When Dolly first came to Nashville, she joined the Porter Wagoner TV show because at that time Dolly was completely unknown and Porter was a well-established star in the world of country music, and he was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Dolly knew that joining his show would be a huge boost to her career, but she also knew that she did not want to be contractually bound to him indefinitely because she wanted to be free to do what she wanted to do so she promised him (and he agreed) that she would stay with him for five years. When the five years was up, Dolly had become a HUGE star and she had eclipsed Porter and he knew it. He knew that she was now the draw to the show, and even though he had promised to release her in five years, he did not want her to leave, and he was making it difficult for her to go out on her own. They had been somewhat arguing about this and Dolly knew that Porter was not hearing a word she said so she went home and wrote "I Will Always Love You" because it was her way of telling him that while she thought a lot of him and while she wished him well, it was time for her to go. PERIOD. When she next saw him, she sang the song and he finally got it and reluctantly stopped fighting to try to make her stay.

@@rgjerde53 Of course, he ultimately sued her and put her into a bit of debt when his show wasn't going well, and he attacked her personally in the media. Her response, when he later fell on hard times and had to sell the rights to the music catalogue that constituted his life's work, was that she bought it, held it until he was out of trouble, and then gave it back to him. She went to his bedside and sang him this song before he died.

Whitney's version made me think ' Wow, what a singer'. Hearing Dolly sing it made me think Wow, what an incredible songwriter and storyteller who makes you believe every word'! The spoken lines in Dolly's performance carry more emotional weight for me than any of Whitney's runs or power belting.

I believe that Dolly took the royalty money she made from Whitney's version and invested it [ quietly without people knowing at the time ] into an African American community in Nashville to improve lives and education. She has done so many charitable acts that people do not realise - a truly remarkable woman.

A lot of people assume Whitney Houston's version is the original. But Dolly wrote this back in 1973. Like has been mentioned Dolly wrote it as a farewell to her business partner & mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her decision to pursue a solo career. Love Dolly's sweet version. Whitney made it into a powerhouse song.

An accomplished woman in so many ways. The Porter Waggoner show was syndicated when I was a kid. A weekly necessity just to listen to Dolly. Back in those days, a female singer wasn’t supposed to have as much talent and ambition as she did. She paved a path for others to follow.

Dolly sang it sweet and king. Whitney sang it with much more force. I love both versions. When asked if she was jealous Whitney received such great accolades from the song, Dolly said NO, Whitney made me very rich! Like a very few in this world, Dolly is a fabulous word smith and has proven that over and over again.

Actually, most people don't have a clue that Dolly wrote this song. It seemed to me that it was almost kept secret. I think Whitney's version stayed on top for a long time and they didn't want folks to know it was Country. Was quite a bias against country T the time by the hip people. I suspect Dolly laughed all the way to the bank

Dolly is a national treasure! She is such a good person, beyond her many talents of songwriting, singing, acting, etc. I will never forget how, when the Smoky Mountains burned down a lot of Gatlinburg a few years ago, she launched a fund that gave displaced families a monthly stipend to help them through it, and did so for I think about a year, to the tune of about $10 million of her own money as well as donations from outside sources.

It will always be Dolly for me. She has so so much you could play. What a treasure. Dolly is 86 now I think. Still married to Carl Dean. Renewed their vows at 55 years. He stays out of sight. DEFINITELY one of my very favorite songs performed by Dolly Parton. Classic LOVE Song. However, MY VERY VERY FAVORITE SONG performed by Dolly Parton is"My Coat of Many Colors" which is in reference to the Coat of Many Colors worn by Joseph, the son of Jacob and it's very similar to the story of The Coat of Many Colors in THE HOLY BIBLE in the Book of Genesis. They aren't a big name but have been with such artists as Bob Dylan and Levon Helm of The Band. .They are real, fun, and skilled. Anything they do will be good. A favorite of mine is "In the Attics of My Life" which they perform in perfect three part harmony with Amy Helm, Levon's daughter. Since I'm suggesting, I will add "Whispering Pines" by the band.As a bad guitarist I will not that it has thirteen, THIRTEEN chords. It is absolutely beautiful.
