Marty Robbins career spanned nearly 5 decades from the late 40's to early 80's. In the 50's he had hits "Singing the Blues", "A White Sport Coat & A Pink Carnation" & "The Story of My Life". His signature song was "El Paso" in 1959 which started the western ballads he was most famous for. Robbins recorded more than 500 songs & 60 albums & won two Grammy Awards among other honors. His songs were covered by many other famous artists, including Johnny Cash, the Grateful Dead & Elvis Presley. Truly a legend.

I wonder what Marty woud think of what's going on with Big Iron and the video game. There are all kinds of parodies out there, and knowing Marty's sense of humor, I'll bet he would have written his own parody.

This song gives me the chills. To me it is the best of trilogy. The last line shakes me up. I love the idea that narrator believes, deep down, that the cycle might start over if he ever sets foot back in El Paso.

I am somehow 68 years old (although I don't look it, ask ANYONE :P) and I remember riding in my parent's '57 NASH Ambasadore to one of the first ''mega-stores'' U-SAVE on 42nd Ave., in San Mateo, CA where my father bought Marty's ''Gunfighter Ballads'' and ''More Gunfighter Ballads.'' My father took meticulous care of his records and I still have them. Marty was his own genre. Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline . . . what a time! :)

What a coincidence that you should react to this. We took a vacation recently and visited our daughter in El Paso. We lunched at Rosa's Cantina one day. The bathrooms were spectacular! My husband had to take a pic of the urinals (beer kegs). I bought a t-shirt as a remembrance. Marty Robbins final film appearance was with Clint Eastwood in the movie "Honkytonk Man". In the film, Clint plays a Jimmie Rodgers-like character who's dying of TB as he struggles for musical success. Marty Robbins plays the singer who takes over for Clint when Clint can't finish a song in the recording studio. This is ironic, because at the time it was Marty Robbins who was very ill.

3 songs about a decade between them telling a love story about a cowboy and a girl. 1950s,1960s,late 1970s. Then a decade or little more later Songwriters: E. Setser / T. Seals writes 7 Spanish Angels. Willie Nelson and Ray Chatles record it and it's a mega smash hit. The story is about a cowboy and a girl dieing together for love. It's my opinion the writers may have been influenced by the original El Paso, but then again the story's old as time.

"El Paso City" is kind of breaking the 4th wall, where Marty sings about himself as the singer of the song about a gunslinger, rather than the gunslinger, himself. Marty had done and achieved so much by this point, and the lyrics of this song are so clever that we're willing to let Marty toot his own horn while engaging in a bit of false modesty and pretending that he doesn't know who the original singer was.
@DjPjrocReacts9112 жыл бұрын
