one of the best things about Courtney covers is she doesn't mimic the original but rather does her own thing , in my opinion making the song even better! as long as you're checking Courtney out, I'll check you out!

Yeah, I also took it more like "no subsequent cover is ever going to beat this" than any disrespect at all for the original or the fact that it gets a lot of covers. Plus it kind of fit in with the shape of the arrangement, too, right? She exerts all her energy on the second-to-last chorus, sings the last chorus as if she's running out of energy, and drops the mic as her last defiant act.

She knows live microphones don't break, she just slayed that take, and rockstars don't have to follow any rules. She's a mini-rockstar. Muse smash guitars and drum sets at the end of shows ya'll. Let the kid drop a mic. 🤘

There's a little more to the story, more CONTEXT for better understanding what her actions say there with the mic drop. This cover was the fourth and FINAL for an EP that was, in large part, a response to bunch of valid 'reactors' concerned about the 'sameness' of her songs and singing style in all her performances on AGT (and, the year before, on The Voice Kids UK season 1) AND the ways that so many internet TROLLS disrespected her vocal skills and musicality. These four covers progressed from the very restrained first cover where she sang sitting on a stool, not allowed to get up and move around (which is her NATURAL reaction to the music that moves her). She trained herself to sing and perform by STUDYING vids of the old-time GREATS here on KZbin: James Brown, Tina Turner, Etta James, Janice Joplin, Otis Redding, Mick Jagger (who himself learned from those others back in the day when HE was starting out), and many more. To her, if I'm interpreting what I've seen and heard through recordings, reactions and comments here on KZbin, these four covers were the definitive answer to her most savage critics. This shy, private, 14 or 15 year old girl-next-door with a DREAM to ROCK like Tina Turner, chose to do what was required of her to PROVE to all those doubters, naysayers, and especially to the trolls who'd DISSED her skills, commitment, truthfulness, and more. She'd just completed 'Sucker', getting closer to slipping the leash and getting back to her real self. [Did you SEE that TWIRL in midst of 'Sucker' performance, where she just COULDN'T suppress her natural reaction to the music she was making? And watch for the guitarist and keyboard guy to share secret GRINS behind her back as her exceptional skill and expertise at going OLD SCHOOL came out!] kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3eYZJqhjpV9n68 Her mic drop here was about FAR MORE than just her unique cover of this song, it was about putting the EXCLAMATION POINT at the END of her ANSWER to all those doubting or dissing her! And, just yesterday, years later, she dropped her original absolute banger of a song, 'Monsters'. Her FOURTH original single released in 2023. This is NOT a cover of any of the prior songs with same title, this is HER ORIGINAL SONG written years ago, but held back for last stage before release of her debut album...WHICH NEVER HAPPENED WHILE SHE WAS UNDER CONTRACT. Now that she's free and indie, she's doing HER music HER way. And all I can say is: Let's GO!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXW5lGupqLWYnZY

Courtney said when she first heard this song, she could envision a completely different version in her head and she said she just had to sing it. Lucky for us she did, because this is an incredible rock take that sounds nothing like the original. She made it completely her own. This is a cover in name only because of the common lyrics, but it truth, it could be classified as a new original song. One thing that you will see with Courtney as you listen to her more is that she has creativity that is off the charts in addition to her great vocal and performing ability. Courtney will never do a cover just to do a cover. If she does a cover, it's because she has a completely different and unique take on a song. After all, why do a cover just to imitate the original. Obviously the original was massively popular, but most people I know prefer this version of the song, but either way, there is no denying Courtney's incredible talent. In answer to your question, Courtney was 14 when she recorded this performance and this is about one year after her AGT audition you had previously reacted to. I left four recommendations on your cover of Courtney's 'Sign of the Times' that will give you a sample, among other things, of Courtney's funkier side as well as a sample of Courtney just dominating when she has a full stage to work with. Really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. You added some great insight. Looking forward to much more Courtney.

No question from me that it was better than the original! Good reaction and good points, especially about knowing the lyrics. It's hard enough to correctly learn lyrics to a song, but then to sing it with feeling and abandon that's necessary to perform it right is much more difficult. It's a testament to Courtney's intelligence that she can learn these covers in a relatively short time and sing them without having to think about or read the lyrics. I have written songs myself, and even after playing the song a lot, I will still have my own lyrics in front of me when recording to be sure I get them right. I am impressed by Courtney's memory and hard work on being able to perform the way she does and to creatively master the song in her own different style. She is a superstar in the making!

An early article described how Courtney would practice a song 100 times while running up and down stairs. This was before AGT. - early on she was busking the streets for tips to pay for lessons and other things. At age 11 She picked up on James Brown videos where he used the whole stage. Her early theater experience also affected he r style.

