Eddie had the best smile, he sparkled. This song isn't a favorite of most Van Halen fans. You gotta promise me you'll listen to Drop Dead Legs off of this album. The rhythm is mind blowing, Ed makes that guitar sound downright sleazy and I freaking love it!

A lot of people don't know but the Van Halen family came to America from Holland with their 2 sons, Alex and Eddie, both less than 5 years old, who were child prodigies on piano. Eddie revealed years later in an interview that he couldn't read music and that he just watched his piano teacher play the song and then just copied where the teacher put his hands on the keys. You have no idea how impossible that is!!

This group was always over the top with silliness! Many 1st time reactors think VH is cheesy, but ridiculousness was a common 80’s vibe. We lived in the moment and never took life too seriously. We lived for the moment. Live and let live, baby!

The thing about Van Halen is, they're a lot like Metallica in that they have eras of sounds. If you listen to them in the late 70s and early 80s, it sounds different than mid 80s. And then David Lee Roth left the band and they got a new singer, Sammie Haggar, who gave them a completely different sound. This was one of their biggest breakout hits that got them a ton of play time on MTV in 1984. Check out "Panama" and some of their earlier stuff, but definitely check out some Van Haggar too!

My favorite is Ain't Talking Bout Love, but other great ones include Panama, Beautiful Girls, Running With the Devil, Jaynie's Cryin', Dance the Night Away, Dreams, Why Can't This Be Love, and Best of Both Worlds, among others.

I'm with you MB.if you have a literal god on the guitar like Eddie, it's sort of a crime not to have a solo that shakes your very soul. This is the stuff that we listened to before we found Metallica. It was on the radio, it was on MTV, and it was passable, but for an 80's teenager, it more or less showcases the mainstream safe stuff we listened to, but were looking for more.

Great reaction as always dude! This song was more pop-rock sounding because the times were changing. The glam rock scene was heating up and many bands from that scene were exploding or about to explode and reach the heights of rock stardom. Van Halen were already there and the album this is on was sort of like their glam rock/"hair metal" album. It's full of fun songs and well worth exploring.

Since Eddie instantly established himself as a “rock guitar god,” it surprised many listeners when he began playing keyboards on songs like “Jump.” Later on, we learned that the piano had in fact been his first instrument, and he had won four consecutive classical piano contests in his youth.

The “radio” releases had to meet the play length requirements. Live versions are where you get longer instrumental solos, etc but with some artists and bands the presentation sound quality of live shows doesn’t equate to the pristine studio rendition.
@arcanewyrm6295
@arcanewyrm6295 3 сағат бұрын
Yeah, radio versions sucked. If you were lucky, the album versions had the intended length and solos, etc., but the live performances were usually where you'd find the most energetic versions of songs - though, like you alluded to, sometimes the audio quality suffered when live-recorded.

Eddie was a classically trained pianist and can play many instruments. You might want to check out an interview Eddie did with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, where he donated his hand made guitar called Frankenstrat. He was born in the Netherlands. The family story, his introduction to music by his father, migration to the US and his start in rock. You’ll understand his contribution to rock better. Eddie is very articulate and charming in sharing his journey. You can find the interview on KZbin. Van Halen was never metal. Hard rock band started in the 70s but came to the 80s as a mega hit. The original vocalist, David Lee Roth, was an entertaining front man. I had his poster behind my office door at work. Great concerts. Amazing live performance. I’d start with early hits and work forward. They changed vocalists a few times. But it was Eddie’s band. His way or the highway…. Most geniuses can sometimes be a jackass but his talent just faded that to the background. Losing him in 2020 was incredibly painful for my generation.

Jump was the start of Eddie's experimentation with synths. It's still VH but definitely more chill than their earlier stuff. Eddie was a virtuoso musician so it wasn't a shock that he'd mess with other instruments, his music brain was too big to be confined to just the guitar. RIP to the master, his genius is sorely missed.

I love all VH stuff but Jump wasn't always a favorite, being a little too poppy. But after Eddie died and I heard it the next day, that line "See me standing here, I got my back against the record machine." just really hit hard. It just brought me back to the 80s and how it was back then and how these songs helped define that era and growing up. It will always be special song for us from that time. RIP King Edward.

There is almost nothing that can make me smile like Eddie's grin. He always looked like he knew something we didn't. He also looked like he might start a little trouble. David Lee Roth is considered by a lot of people to be one of the best front men of all time. The style looks so silly to me now but that was the thing back then. My hubby doesn't like this as much, he said it's more like pop music. Try Jamie's Crying, the Atomic Punk or Running With the Devil for some of their more normal to them music. On an aside what about those splits in the beginning or those incredible high kicks? David was in excellent shape, he was like the Eveready Bunny! Full speed energy that lasted the whole show. God bless.

This song was a rock/pop radio staple in 1984. Eddie wanted to do the Synth thing, as it was pretty popular in music at the time, so there were a few songs on the Van Halen "1984"album, that had synth in it. Heck, the song "1984", which starts off the album, is an instrumental synth song. The band Rush got heavily into Synth, during this time period, also... If you want the meat and potatoes of the "1984" album, check out "Drop Dead Legs"!! Best riff and song on the album, IMHO, and one of Eddie's best riffs, period! Also, "Panama", "Top Jimmy", "I'll Wait", "Girl Gone Bad", etc... Are ALL better, and heavier, than Jump! If you want to check out something badass from the Sammy Hagar era of Van Halen, the riff for "Summer Nights" is pretty killer! Anyway... Just because this song was poppy, don't give up on Van Halen! They have a lot of great songs!!

You reaction was a lot of people's reaction when they heard the song. Roth left because of the direction Eddy was taking the band. It helps it not seem so, so pop when you learn that Roth came up with the lyrics because some guy had been out on the ledge of a building.

I have a pretty extensive collection of Iron Maiden bootlegs, and one has a very long conversation between several of the band mates post Powerslave about keyboards in metal. Jump is reference to what someone yelled when a jumper was being talked down from a ledge. The VH brothers dad was in a big brass band when they were younger (trumpets, etc) hence where they got their sound. You gotta hear Drop Dead Legs from same album. It's riffs and vocals are awesome. This is the era when most rock bands were experimenting w synthesizers (1984- name of this album) another good one is I'll Wait. It rocks. If you want harder van halen, you'll have to go back or further in the future when Sammy Hagar was front man. VH was considered a fun rock band. Check out Ice Cream Man or Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now for examples. Diver Down album was super good.
