As part of Hinze Dam's Stage 3 upgrade in 2011, a 'trap and haul' fish facility was built - the first of its kind in Australia.
The facility is located a few hundred metres downstream of the un-gated dam's spillway.
Fish migrate to complete their life cycles, but water-resource developments - like dams - disrupt river connectivity and migrations, threatening biological diversity and fisheries.
The fish and haul facility assists fish with migration upstream and sorts natural species from exotic ones.
This animation shows how the facility operates.