@@dabouras I've heard that, totally believe it from the work ethic I've seen via her public releases of information and her mannerisms and performances and comments by others who've worked with her directly, but apparently my googlefoo is not up to the task of FiNDING it. Drop me a link or hint if you could. I'd like to see any documentation we can morally find without FURTHER invading this young superstar's privacy. That privacy is so important to so many top artists (and those like Courtney in the act of becoming the next generation of same). But if the info already escaped, it'd be nice to be able to point DOUBTERS to it. As for all the D@#% trolls who've been attacking her and others, I have to remember to just ignore them rather than react to their filth. DOUBTERS can be converted. Trolls can best be....

Well done, FWF! Courtney said she liked the song, and it came to her how she could completely change the genre and make it more of a rock song. That shows how creative she is and one of her amazing traits that will help make her a superstar. Another good point you made: What Courtz is doing is bigger than her amazing voice, bigger than the music she does, etc. We're watching a legend in the making. You're right: She sings with so much passion and emotion, like a 30-some year old who's lived through all of those experiences, yet she was ONLY 14 when she performed this cover! Btw, the mike drop was definitely not a sign of disrespect. That's not Courtney. She's a really good kid which sets her apart from many of today's singers. I'm sure the mike drop was more of an expression of excitement that she killed her performance. In the previous reaction you did of Courtney, "Sign of the Times", I recommended that you react to 3 songs of hers: 1.) PRETTY LITTLE THING - Her only original so far, 2.) SOMEONE YOU LOVED beautiful ballad and 3.) PIECE OF MY HEART - A cover of 1960's Janis Joplin's classic at an actual concert

I believe you nailed what Courtney is perfectly. She is not about a "beautiful" voice. She is raw and powerful, and I like your word animated. And let's not kid ourselves, she has an excellent voice. Couple that with her mesmerizing stage presence and the ability to put both together, that sets her apart from most artists including those who have been in the business for a while. Courtney's version blows away the original IMHO.

Just curious Fabian, after explaining how good she is with dynamics as you so well explained here, why you haven't been reacting to all her other great videos? BTW, the mic drop was explained by her as her way of letting people know she wasn't someone who could sing just how AGT viewers perceived her, which was only as only a rocker. She did 2 ballads and 2 other hit songs in her 4 "Cover Sessions" EP, like "Sucker" and this song "Old Town Road" which were not at all originally rockers. "Sucker" was a pop hit, and "Old Town Road" was I guess you could say a country rap song into a funky/rock song for and a rocker respectively. Her mic drop statement was a message to all those AGT viewers who didn't think she could do anything else but rock. The message really was "OK, now I"m done. Do you still think I only rock". I'm paraphrasing of course, but that was the message back then.

About the dropping MIC thing...i though that was a THING for a ROCKSTAR.....i saw some RockStar breaking their guitar but doesnt meana anything and COURTNEY is a Rock CHICK so i think that was necessary and should be included to the performance ... So much passion. She has the talent, no doubt. But, she sings her butt off. And that's what separates her from just doing a cover. You can really appreciate artists that do this. When you put that much emotion into a song, people can feel the energy besides the great vocals.

You don't cover a song unless you hear it and think "I could do something with this..." Memorizing the lyrics, chords, notes etc when doing a cover is not really the thing. After a while of playing that stuff fades into the background, and the effort all goes into channeling emotions. Sounds corny but it's true.

Something you said made me think to back when she released this cover. She mentions that when she heard it a few time when it 1st came out that she heard it in her head a completely different way than the original and this was the way she heard back then. What I find cool is that for a 14 year old to communicate with the musicians how she here's the vibe of the song in her head without being able to actually play any instrument well enough back then to let them know what she was hearing in her head. Obviously the session musicians are a big part of figuring that out for her. But she still had to translate what was in her head somehow vocally. That's what's impressive, especially at 14 years old.

I've been in music nearly all my life. the mic drop yes so deserving and no disrespect, but def a statement, I'm coming with heart and soul. That's what mic drops are. it's only disrespectful when you don't perform or sing at a level that would give you "Right" to mic drop... so that's my deal on that... she tore that song up! but, i know what you're saying about cover songs they're not a fan of, yes they have to, but many fail at which is why studios discourage cross over, or even stars from doing songs that don't fit their vocals, because they don't have the transition, like Celion doing AC/DC Back in Black... uuuuughhhhh,,, just ugly... so it is really discouraged. Courtney has a talent of crisp clean w/o raspy to raspy hitting two almost 3 octaves, low, mid, and low high octave... and then have that power of that R&B distortion that is natural, not forced, because she knows when to put it in and when not and that's a difficult thing to do... She's done so many genre songs since she was 8 incredible in her singing where she's not only singing she's capturing you in her emotion. it's one thing going up there and singing because you're talented, but to capture you like she does is a whole different ball game...
