I saw Don Williams in concert once. Ronnie Milsap was the act that performed first. Ronnie came out in a hot pink sequin jumpsuit,, got up on his piano and jumped off...(mind you Ronnie Milsap is blind). I know he paced the stage to know where everything was but he still made me nervous, although I enjoyed his music as well. When it was Don's turn to perform, he came out in his blue jeans, cowboy hat and boots, sat on a stool, playing his guitar and singing one song after another until he was through with his set. When he was through he thanked everybody for coming out, and that was it. Such a difference from one performer to the other.

Although he was a very popular country star in the 1970s and 1980s, Don Williams was one of the most successful country artists globally scoring hits in Canada, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. He even toured Zimbabwe in the late 1990s and was very popular there. Check out the KZbin videos highlighting his African performances later in his career. Roger Cooke actually wrote this song and one of the lines was originally the rising cost of getting high. Don said if you'll let me change that line then I'll record it and it became the rising cost of getting by instead. I think his voice makes everyone smile. It's very calming and soothing. Add that to his laid back, soft spoken personality and it doesn't matter how bad a day I've had, I can put on some Don Williams and I feel like everything is gonna be OK. Maybe next you could do, We've Got Got a Good Fire Going, You're My Best Friend, or Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good. He was a very humble and genuine person and it comes across in his music.
