And... it would be good to be able to raise and keep open the tunnel just a little bit, to air it. Just suggesting. I am so curious what your job is if you feel like sharing it. or you might have mentioned it and I missed it. Best wishes

So why did you countersink the washer and bolt on the carriage bolt? Is that a 3/8" carriage bolt? Thank you for the informative video. I live in a windy area and that design with the carriage bolts will hold up better against the wind.

What going to prevent air from getting under the plastic and lifting hoops of if the bolts ?

James Tate the during strips that he screwed down on top of the plastic to hold it tight. His design is absolutely perfect! Give it a try just as he built it instead of looking for the negative points of everything and you may be surprised at how well something works! I have beds that I built a few years ago that are almost identical except Evan took it to the next level. Mine are not hinged do my plastic is attached the same as his on the backside but the front I only use 3 Home Depot spring clamps to hold the plastic to the hoops so wind could get under mine if it wanted to but never has and after two full years of use I have yet to lose the plastic or the hoops a single time yet so his will be there till a tornado comes. And I am in hurricane territory so it’s been thu extremely high winds and there’s not even a rip in the plastic yet. Go build one today just as Evan did and you will be impressed, I promise you!!
