They're as Patrick said, Iconic. So that was never cringe, we cringe at ourselves, what is cringe, is the two friends in highschool that made out constantly on other people's lockers but swore they were just friends. Silly bands aren't cringe, the kids in ROTC who constantly tried to make other people feel like they knew what they wanted and life and had shit figured out were cringe, cuz they were just as lost as the rest of us.

As someone who studied economics, the choice overload point is spot on. Hip-hop isn’t dead, the medium we consume hip-hop on is just oversaturated. Not to mention the pure toxicity that surrounds online music communities nowadays.. I definitely enjoy music more when I’m not reading through a bunch of negative comments or reviews on social media. Still one thing is for sure, Father Time is undefeated. As Frank Ocean said, we’ll never be those kids again. That may sound sad, but it’s something everyone has to accept at some point or another. The main reason I had more fun with music in the 2010’s is because I was in my adolescence (teenage years) and there were so many first experiences that made that time period so exciting. Not to mention during that time frame is when most people develop their taste for music, so of course music is going to hit different. Still, despite the fact that I’m aging, I still feel like the music industry and culture as a whole are so exhausting anymore. I think keeping a healthy distance from it and returning every so often to see what’s new is a solid approach.

@@jghifiversveiws8729 The problem is that community isn't as accessible as the mediums we've become used to (ie. recommended or trending videos/movies/games). KZbin, in comparison, recommends me whatever I've been enjoying in the past months, consistently following whatever I enjoy and replicating it. But which one really caters towards loneliness? Clearly, there's just an influx in content, which makes us even more unique/isolated tastewise than other people, which makes sticking to one mainstream or niche group easier to find people like you. Hip hop needs to evolve. The only reason it was ever cool was because it was a new genre. So after 50 years, who is going to step up and invent/ discover the next new genre? Because currently it’s just the same recipe regurgitated for the last 20 years.

A great video essay and interesting take. Appreciate the unpopular opinion stance you took. Too many options is definitely to blame. Especially because when we do take a chance on discovering new artists and it fails, we're left disappointed. We need to find an industry to compare this to - or an analogy - so that we can find an existing solution for this problem. Where do we go when we have too many options? The opposite structure is one where we have only a few labels, or TV networks, or companies responsible for deciding all of what we consume (and as a result, there's less opportunity and more barrier to entry, which has its own cons).
@PatCc11 ай бұрын
it's super interesting right? Like where do we go.. can we even recover from this?? I'm on a mission lol
@t2themoon11 ай бұрын
@@PatCc bro i think movies/tv have had a similar problem. Perhaps the answer is consuming via a credible source - like HBO for example: as big as they've got, they haven't lost integrity or seemingly been corrupted. It's reliable and quality content that the consumer can trust. Netflix got too saturated (they had to create a ton of original content to compete with already existing networks like HBO, Disney, etc.) and is losing credibility to the consumer. This discussion also reminds me of the food/retail industries too. How do we know to consume? Food/retail decisions are sadly often determined by money and convenience. There are brackets. It's almost hierarchical. (It also can be political: Michelin stars, high-end fashion) Music is tough though because it's practically free and accessible to everyone. The power comes from a solid co-sign and community (as you said). I think the solution will have to be a return to traditional values, like authenticity, word of mouth referrals, experience (travis scott concerts), and unique branding. But easier said than done 😩

I was a music blogger from 1998 through to about 2012. My main blog is still online but I don't really post to it. I often say "Web 2.0 killed the internet" because the consolidation of internet traffic through a handful of platforms controlled by the same couple of big corporations did a massive disservice to the internet. The rise of "microcontent" like Twitter all the way to TikTok as a replacement for online communities like message boards did a massive disservice to the internet. The all powerful "algorithm", again, did a massive disservice to the internet. And finally the idea that "content creator" on one of these platforms was not only a "respectable" job but a way to make money did a massive disservice to the internet. When I was a music blogger I did it because I was passionate about music. Not because it was something I could "monetize." I invested money and time in having a web presence that was MINE. I paid for the web space. I did the coding. I wrote the content. I shared whatever the fuck I wanted and it was EXTREMELY rare that a label or anybody else told me I couldn't. I didn't have to worry about my posts being demonitized because I owned the platform and I was posting to INFORM not to make money. Now you have "content creators" who basically work for the algorithm. They don't do it because they're passionate. They do it to make money. And the platform isn't going to give them money unless their content is built for the algorithm.

We've already seen an explosion in several new genres in the past 20 years and a slew of sub-genres of rap in the past 10...all due to emerging technologies allowing people to express and create in ways unprecedented than ever before. If it wasn't for the advent of music streaming sites like SoundCloud, or software/hardware being so accessible to the point where I could have a makeshift studio in a fucking storm drain, (which wouldn't be a terrible idea for acoustics🤔...) we wouldn't be talking about how *saturated* these sub-genres are! @@KatSpicert what don't you guys understand. Creativity is dead. The urgency to create a new genre is propelled through an active community that's actually interacting with music. Most people are too musically illiterate and ignorant nowadays. Look at how people are sampling records. They're basically just covering hit songs by rapping over them instead of cutting up and splicing different records from different artists. There hasn't been a new genre of music that's hit the mainstream in 20 years. We're not talking about sub-genres. Regardless of if u think its the case, too many people sound like another, nobody has a unique sound anymore so you really cant differentiate any artists. That is so much space that can be used for businesses, schools, parks, & etc. Places that bring people together instead of separating us into confined cars that take up so much space for just one person.

Crazy thing about this video is you legit just gave the cheat code to winning in today’s music industry. 1) make creative and different music or music you genuinely enjoy making(all of Opium has a different esthetic than anything mainstream right now and you can clearly spot the copy cats/biters) 2) build a community with consistency (you nailed it with the Kai example even though he’s a streamer and doesn’t make music he’s very consistent) I think Vloging is a big way to make people feel a deeper connection almost like they actually know you. A lot of artists I’m interested in don’t blog but the ones that do I will sit and watch a 10-15min vlog of them just making music and hanging with their friends. 3) Get some money and spend it on sponsorships, Ads, and content creators. If done properly it will make your music spread more organically even though you’re paying for it if that makes sense at all. 4) Have a back catalog cause when you put out a song and grab someone’s attention they’ll most likely want to hear more and if it’s more good music then they’ll stream it and you’ll keep popping up in their algorithm. Work with the Robots that run this matrix not against it.

Very good point about discovering music on Spotify. Because I was listening to a few certain songs in hiphop from old hip-hop, I was never initially recommended Kendrick Lamar or Denzel Curry of JID, 3 of my favourite music artists now that I've discovered them. If it wasn't for my friend recommending me them, I woudn't have found them, nor would I have found Dave or most of the UK scene despite being from the UK. Spotify seems to want to get your taste down to a very small subgenre and you could easily miss out on someone destined to be your favourite artist because of that. I'd argue Smino has this problem, he's done very well for himself considering I never saw this name come up again till my friend mentioned him, yet I'd gone through so much hip-hop and RnB but less than 4 million monthly listeners for what he puts out is crazy compared to Drake. I don't mind Drake, he's either accidentally or on purpose sort of found a loophole on Spotify where people rarely talk about him wherever I go till he has an album and everyone's going crazy then an hour after the album drops, I never hear his name again.okm

Smino, Denzel, or JID are so good man. Drake and a lot of mainstream artists put out just enough to make their fanbase happy and get the views popping.
