The guitars play in harmony the same notes at different octaves. Live even the solo is at the same time. Even better live when they picked up the third guitarist and all 3 play at the same time the same thing including the whole solo.

Don't forget Steve Harris doubling those lead melody lines on the bass and octive lower. That's where the "fatness" comes in, the layering of the guitar harmonies helps, but it's the bass that fills it out.

Definitely sounds like galloping horses and the rolls at end of lick bring to mind a horse and rider going down. Steve Harris is a sick man on that bass. The amount of time it would take to be that good on bass suggest obsessive compulsive mania.

Great reaction as usual. Thank you. With many Iron Maiden songs, you often get an accurate history lesson. The Trooper tells the account of a British soldier during the Crimean War. Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854. Lord Raglan had been ordered to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was, instead, sent on a suicide mission charging straight at heavy Russian artillery which cost the lives of hundreds of British soldiers. This tragedy inspired Alfred Lord Tennyson to write the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade. Other great Iron Maiden history lessons you could check out.... Run to the Hills, Alexander the Great, Paschendale and Empire of the Clouds. Up the Irons!!!🤘

You are absolutely right about the influence that Iron Maiden and other groups had on video game music in the 1990s on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis, Super NES and original Playstation. So many of the game devs in that era were big metal nerds. Some were into jazz fusion or prog rock too. So you had the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) stuff like Iron Maiden, Motorhead and Judas Priest, the classic metal of groups like Black Sabbath and their imitators (I don't mean to downplay them, some made good music, but Sabbath kind of stands alone as an influence in retrospect), the big four of thrash metal (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax), some early death metal like Death and Cannibal Corpse and 70s and 80s jazz fusion like Weather Report or the Japanese groups like T-Sqauare and Casiopia influencing the work those composers were doing. You are bang on to see Iron Maiden's influence in the Sega games that you used to play.

That "galloping" sound is the bass riff brilliance of Steve Harris. it is a staplepoint of Maiden's songs - Harris' signature sound. And no - muskets were not 'machine guns'. And yes - there are two guitars playing on top of each other. Later they added a third guitar - there are three guitarist providing layers and bouncing solos back and forth.

When it comes to airplay, heavy metal arguably started in California with Blue Cheer. Their cover of Summertime Blues in 1968. There is video. Zep was formed in 68 with the first album coming out in 69. Sabbath was formed in 68 with the first album released 1970.

@@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek granted, one can choose from different definitions but one can argue they apply more to genres of heavy metal. If we go with the most commonly used overall definitions, Blue Cheer is the first to go all out on a recording that reached the masses. Let's look at some of those definitions:There are numerous stylistic variations on heavy metal's core sound, but they're all tied together by a reliance on loud, distorted guitars (usually playing repeated riffs) and simple, pounding rhythms. Blue Cheer in 68. Now if you want to skip ahead to the lowered fifth step or the tritone interval, then you can credit Black Sabbath in 1970.

I grew up with a Commodore 64 and Amiga and eventually PC and consoles. Still listen to some of the game music now. I get that feeling. Iron Maiden are also know for their gallop style - not in all songs, but a gallop of some type turns up often. A number of their songs has the music to put you in the song/country/mindset of the story being told. Rime of the ancient mariner, Alexander the great, Nomad and Parchment are some other examples of that.

None of the UK bands you mentioned in the intro are "thrash-metal", which is what Metallica were part of defining alongside Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax (to name a few) They took their inspiration from metal + punk. Iron Maiden was part of what was termed "NWOBHM" New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, with such bands as Judas Priest and Saxon. The UK thrash bands never gained as much popularity, but gained cult like status. Venom and Napalm death kinda set the tone early, with many thrash bands both side of the pond crediting Venom as one of their inspirations.

So Maiden had through most of their big albums dual lead guitarists in Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. They often harmonize with each other quite superbly. Sabbayh has only 1 guitarist, what you heard in the Studio Sabbath track were overdubs and multi track recording. Later in the 90s Maiden added Janick Gers and now have 3 lead guitarists. Most of their big hits are Dave and Adrian, and usually each do a solo in the song. KK Downing and Glenn Tipton of priest also harmonize w great effect but I think Dave and Adrian do it even better. Galloping is often referred to when it comes to Maidens rhythm section. If you didn't know that off hand you sure picked up on it

If you’re talking metal, U.K. kind of gave up the ghost with metal sometime during the 80’s, which is when the US really picked it up and ran with it. If you are talking rock in general, during the “golden age of rock” the U.K. dominated over the US in terms of global influence, but again this fizzled out towards the end of the 80’s, when again the big bands all seemed to come from the US thereafter barring one or two examples

I would not say it is as clear as you stated about the UK reigning supreme on rock music. No doubt the UK has some great ones and you left out some like Def Leppard that should have been on the short list, but it's a closer call when you consider Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, KISS, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Steppenwolf, Nirvana, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Blue Öyster Cult, Dokken, Linkin Park, Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet, and Poison just to name some from the US. Given UK is 4 countries in your list, then Canada should be included on the North American list so you would have to add Rush, Triumph, and Nickelback. I'm not going to contend North America leads the UK. I will only contend it isn't as obvious as you indicated. I would bet American rock bands have sold more combined total albums if you want to use that as a measure.
