@@hifijohn Perhaps rock fans should listen to more hip hop ? It's not my favourite genre, but even for me, it has its moments. I can play rock ( not making any big claims tho ), but I'd get slaughtered if I ever tried battling lines with some bar-spitting hip hop master. And I couldn't tell you what tech they're using, even though I use plenty of it myself in home recording. Not only that, but as soon as you step away from the standard instruments of modern popular music most people will struggle to identify them sooner or later. I sometimes play a cuatro de Puerto Rico... I quite often play a repenique... I very often play a bodhran. I don't expect people to pass a test on what instrument I just played. It is neither a competition nor is it an exam. And you have now met a rock fan who has been impressed by hip hop, qawwali, rebetika, kwela and forro, to name but a few. Raise your aim. Raise your game, Sir.

There is a difference between covering and sampling. sampling is playing a recording of someone else playing. Covering, or "nicking" bits of melodic theme and then PHYSICALLY playing it yourself is still being a musician. Instead of copying and pasting parts into a drum track, and auto tuning yourself over it to keep yourself in tune, you actually pick up an instrument and play something, even if it sounds a lot like something else. All music is derived from it's roots, but only recently do they take chunks of other's art and put their name on it.

Zeppelin added their own sound and power to many classic blues tracks, they played the instruments, did the arrangements, sang. Taking something great and in many ways making it greater. Big difference between that and "sampling" a song.

My favorite part of Robert's voice is his lower register. So beautiful. It's all the more resonant when he comes down from his higher range to his lower range and also with Jimmy mimicking his voice on the guitar. I've listened to him for 50 years, he's often sung me to sleep. So beautiful. The confluence between Jimmy and Robert is magic. Robert is still gifting us with his voice today!

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is an old, old traditional song that had been done by many artists over the years, such as Joan Baez. Led Zeppelin were unique in that they combined the quiet and the loud in this song perfectly.

If you listen to the original songs that Zep allegedly plagiarized, they are absolutely nothing like the Zeppelin numbers , Zep took some basic framework or pieces of lyrics to create new music that the original musicians couldn’t ever come close to playing and that sound nothing like the original.

There’s plenty of old songs that nobody knows who wrote them or where the phrases came from. There wasn’t much copyright stuff going on. And many guys who claim to have written songs also took lots of the music from someone else.So if they said squeeze my lemon , they have to credit the guy who invented the saying?

My take on rappers sampling old songs is that the creators of all those sampled songs did all the heavy lifting. They spent years learning to play their instruments, they also created something from nothing, which is huge. Rappers simply add their two cents on top of all that hard work. It is true that in the right hands, the new song can be transcendent. Also remember that Led Zeppelin wrote a vast majority of their music, and that reworking an old song is the exception.

For me, music is all about melody. Creating a melody from nothing is the craft. Then interweaving the sounds of various instruments & vocals with percussion to create a finished thing of beauty. This where hip-hop falls short. Just pounding beats, heavy bass and loud talking with attitude. No melody. Pasting a sampled sound may add a little sweetness, but it’s more of an afterthought, and not creative at all. For this reason alone, I have no attraction to this type of music. It all sounds too much the same, is not creative, and generally speaking, not good to my ear. My 2 cents.

Bear in mind Plant had JUST had his 20th birthday when this was recorded. He was still learning. His power at this point was legendary. At one show maybe a month or two after this was recorded the vocal PA system failed and they kept going. Plant could still be heard at the back of the room over the rest of the band. Bonham was also 20 years old. Think about that...

@@SyedRewinds Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is a masterpiece. Even Bob himself changed his live performances of the song to try and sound like Jimi's version. Elvis Presley's 1970 live performance of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is another cover that dwarfs the original.

This is my absolute favorite Led Zeppelin song and that's saying a lot because I have so many. Everybody in that band was beyond insanely talented. Everybody. And the way that they came together as a tight band is just mind blowing. But I'd love to hear this early stuff for sure. I swear to God I got goosebumps every time I hear this song.

Plant's voice this early was more raw, and maybe a bit more powerful. But all the way through Zofo, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti his voice was getting more refined. He could do more with it and it was more mature. After that his voice did deteriorated a little, but still great. And of course you have to remember he was 19 when he joined LZ. The voice continues to evolve through the years.

@@Nichwar19 I think maybe you are misreading me. Just to be clear, Plant's voice on ALL of LZ's albums is killer. Even his worst song during those years was a better rock and blues voice than almost anyone around. But it did absolutely evolve over the years - both from natural evolution and probably from abuse too - just facts. Now in later years, as he has gotten older, his voice is much weaker, naturally as it would with most singers as they get older. But his experience and knowledge of music is so vast that he produces good music.

