I always interpreted it as it’s the cowboy’s spirit in heaven looking down on El Paso and getting the feeling his former life was the cowboy that died in the desert sand so long ago,I grew up with my dad always playing Marty Robbins, I’m 40 and his songs are still just as powerful to me as it’s my first time, I enjoy watching peoples reaction videos first time hearing Marty Robbins songs

Have you ever seen Merle Haggard's impressions? He does AMAZING impressions of other singers and he was really big into Marty Robbins when he first started and does his impression perfectly. It's really something.

Love the reaction. This one is about re-incarnation. Some other great Marty Robbins songs you might like are "Mr Shorty", "Big Iron", "The Master's Call", "Devil Women" and "My Women, My Women, My Wife".

Marty knows how to tell a great story. Like everyone else "Big Iron" & "My woman, my woman, my wife" are wonderful story songs. But if you also want chills(goosebumps all over your skin) listen to, "The Chair" by Marty. It doesn't matter how many times l listen to that song. Even after 51 yrs l still get chills! I think l'll go & listen to him sing it. Todays Country radio doesn't have room to play the Legends of real Country Music. They have decided nobody wants to hear any of the older stuff. Us older folks don't matter to them. So glad you enjoyed El Paso City like the rest of us did the 1st time we heard it!

Marty Robbins grandfather was a real Texas Ranger. That's where he got the inspiration for alot of his songs from .

I am old enough to remember these 3 songs, but I admit that I never put them together. Good job. El Paso City drifts closr to the metaphysical.

I read somewhere that Marty was working on a fourth installment when he passed away. I wish I could have heard that! Maybe he would have went back to see... could have been a very intriguing storyline.

At her request, I sang El Paso City at my Mother's memorial service. Marty Robbins could sing any song in any genre. If you're new to Marty Robbins...check out Devil Woman & Tonight, Carmen.

... Also a movie by the same name, staring Marty. It's kind of interesting because there is a hitch in the timeline. This song, and movie, were written before Marty wrote Feleena. She is in this movie, not as the love interest, but a side character. There is one scene where she tells a story from her past that recounts the song El Paso (without naming names). However, once Marty wrote Feleena, she would not have been alive to tell that story as she died 20 - 30 seconds after he did.

@@jamesdemarco7161 A movie huh??? Holy cow Marty was an actor too!!! (I just looked it up) I definitely got to check it out, thank you for letting me, man I am just falling down this Marty Robbins rabbit hole 😂
@jamesdemarco71612 жыл бұрын
Just went and watched that scene again. I threw a little disinformation in my last post. The movie is actually called "Ballad of a Gunfighter". I also picked up a little side note I hadn't noticed before. Just before Feleena tells the story, the melody of El Paso starts playing softly in the background.

@@jamesdemarco7161 My father took me to see "Ballad of a Gunfighter" at the town movie theatre when it came out. I thought it was great. Many, many years later I found a copy of it on VHS. Not so great.

@@shay8178 He has a small part in Clint Eastwood's movie "Honkytonk Man". Clint plays a depression era country singer with tuberculosis. Marty plays Smokey, a back-up singer when Clint's character is recording the song "Honkytonk Man" in the movie. A short time before the movie was released, Marty died. Very unfortunate. But good song. You might want to look it up, too. You can find the movie clip on youtube or the version with Marty singing it by himself

If this song was a video. At the end of the song. I always imagined the parting shot would be the camera pulling bact to reveal. A modern day felina reaching for his hands giving him a kiss and her putting her head on his shoulder. While over the intercom, the Plane Captian saying. Welcome to El Paso, we will be landing shortly and the rest of the announcement fading away. Then fade to black. Now you know the story. Semper Fi

Try 'Cottonwood Tree', 'Billy Venero', 'Ghost Train', 'They're Hanging Me Tonight', 'Jimmy Martinez', 'Ride Cowboy Ride', 'She Was Young And She Was Pretty' and 'The Master's Call.' These are some of his greatest western sagas, but Marty could switch to any genre, such was his vocal versatility and talent for songwriting.
