Michael actually gave his approval to use sets, same choreographer , same dancers, every thing. That's how much Michael loved what Al did. Comedy Recording Winners include Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, Robin Williams, and Tiffani Haddish to name a few. It can be music or stand up. Al has won several times

Al writes all his lyrics. He also writes original comedy songs. He has 14 studio albums, which are about half parody and original songs. 6 of them have gone platinum. The grammys have had comedy recording categories for many years. In the 50s and 60s novelty record were pretty popular. Al has 5 Grammys in various categories (the Grammys are always changing). The comedy category has been for any type of comedy, spoken or music. Some years it was changed to spoken only (94-03). Eat It won over a Richard Pryor recording. However, his parody of Bad, called Fat, won for best music video. Al has a total of 17 Grammy nominations.

He won best video for Fat. Eat It was for comedy recording. He has 2 more for comedy album and his 5th is for box set.

Al Yankovic deserves all the success he gets. The man has been doing this for over 40 years at this point with no signs of slowing down. It's actually seen as a you've made it kind of thing if Al parodies you. It's rare in life you find anyone who turned it down or took offense. Prince and Paul McCartney turned him down. Coolio tried to, but Al did it anyway and in the end Coolio was all right with it. Some of my favorites by him are Lasagna, Yoda, Another One Rides the Bus, the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota, Perform This Way, Word Crimes, Amish Paradise, White and Nerdy, The Saga Begins...

I believe the Grammy's give awards in different categories. Many awards are given out other times that do not make the TV version. I assume they do not want to bore the home TV audience or making the TV show longer than the 3 hours it already is. The more the audience, the more they can charge the sponsors/commercial ads. I do not know if this practice is the same since I have not watched the Grammy's for decades. The Comedy category has other nominees. I believe it can be anything recorded, so recorded routine from a stand-up comedians might get the award. There is a Grammy of recorded books, that is how the Clinton's and Al Gore won their Grammy, the audio of their own books. I believe I read, all of Weird Al's parody songs have been given permission by the original singer or who owns the song. They also get a percentage of the royalties of the song when it is played. Interesting back story of Fat and Eat It and how Michael Jackson helped with making Weird Al's parody video look like the original.