I’m with you. But I think there’s a big difference between a hip hop song sampling a hook, putting a digital drum beat behind it and rapping three verses over it. Hip hop, which I love, for the most part is great when the lyrics and flow is great. And in this day and age, it’s pretty much impossible to make original music so I have no problem with rappers sampling older music. But, zeppelin doing a cover is great because of the musicianship. They’re actually playing instruments masterfully and really doing a totally different take on the songs. And the appeal of the singing isn’t the words, it’s the voice. Which is why I have no problem with zeppelin stealing lyrics because I’m not listening to the lyrics, it’s all about the singing. So I have no problem with sampling either way. But in terms of music, I think zeppelin is god tier. Not just better than rap but better than everyone except like Beethoven and chopin

great comment Jackie. Cant argue with any of it, especially as its just your preference. Personally rhythm and syncopation is huge for me, it speaks to me in a way that the voice can't. For example the "stampede of percussion" with those amazing taiko drums at the end of Love lockdown, is for me, more impactful than what most singers can do. It all just depends on what speaks to you. Again if its simply a thing of preference, I totally understand. Some music speaks to people more than other genres however, what I think is hypocritical is some of the listeners who say one steals and the other doesn't. Also to speak on the musicianship argument, this may be because you haven't heard the right kind of production in Hip Hop. Take J Dilla, he is a composer. All he needs is one machine and he can take tiny snippets of other tracks and transforms them into something wholly different. That's musicianship to its fullest! He literally converts old ideas to something totally different. Also, a lot of black artists who were around during the beginnings of hip hop didn't have the luxury of being musicians. However, with one piece of technology (a sampling kit like the MPC) they can create new compositions without having to work with a team of musicians. Plant's voice is hypnotizing. The guitar from the great Jimmy Page, the power of the best drummer in the History of Rock and Roll, the late Great John Bonham and the base,keyboard, and the organ from the talented John Paul Jones. They have it all!!! They work with each other and they work off of each other. They are so much in sync with each other it's just mind blowing!!!! Just a thought... Covering a song Vs Sampling: Covering a song involves, dissecting the musical arrangement. Learning all the parts, and being able to play them in an interpretative way... Usually, some level of instrumental proficiency is required in order to capture the essence of the work that is being covered. For example. If you where to preform a piano cover of this song... You must first be able to play the piano, then, learn the chord changes as well as the rhythm pattern you plan to incorporate into your version of the song. Sampling involves copy and paste techniques in which a riff or passage is digitally copied and inserted into a pre-existing beat, or loop... Or... A loop or beat can be derived from said sample and used to construct an interpretation of the song. No instrumental proficiency is needed, just an understanding of the software and techniques utilized in creating this type of music. I understand that both approaches require a measure of talent, yet, I don't believe that you can correlate them and say that there is no difference between covering a song and sampling it... When you do a react to “the rain song” by Led Zeppelin I’ll gladly subscribe. So many great songs (literally GREAT songs) in their entire catalog. I call this one, “The All-Timer” because it is not only my favorite Zeppelin song but favorite all time. As well, the very first song I learned to play on guitar back in 1982. Regarding the “covers”; Page was a highly regarded studio musician and rejected joining several bands. He finally joined the Yardbirds after Clapton left as the Bass player. They tour the US and Beck burned out and quit, Page took over as lead guitar. After the tour, members left the band leaving Page with a contractual obligation to tour Scandinavia. He recruited another brilliant studio musician, John Paul Jones to play Bass. The Singer he wanted was unavailable but he recommended Plant who in turn recommended Bonham. When they first got together in a small room, they played, “Train Kept a Rollin’”. Legend has it, it was a total jam. They toured as, “The New Yardbirds”. When Keith Moon and John Entwhistle of The Who heard it, one of them said, “Jimmy Page’s career is going over like a lead balloon. Jimmy heard that and named the band as is, Led Zeppelin. They recorded both their first two albums in 1969 without much material. As a matter of fact, the second album was recorded throughout the US while on tour. But because the blues was a favorite of young English men, they “covered” these songs and credited either “Traditional” or themselves. I bought the first two albums and they both say Traditional and Produced by Jimmy Page. This song is a cover of Joan Baez’ folk song.

Regarding Plant’s voice, he had peak power 69-72, but also Page sometimes sped up and slowed down the tracks for effect, which also had an impact on how we perceive Plant’s voice, which was really produced as another instrument. The band’s aural sweep, production and arrangement genius really set them apart. Every song is a journey. And I continue to say that Page is a genius for putting all this together. And as you said, they were 100% ready to take over the world on the first note!

I believe when they first recorded this they gave credit to Joan Baez. But she didn’t write it Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is a folk song written by Anne Bredon in the late 1950s. Joan Baez recorded a solo version for her 1962 album Joan Baez in Concert and a variety of musicians subsequently adapted it to a variety of styles, including Led Zeppelin. I think it took about 20 years for her to get the credit but she did and she got residuals too.

