Such a beautiful tribute. After the Ballet for Life performance, Brian recounted that John told him, “I can never do this again, I can’t do this.” Roger’s song Old Friends is very sweet. They grew up together in that they became a unit enduring many ups & downs. In interviews they all emphasized how important the band was. Roger once remarked, “It’s the anchor I don’t know what life would be without it”

Sensational! In case your wondering, the illustration is of Icarus from Greek mythology. I liked that lyrical reference-"their only flying too close to the sun." I agree, Brian May and Roger Taylor are such beautiful but criminally underrated singers. This song truly showed that Freddie was really like a brother to them, not just their frontman. The looks on their faces, in their voices and in every note their sorrow is clear and were doing all they can to keep it together and not break down crying, (not that I'd blame them if they did). The champagne glass on the piano was in homage to Freddie who would toast his audiences with champagne sometimes during special gigs. Last year, Brian and his wife went on pilgrimage to Zanzibar, where Freddie was born to retrace his childhood steps and see his old house, his old school and even the hospital where Freddie and his sister were born. In case your wondering, bass player John Deacon took Freddie's death the hardest. After making this video and recording the song, John participated in a Queen collaboration with Bejart- Ballet for life in honor of Freddie, who was a huge lover of Ballet and opera. While he's basically involved in the band's finances, he's now basically a recluse.

o i never knew all that about John. thanks for the insight
@ZENOBlAmusic4 жыл бұрын
Not completely true. I would personally say John was voted out of the band. They often voted on things. Jim Beach inherited Freddie's vote in the band. John started making public statements about how he did not agree with some of their choices and decisions, and he "retired" soon after that in 1997. But there is a story of John working alongside Mike Spencer for a remix of Under Pressure as late as 1999, they created a new remix for the Greatest Hit III album. According to Mike Spencer, John was very amicable and enthusiastic about the project. But the remix was rejected by Brian and Roger, and it was not chosen for the album. www.queenonline.com/features/queen-remixed-mike-spencer-fan-feature-by-adam-unger John actually went to see the We Will Rock You theater show, but he had no interest in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. So make of that what you will.

This song always gets me in the Grinchy parts. My husband died when he was 34 and while I know it is common to idealize dead people, it's hard to idealize Mike without most of it being accurate. Poor John, he looks devasted in this video. .. he went into a deep depression after Freddie's passing and almost 30 years later still hasn’t recovered. ''He felt blinded by the glow of Brian Roger and Freddie and only Freddie could understand him, that's why he had a depression after his death. He didn't see a future for him in the band without Freddie. He's just living a private life. His wife sometimes tells callers to their home that he 'doesn't live here', or that she 'doesn't know where he is'. Guitarist Brian adds: 'It's his choice. He doesn't contact us. John was quite delicate all along.' Indeed his lifestyle in South London is so reclusive and quiet - and his attitude to fame so hostile - that the band apparently don't expect him to respond when they contact him. '' (source: Dailymail-uk)

They were more than friends, more like family. Brian revealed that he considered suicide when Freddie died, and that he, Brian, had just lost his father as well! John was so devastated by Freddie’s death that he just left. For him Queen died with Freddie, and though John continues to manage the business side of things for them, he remains a recluse to this day. Roger was especially close to Freddie and was not able to handle it very well either. This song always makes me cry. Freddie left a big empty space that no one could fill, not for Queen or for us. I appreciated your reaction as always. 😥