During that meeting, Jimmy played Joan Baez's (pronounced "bi-ez") version of this song and told Robert that he had a plan to flip the song into a harder, heavier direction and asked if Robert could sing the lines. Robert's voice would change because of exactly what you said; care wasn't taken, smoking, drinking, plus age (you can't help but sound a bit differently than you did at 19) etc., and he ended up having vocal chord surgery sometime around late 1973 or early 1974. To be fair, even singers who take care of their voice sometimes have problems. No, Kurt Cobain was NOT a Zep fan; he basically considered their lyrics misogynistic, although he said he really did enjoy some of the melodies they'd written. Some of the credos for this band you'll hear are "light and shade", "tight but loose", and "whisper to the thunder" which is all a way of basically saying "dynamics". Zeppelin couldn't "steal" from Yardbirds because Page was in The Yardbirds. So of course he brought his sound with him. Modernizing old blues songs from the 30s is not the same as pinching a "sample" from a classic rock song and calling it your own. My problem is appreciation. Plant and Page are huge blues fans. Rap stars and rap fans don't, in general, know classic rock. I hear reactors shocked all the time on KZbin when they discover that a piece of music in a rap song they love was just stolen from a great rock band. The word stolen is used because the rap star didn't play the instruments and cover the song. They just cut out the part from a song played by other musicians and take it. The old blues songs Zeppelin did, they played all the instruments, modernized the sound and added to the lyrics. They didn't grab a song by an old blues guy (or woman), put the recording on their album and claim it was theirs now. That would have been weird

Back in the Stone Age….late fifties…you used to have Beat poets (as in Beatniks) read their poetry…sometimes with guitar accompaniment. To me, hip-hop artists are basically doing street poetry to a beat. Many are incredibly talented wordsmiths who can create bars on the fly….They are word artists….but not musicians or vocalists. The samples provide their only claim to being music.

Plant was a rock god! Made my 16 year old heart race for sure. His voice was amazing, and he still does sing. At 72 his musical choices are different, but his voice is still recognizable. I'm loving going through these songs with you. Having the lyrics on screen and hearing you talk about them makes me think about them in a new way. After hearing songs for 50 years you kind of stop paying attention.

On texture: I think you’re right, there’s almost a thickness to that section where the guitar strums instead of picks. And the picking part is almost like a lace curtain blowing in an open window. Mist is definitely another texture in led zep, like a forest mist or that around a mountain peak.

It may be stated by others TL:DR but while this could be taken as he is leaving her for good I have heard Plant say in an interview this was more about the separation from his love that would occur when the band went back on the road to tour. The subtle hints are "leave you in the summertime"... i.e. when most bands toured back in the day and "don't you hear it calling..." a reference to the road calling him and the band. Basically this is a lament of young man who wants to call out and stay home and spend the day(s) in bed with his woman making sweet love to each other, BUT he knows he has to go to work.

To all of "those" comments, 3 things: 1. electronic keyboards, samplers, and other things producers use to create beats/backing tracks are instruments, they're just different types of instruments than guitar and drums, etc. They're inputting data, similar to inputting finger picking or drum hits, and get an output of sound just like other instruments. It doesn't require any physical talent, but requires just as much mental talent as well as ear talent, listening for what sounds best with each other. 2. The voice is objectively an instrument which rappers use rhythmically, which is musical. Just because there is rarely much melody used, doesn't mean there is no musicality to it. Also the flow and intonation of the voice is very different between different rappers, making each one unique. There's a reason Snoop Dogg sounds much different than say Nas. 3. Writing verses may not be inherently musical by itself, but it is considered poetry, so still artistic. Of course even as a big 90s hip hop fan, I would never say any of my favorite hip hop tracks is nearly as impressive musically as a band like Zeppelin, but to say it's not art or it's not music at all is outright moronic. I'm certain anyone who thinks that is not a musician themselves, or at least not one worth anyone's time

I think the reason there is a distinction between rock artists borrowing from the blues vs hiphop sampling music from rock is that rock artists dont simply record sample tracks and rhyme over them, rock artists change the compositions they borrow… oh and they are musicians who know how to play instruments, not just voice over recordings of others.

The members were age 19 to 24 I think, (off the top of my head) and not many in that age range are business/ legal savvy. They are criticized for not crediting the original composers/writers of some of their songs. Musicians are focused on making music. Record companies are concerned with profit and owning the rights to music. How that got past the company lawyers is open for debate,( either musical ignorance or just cutting legal corners). The thing is most fans knew they were old songs and some of us owned the original records of those artist. At any rate I do feel there is a difference between playing a song you like and just lifting/ sampling a recording . The love and appreciation may still be there for the original I suppose. That being said,musicians work with the material and inspiration at hand.

Axl Rose also has a really unique voice, a six-octave range, and a style all his own. But he's also different enough from Plant that it's really hard to say one is better than the other.
